Short answer: A Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 computer that clears Microsoft’s additional hardware floor for on-device AI experiences. A regular Windows laptop can still be an excellent Windows 11 computer, but it may lack the processor, neural-processing performance, memory, or storage configuration required for those designated features.
The Copilot+ label is therefore a capability qualification, not a universal performance score. It does not by itself prove that a laptop is faster for your applications, lasts longer on battery, costs less, or offers better value. Compare the exact configuration and the features you will actually use.

Copilot+ PC and regular Windows laptop at a glance
| Question | Copilot+ PC | Regular Windows 11 laptop |
|---|---|---|
| What defines it? | Meets Microsoft’s additional processor/NPU, memory, storage, and Windows requirements. | Meets Windows 11 requirements but does not necessarily meet the Copilot+ hardware floor. |
| AI hardware | At least a 40 TOPS NPU, plus 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB SSD or UFS storage. | May have an NPU, but its NPU performance, RAM, storage, or another requirement may fall short. |
| Windows experiences | Eligible for designated Copilot+ experiences, subject to version, region, language, device, and feature requirements. | Can use ordinary Windows features and compatible applications, but features requiring Copilot+ qualification may not be available. |
| Recall | Can use Recall when the qualifying hardware, security settings, storage, and opt-in requirements are satisfied. | Cannot use Recall unless the computer meets the specific Copilot+ and security requirements. |
| Everyday speed, battery, and value | Must be judged from testing of the exact model and configuration. | Must also be judged from testing of the exact model and configuration. |
Microsoft’s specifications establish eligibility thresholds; they do not rank every Copilot+ laptop against every non-Copilot+ laptop. A well-chosen regular Windows laptop can outperform a poorly configured Copilot+ model in a particular workload.

Copilot+ status is based on a combination of hardware and Windows requirements. The current minimum hardware floor includes:
#1 Best Overall
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE FOR EVERYDAY WORK: The Intel N150 processor works with 8GB LPDDR5 memory and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage to support web browsing, email, document editing, online classes, video streaming, and routine multitasking. Integrated Intel Graphics provides dependable visuals for business, education, and everyday home use.
- CLEAR 15.6-INCH FULL HD DISPLAY: The 1920x1080 anti-glare display offers a spacious view for documents, presentations, research, online learning, and entertainment. Its 250-nit brightness, 88% active-area ratio, and TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light software solution support comfortable viewing during extended work or study sessions.
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND DURABLE DESIGN: Starting at only 3.42 lbs and measuring 0.70 inches thin, this Arctic Grey Lenovo laptop travels easily between home, school, and the office. MIL-STD-810H testing adds everyday durability, while the full-size keyboard includes a dedicated Copilot key for convenient access to AI assistance.
- MODERN CONNECTIVITY AND PRIVACY: Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 provide reliable connections for networks and accessories. Two USB-A ports, USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort, HDMI 1.4, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm audio jack support displays and peripherals, while the 720p camera includes a physical privacy shutter.
- READY FOR BUSINESS AND EDUCATION: Windows 11 Home and Microsoft 365 Personal provide familiar tools for documents, communication, coursework, and daily productivity. A 47Wh battery supports mobile workflows, while the included 65W power adapter enables efficient charging. Dolby Audio stereo speakers and dual-array microphones enhance online meetings and classes.
- A compatible processor or system-on-chip with a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
- 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory.
- 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage.
These requirements sit alongside Windows 11’s baseline requirements. Meeting only one part, such as owning a laptop with an NPU, is not enough.
Processor families listed by Microsoft
Microsoft’s current Copilot+ guidance lists AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series, Intel Core Ultra 200V and 300V series, and Snapdragon X series among the compatible families. Processor branding is only a starting point, however. A single family can be sold in multiple laptop configurations, and the amount of installed memory or storage can change qualification.
Why an NPU alone does not qualify
Microsoft explicitly notes that some Windows 11 PCs include silicon with a 40+ TOPS NPU but still fail the Copilot+ requirements. A lower-memory or lower-storage configuration is enough to disqualify the system. Such a computer may run local AI software that supports its hardware, yet it is not a Copilot+ PC and does not automatically receive experiences reserved for that category.
What you gain with Copilot+ hardware
The practical benefit is access to specific Windows experiences that use the NPU and the rest of the qualifying platform. The feature list is version-sensitive, and availability can vary by region, language, device, and software release.
Click to Do
Click to Do is designed to recognize content on screen and offer context-sensitive actions. The available actions depend on the device, region, language, and character set. Some actions can require a subscription. Check the current Windows feature documentation for the actions supported on the specific laptop before treating Click to Do as a deciding feature.
Agent in Settings
Agent in Settings is a Copilot+ experience intended to help users find or change settings through a more natural interaction. Its behavior and supported actions can change as Windows updates arrive. A Copilot+ label makes the device eligible for the experience; it does not guarantee that every advertised action is available in every market or language.
Automatic Super Resolution
Automatic Super Resolution uses the system’s AI hardware to improve performance or image quality in supported games. Microsoft’s current feature information limits it to a curated set of games and identifies Snapdragon X Series Copilot+ PCs as supported hardware. It is not a universal upscaler for every game, graphics API, or laptop.

