To convert an image to Base64 in a browser, select the local file and read it with FileReader.readAsDataURL(). The result is a complete data URL, such as data:image/png;base64,.... Use that whole value where an image URL is expected; if a form or API asks for only Base64, remove everything through the comma and send the payload alone.
What image-to-Base64 conversion gives you
Base64 represents binary bytes as ASCII text. It does not identify the original image format by itself. A data URL combines a media type, an optional ;base64 marker, a comma, and the encoded data. Its general form is data:[<media-type>][;base64],<data>; for example, a PNG data URL starts with data:image/png;base64,. MDN’s data URL reference describes the syntax and behavior.
- Complete data URL: includes the prefix and encoded payload. Use it when the destination expects an image URL or data URL.
- Raw Base64 payload: contains only the encoded characters after the comma. Use it when the destination explicitly requests Base64 data rather than a URL.
Do not remove the prefix by default: the required output depends on the field or API you are filling in. A data URL also does not resize or otherwise optimize an image; it encodes the image file’s bytes.
Convert a local image in your browser
This small, self-contained page reads the selected file in the browser and lets you copy either output form. It requires no framework or server code. Save it as an HTML file, open it in a modern browser, choose an image, then select the output you need.

</html>FileReader.readAsDataURL(file) reads the selected file and, when complete, returns a data URL. The page keeps the full result, then derives the payload-only version by taking the substring after the first comma. That comma separates the data URL declaration from the encoded content. MDN notes that a readAsDataURL() result is not directly just Base64: remove the declaration first if a destination asks for the payload alone. See MDN’s FileReader documentation.
Using the result
- Choose the image file and wait for the status to report conversion.
- Choose Complete data URL for an image URL field, or Base64 payload only when the receiving system explicitly asks for raw Base64.
- Copy the output and paste it into the destination. If it rejects the value, check whether it expects the other output mode, a particular MIME type, or a smaller image.
The file input uses accept="image/*" as a selection hint; it is not a guarantee that every selected image format will be readable or accepted by a receiving service. The browser’s data URL carries a media type when available, but the destination may impose its own format requirements.

HTMLCanvasElement.toDataURL() is useful when conversion is part of a canvas workflow, for instance after drawing an image at new dimensions. It returns a data URL, defaults to PNG, and can request a supported format. For large images, MDN warns that toDataURL() encodes the entire image into an in-memory string and recommends considering toBlob() with an object URL instead. MDN documents canvas data URL export.

Use FileReader when the goal is simply to represent the selected file’s bytes. Use canvas only when you need a transformation or format conversion; drawing and exporting may change the image data, dimensions, or format.

Base64 output is text representing binary data, so it is larger and less convenient to handle than the original file. Inline data URLs are most practical for small resources. Large strings can be cumbersome to store, pass in requests, or embed in HTML and CSS. If the purpose is to send an image to an API, check that API’s request-size limit and whether it accepts a URL, raw Base64, or a multipart file upload before converting.
Browsers do not have a required common maximum data URL length. MDN currently reports implementation limits of 512 MB for Chromium and Firefox and 2048 MB for Safari/WebKit; these are browser limits, not sensible targets for embedding images or guarantees that a page, application, or API will accept such a value. Consult MDN’s data URL reference for browser-specific details, which can change.

For a large canvas image, prefer a Blob workflow where possible rather than generating one enormous Base64 string with toDataURL(). If you must produce Base64, consider reducing the source image’s dimensions or encoding an appropriate format first, while checking the quality and compatibility requirements of the destination.
Privacy and security when converting online
The browser example above reads the selected file through the browser’s FileReader API. That code does not send the file to a server. This is specific to the example’s implementation; it should not be generalized to an online converter unless that service’s file-handling behavior has been verified. A converter website may process files differently, so review its stated handling and privacy terms before uploading sensitive images.

A data URL is intended for use as an embedded resource in appropriate contexts, not as a way to bypass browser security controls. MDN explains data URL security behavior.

Troubleshooting
- The output begins with
data:image/..., but my API rejects it. The endpoint may require only the Base64 payload. Select payload-only output, or remove the prefix through the comma. Confirm the API’s exact field format first. - The destination says the image type is unsupported. Base64 encodes bytes; it does not turn one image format into another. Check the file’s actual format and the destination’s supported media types. If conversion is needed, decode or draw the image and export it in a supported format.
- The output is huge or the page becomes slow. Large data URLs can be unwieldy, and canvas
toDataURL()stores the encoded result as an in-memory string. Reduce dimensions or use a Blob/object URL workflow where the destination permits it. - The browser reports a read error or output is blank. Ensure a file was selected and that the browser can read it. Try another supported image file; the example displays an error if FileReader cannot complete.
- The copy button does not copy. Clipboard access can be restricted by browser security or page context. The example selects the text so it can be copied manually.
- The online converter asks me to upload a private image. General browser documentation cannot establish a third-party converter’s upload or retention practices. Use a local browser workflow or verify that specific service’s privacy and file-handling claims before proceeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Base64 conversion change image quality?
Encoding represents the file’s bytes as text; it does not itself resize or recompress the image. A separate canvas transformation or format conversion can change image data.
Can I use a Base64 string directly in an HTML image?
Use the complete data URL in the image source when that is the intended embedding method. A payload without its data URL declaration does not specify the media type.
Is Base64 the same as a data URL?
No. Base64 is the encoded payload; a data URL adds a media-type declaration and separator before that payload.
