To copy one image from a PDF into Word, open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, choose the Select tool, click or marquee-select the image, choose Copy, then paste in Word with Ctrl+V (Windows) or Command+V (macOS). If the image cannot be selected, use Acrobat’s Snapshot tool to capture a rectangular page area. Snapshot is also the right choice when you need surrounding text, borders, or a crop rather than the original embedded image.
The workflow depends on what you need: an independently selectable image, a visual crop of the page, or an image file that is already saved on your computer. Converting the entire PDF by opening it in Word is a separate operation and can change the layout, so it is rarely the best solution for one picture.

Choose the method that matches your goal
Use the first route that matches the result you want. The distinction matters because a PDF can contain an original image object, a complete page made from a scan, or a mixture of text and graphics.
| What you need | Best route | What Word receives | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| One embedded photo, logo, chart, or illustration | Acrobat Select tool | The selected image object | Works only when the image can be selected independently |
| A crop, a diagram with labels, or any rectangular part of a page | Acrobat or Reader Snapshot | A raster image of the selected page area | Text and graphics in the capture are not separately editable |
| An image that has already been saved as JPG, PNG, or GIF | Word Insert > Pictures > This device | The image file | The cited Microsoft steps apply to Windows desktop Word |
| The complete PDF converted into an editable document | Open the PDF in Word | A converted Word copy | Layout can change; graphics-heavy pages may become uneditable page images |
Menu names can vary in non-Adobe PDF viewers and between desktop, web, Windows, and macOS editions. The detailed steps below use Adobe’s current Acrobat and Reader terminology where it is documented.

Method 1: Copy an independently selectable image in Acrobat
This is the cleanest method when the PDF stores the picture as its own object. It preserves the image without capturing unrelated page content.
Step 1: Open the PDF and activate Select
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
- Choose the Select tool from the toolbar.
- Move the pointer over the picture. When Acrobat indicates that an image can be selected, click it. If the image is difficult to target, drag a rectangle around it to marquee-select it.
To copy only part of an image, drag a rectangle when the crosshair appears. This creates a selection of the chosen area rather than the whole picture.
Step 2: Copy the selection
- Right-click the selected image and choose Copy. You can also use the platform’s copy command if it is available after selection.
- Switch to Word and click at the location where the picture should appear.
- Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS.
After pasting, Word treats the result as a picture. You can resize it with the corner handles and use Word’s picture-formatting tools, but the original PDF text around it is not included unless it was part of the selection.

PDF pages often layer text over an image. If dragging or clicking keeps highlighting words, first try a tighter rectangle around the picture. Acrobat also has a preference that changes selection priority: open Preferences > General and enable Make Select tool select images before text. Return to the page and try the selection again.

- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
If the picture is actually part of a single scanned page, there may be no independent image object to select. In that case, use Snapshot rather than repeatedly trying to isolate an object that the PDF does not contain.
Method 2: Use Snapshot for a crop or complete page region
Snapshot copies the visible appearance of a selected rectangle as an image. It is the practical fallback when the page includes text, a chart, a border, or several overlapping elements that must stay together.
Acrobat Snapshot steps
- Open the PDF and choose the Snapshot tool. In Acrobat, the command is available from the tools or edit controls; the exact location can differ by version.
- Drag a rectangle around the area you want. Include only the picture for a crop, or include the surrounding labels and page background when those are part of the desired result.
- Release the mouse. Acrobat copies the selected area to the clipboard as an image.
- Open Word, click in the document, and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS.
Snapshot captures appearance, not document structure. A caption inside the rectangle is therefore part of the pasted bitmap, and you cannot edit that caption as Word text.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Adobe’s Reader instructions describe Snapshot through Edit > More > Take A Snapshot. Select the rectangle, switch to Word, and paste. Reader and Acrobat can expose the command in different places, so use the application’s command search or edit menu if that path is not shown in your edition.

How Snapshot differs from image selection
| Criterion | Select and Copy | Snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Selection precision | Selects an embedded image object, or a selected part of it when Acrobat permits a marquee | Selects any rectangular portion of the rendered page |
| Surrounding content | Excluded unless it belongs to the image object | Included if it falls inside the rectangle |
| Output | The copied image object | A visual page capture |
| Best use | A clean photo, logo, or illustration | A crop, scanned page content, chart with labels, or layered artwork |
| Editability in Word | The result is still a picture, not editable PDF text | Everything in the rectangle is one image |
Method 3: Insert an image file that is already saved
If you have already extracted the picture, received it separately, or saved it from another authorized source, do not copy it through the PDF again. Microsoft’s documented Windows desktop Word route is:
- Place the cursor where the image should go.
- Choose Insert > Pictures > This device.
- Browse to the saved file.
- Select the JPG, PNG, or GIF and choose Insert.
This route avoids PDF selection problems and lets you choose the file’s original format. The cited Microsoft instructions are for desktop Word on Windows; labels and capabilities can differ in Word for the web or other platforms.
Choose a paste format when Word offers Paste Special
Regular paste is sufficient for most documents. If Word displays multiple picture formats, Paste Special lets you choose how the clipboard content is represented. Microsoft documents picture choices including JPEG, PNG, GIF, and Windows metafile formats, but the list depends on the Word application and operating system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Format shown by Word | Usually suitable for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Photographs and complex, continuously shaded graphics | Compression can soften fine lines or introduce artifacts |
| PNG | Line art, logos, screenshots, and illustrations containing text | Files can be larger than compressed JPEG images |
| GIF | Simple-color graphics when that format is offered | Limited color range compared with PNG or JPEG |
| Windows metafile formats | Some diagrams or legacy Windows graphics workflows | Availability and rendering vary by Word edition and platform |
To try this option, copy the image, open Word’s paste menu, and choose Paste Special. Select a picture format only if it appears in your installation. Do not assume every format is available on macOS, Word for the web, or a non-desktop edition.