Local processing and cloud-assisted tasks
Copilot+ marketing often emphasizes on-device processing, but the category is not an offline guarantee. Some experiences run locally, while certain image-generation or editing operations may use cloud services and require an internet connection. Verify the requirements of each feature rather than assuming that every AI operation is performed on the NPU or that every AI feature is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs.
Recall: requirements, storage, and control
Recall is one of the most discussed Copilot+ experiences, but it has stricter prerequisites than the general Copilot+ label. Microsoft Support says Recall requires a qualifying Copilot+ PC that meets the Secured-core standard, includes a 40 TOPS NPU, has at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, and satisfies additional security and storage conditions.
Requirements to enable Recall
- At least 50 GB of free storage when enabling the feature.
- Automatic snapshots pause when available free space falls below 25 GB.
- Device Encryption or BitLocker must be enabled.
- Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security must be configured with at least one biometric option.
- The user must opt in to saving snapshots.
The 50 GB and 25 GB figures are Microsoft’s product requirements, not estimates of how much space every user will permanently lose. Actual storage use depends on how the feature is configured and how much snapshot history is retained.
Where Recall data is stored
Microsoft Support states: “Snapshots and the contextual information derived from them are saved and encrypted to your local hard drive.” This describes Microsoft’s documented storage design; it is not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every organization’s security policy will permit the feature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Controls available to the user
Recall is not silently enabled simply because a laptop is a Copilot+ PC. Users can choose whether to opt in, select which applications and websites are saved, pause saving, delete snapshots, or turn Recall off. If you share a computer or handle sensitive work, review those controls before enabling it and confirm that encryption and Windows Hello settings meet your organization’s requirements.
What a regular Windows laptop still provides
A complete Windows 11 computer without the Copilot+ designation
A regular Windows 11 laptop can provide the operating system, desktop applications, browser, peripherals, displays, ports, and other capabilities you need without meeting the Copilot+ floor. The absence of the label does not mean the computer is defective or incapable of useful AI work. It means Microsoft does not classify that exact system as meeting the additional requirements for the Copilot+ experiences.
Some local AI applications may still run
A non-Copilot+ laptop may include an NPU or another accelerator and can run compatible local AI applications. Support depends on the application, driver, processor, memory, and operating-system version. This possibility should not be confused with eligibility for Windows features that require a complete Copilot+ configuration.

The trade-off is that you must identify which Windows experiences you are giving up and verify application compatibility yourself.

Does Copilot+ mean better speed or battery life?
Everyday performance is model-specific
The 40 TOPS threshold measures NPU capability for qualification. It is not a benchmark of the CPU, GPU, storage latency, thermals, or application performance. Two qualifying laptops can behave very differently in compiling code, editing video, running virtual machines, browsing with many tabs, or playing games.
For a meaningful comparison, look for testing of the exact processor, memory capacity, storage configuration, cooling design, and power mode you intend to buy. A category badge cannot replace those measurements.
Battery life depends on the whole design
Battery capacity, display resolution and refresh rate, wireless radios, firmware, operating-system power management, processor limits, and workload all affect endurance. Copilot+ qualification alone does not establish superior battery life. Compare standardized results from the exact models, and check whether the test used a similar brightness, browser workload, and power profile to your own use.
Value depends on the features you will use
A Copilot+ laptop can be worthwhile when a required Windows experience, a supported local AI workflow, or a particular platform design justifies the cost. If you will not use those capabilities, paying for the qualification may provide little practical benefit. Conversely, a cheaper regular laptop can be poor value if it lacks the memory, storage, ports, screen, or application support your work requires.
How to verify a laptop listing before buying
- Identify the exact processor. Record the full model number, not merely a family name such as Ryzen AI, Core Ultra, or Snapdragon X.
- Confirm NPU performance. Check that the listed processor or SoC has an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more under Microsoft’s current Copilot+ requirements.
- Check installed memory. Confirm at least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM. Do not assume that every configuration of a processor family includes this amount.
- Check storage type and capacity. The current minimum is 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. A smaller drive can disqualify an otherwise capable platform.
- Verify Windows and regional availability. Confirm that the device ships with a supported Windows 11 edition and that the Copilot+ experiences you want are available in your language and region.
- Check feature-specific conditions. Read the current requirements for Recall, Automatic Super Resolution, Click to Do, or any other feature you intend to use. Some require particular processor families, games, subscriptions, security settings, or an internet connection.
- Compare independent tests of the exact model. Review performance, battery, noise, thermals, display quality, ports, and price for the precise RAM and storage configuration.
Which type of laptop fits which buyer?
Choose Copilot+ when a named feature matters
Choose a Copilot+ PC when you specifically want access to a supported Copilot+ experience and are willing to meet its conditions. This is the clearest reason to pay attention to the category: eligibility for features that a regular Windows 11 laptop may not provide.
- You want to evaluate Recall and accept its opt-in, encryption, biometric, and storage requirements.
- You use a supported workflow for Click to Do or Agent in Settings.
- You play one of the games supported by Automatic Super Resolution on compatible Snapdragon X Series hardware.
- You need an NPU-qualified platform for software that explicitly requires Copilot+ hardware.
Choose a regular Windows laptop when fundamentals matter more
A regular Windows laptop is often the sensible choice when your priorities are a particular screen, keyboard, port layout, graphics capability, upgrade path, price, or application environment and none of your required tasks depends on Copilot+ qualification. Compare real specifications rather than treating the category name as a quality ranking.

Wait or compare more closely when the feature list is changing
Copilot+ features and requirements are still subject to change. If a purchase depends on a feature that is listed as coming soon, limited by region, or available only in a particular language, verify its current status at the time of purchase and retain the retailer’s exact configuration details.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: assuming the processor family guarantees qualification
Fix: Check the complete configuration. Microsoft lists processor families, but eligibility applies to the processor, NPU, memory, storage, and Windows requirements together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Mistake: treating 40 TOPS as a general speed rating
Fix: Use 40 TOPS only as the NPU eligibility threshold. Use model-specific CPU, GPU, application, and battery tests for performance decisions.
Mistake: assuming every Copilot+ feature works everywhere
Fix: Confirm the feature’s current device, processor, language, region, game, subscription, and connectivity requirements. Click to Do actions and other capabilities can vary.
Mistake: assuming all processing is offline
Fix: Check whether the operation is local or cloud-assisted. Some image-generation and editing tasks require an internet connection.
Mistake: enabling Recall without checking storage and security
Fix: Confirm 50 GB of free space, encryption, Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security, and the biometric requirement before opting in. Monitor free space because automatic snapshots pause below 25 GB.

Copilot+ is best understood as a hardware-and-software eligibility class. Its concrete advantage is access to designated Windows experiences, not a blanket promise of higher speed, longer battery life, or better value. Verify the exact processor and NPU, at least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, at least 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage, and the requirements of the individual feature you want. If those experiences are unimportant, a regular Windows laptop may deliver the better balance of price and hardware for your work.