What to do when copying is disabled
A PDF author can apply security settings that disallow copying. Adobe Acrobat Reader Help states: “You can copy content from a PDF unless the author has applied security settings that disallow copying.” The guidance was last updated June 22, 2026.
Check the document’s permissions
- In Reader, right-click the PDF.
- Open Document Properties.
- Choose the Security tab.
- Review Document Restrictions Summary and look for the copying permission.
If copying is not allowed, the supported remedy is to obtain an unrestricted or otherwise authorized copy from the document owner. The documented workflow does not provide a basis for bypassing a restriction. Acrobat may also show disabled copy commands when the author has imposed those limits.
If the page is a scan
A scanned PDF may contain one page-sized image rather than a separately stored photograph. Select may therefore treat the whole page as one object, select text only after OCR has been run, or fail to isolate the area you want. Use Snapshot for a visual crop. If you need editable words from the scan, that is an OCR task, not an image-pasting task.

Word can open a PDF and create a converted copy, but this performs document conversion rather than image copying. Microsoft says conversion works best for PDFs that are mostly text. A PDF containing mostly charts or other graphics may show the whole page as an image, with text that cannot be edited. Conversion can also alter spacing, line breaks, fonts, and object placement.
Best Value
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Use conversion when you genuinely need to revise much of the document and can inspect the result page by page. For one picture, selecting the image, using Snapshot, or inserting a saved file is more predictable and avoids changing unrelated PDF content.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Clicking highlights words, not the image
- Switch to Acrobat’s Select tool rather than a text-selection or hand tool.
- Drag a rectangle tightly around the image.
- Enable Make Select tool select images before text under Preferences > General.
- If the page is a scan or the image is layered with text, use Snapshot.
The Copy command is greyed out or nothing reaches Word
- Check Document Properties > Security and the Document Restrictions Summary.
- Confirm that the PDF author has not disabled copying.
- Request an authorized copy if permission is restricted.
- After copying, click inside the Word document before pasting; otherwise the clipboard content may be sent to another application or location.
The pasted result includes unwanted text or page background
- Undo the paste.
- Repeat Snapshot with a smaller rectangle, keeping the edges inside the image.
- If the image is independently selectable, return to Select and copy the image object instead of the page region.
The result looks blurry
Snapshot reproduces the rendered page area at the viewing scale used for the capture. Increase the PDF zoom before dragging the rectangle, then paste again. A saved original image inserted through Insert > Pictures > This device may be preferable when one is available. Do not enlarge a low-resolution capture more than necessary in Word, because scaling cannot restore detail that was not captured.
The image is present but cannot be edited as text
That is expected when you used Select and Copy or Snapshot: both produce a picture in Word. If the source is a scan and you need its words, run OCR in an appropriate PDF tool. Adobe’s Acrobat instructions describe Scan & OCR for recognizing text that is part of an image, while Microsoft notes that OCR accuracy depends on scan quality and clarity. Proofread the recognized text before relying on it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Acrobat or Reader does not show the same menu
Adobe’s interfaces change by version and platform. Look for Select, Snapshot, Copy, and the Edit menu using the application’s built-in command search. The Reader documentation’s Edit > More > Take A Snapshot path is a documented example, not a promise that every installation presents the command in exactly that location.
Preserve the result in Word
After pasting, click the image to open Word’s picture controls. Use corner handles to resize without distorting the proportions, and place the cursor before or after the image when you need surrounding text. If the image must stay with a caption, select both in Word and group them only after checking that the caption remains editable; a caption captured by Snapshot is already part of the picture.
For a document that will be printed or shared, inspect the pasted image at normal page size. A crop that looks clear at high zoom may be too small when printed, while an unnecessarily large screenshot can inflate the Word file. Keep the original PDF or source image so you can recapture the area if the first selection was wrong.
A quick decision checklist
- Need one clean embedded picture? Select it in Acrobat, choose Copy, and paste into Word.
- Need a crop or a chart with labels? Use Snapshot and paste the captured rectangle.
- Already have JPG, PNG, or GIF? Use Word’s Insert > Pictures > This device route on Windows desktop.
- Copy is blocked? Check Reader’s security restrictions and request an authorized copy; do not treat the restriction as a selection problem.
- Need editable scan text? Use OCR, then verify the recognition; copying the page as an image will not create editable words.
- Need the entire PDF editable? Open it in Word only after accepting that conversion can change layout and turn graphics-heavy pages into uneditable images.
Sources and version notes
The image-selection and Snapshot workflow is documented in Adobe Acrobat Help’s “Reusing PDF content” guidance, listed as updated February 26, 2026, and Adobe Acrobat Reader Help’s “Copy content from PDFs,” updated June 22, 2026. Microsoft’s “Paste Special” guidance covers available picture formats, “Opening PDFs in Word” explains conversion behavior, and “Insert scanned text or images into Word” documents the Windows desktop insertion path and OCR caveats. Exact menu labels can change with application version and platform.
