Yes—you can convert 500 images to WebP without uploading them. A browser-local converter reads the files selected with <input type="file" multiple>, sends a limited number of jobs to Web Workers, decodes each image, renders it on Canvas or OffscreenCanvas, and exports a WebP Blob. The files remain in the page and its workers; they are not posted to an application server.
The reliable approach is a bounded queue, not 500 simultaneous conversions. Validate inputs before decoding, release decoded bitmaps immediately, package results incrementally, and use ordinary Blob downloads as the universal export path. Features such as direct folder writing can be added when the browser supports the File System Access API.

What “local” conversion does—and does not—mean
When conversion is local, the browser receives the files from your operating system and processes their bytes inside the page, a worker, or both. A typical pipeline is:
- The page receives selected files through a multiple-file input.
- Validation checks type, extension, size, and pixel dimensions.
- A queue assigns a small number of files to workers.
- Each worker decodes one image, draws it to Canvas or OffscreenCanvas, and calls
convertToBlob({ type: "image/webp", quality })or the Canvas equivalent. - The worker returns the WebP Blob, dimensions, byte counts, and warnings.
- The page creates downloads or a ZIP after results are ready.
“No upload” means the image bytes are not sent to your application server. The page can still download JavaScript, WebAssembly codecs, fonts, or other libraries when it loads. If that distinction matters for a sensitive workflow, self-host the application and codec files or run the page offline after it has loaded.

A local converter also does not automatically preserve every property of an original file. Canvas output normally removes EXIF and other metadata, and a simple single-frame decode can flatten an animated source. Make those behaviors visible before conversion rather than implying that WebP is a lossless copy.
Why 500 files require a queue
Five hundred compressed files are not necessarily five hundred small memory operations. A JPEG that occupies 4 MB on disk may decode to a bitmap hundreds of megabytes in memory. For an image with width w and height h, an uncompressed 8-bit RGBA surface is approximately w × h × 4 bytes, before decoder overhead, a second canvas, and the encoded output are counted.
Starting one task per file can therefore exhaust memory, trigger tab termination, or make the interface unresponsive. A bounded queue keeps only a few decodes active. When a result has been packaged, release the source object URL, close the ImageBitmap, and drop references to the input Blob and canvas. The useful limit is active decoded pixels, not merely the number of files.

Choose a conservative worker count
Begin with one worker on phones and two to four on desktop machines. More workers can improve throughput until CPU contention, codec startup, or memory pressure outweighs the benefit. Expose the count as a setting, cap it, and allow the user to pause. There is no device-independent “500-image” speed or memory guarantee; results depend on dimensions, formats, codec implementation, and hardware.
Keep the interface responsive
OffscreenCanvas allows rendering work in a worker, decoupling Canvas from the DOM. A worker queue prevents image decoding and encoding from blocking clicks, progress updates, and cancellation controls. If OffscreenCanvas is unavailable, a fallback can perform the same operations on a regular Canvas in short, scheduled batches, but it should warn that the page may be less responsive.
Inputs, limits, and a policy users can understand
Define the acceptance policy before a user selects hundreds of files. Validate both the MIME type and the filename extension; either one can be missing or misleading. A practical first pass is to allow JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and AVIF where the browser can decode them, and to add HEIC/HEIF only when a tested WebAssembly decoder is available.
| Input | Typical browser-local behavior | Policy to show in the UI |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Decodes broadly; Canvas export removes JPEG metadata. | Supported; orientation is applied before export. |
| PNG | Alpha transparency is retained by WebP when the drawing surface remains RGBA. | Supported; explain that metadata is not copied. |
| WebP | Can be decoded and re-encoded, but re-encoding a lossy file may reduce quality. | Supported; label the operation as a new encode. |
| AVIF | Availability varies by browser and operating-system decoder. | Accept only after a decode test; otherwise report “unsupported input.” |
| GIF | A basic image API commonly decodes one frame. | Warn that animation may be flattened to a still image. |
| HEIC/HEIF | Often needs a lazy WebAssembly decoder and adds startup cost. | Offer as optional support and identify decoder failure separately. |
| Animated WebP or other animation | A single Canvas draw does not preserve a frame sequence. | Warn that output is a still image unless an animation-aware encoder is used. |
Set hard limits before decoding
- Maximum input bytes per file, chosen for your target devices.
- Maximum width, height, and total pixels. Reject or offer a resize path before allocating a huge surface.
- Maximum number of selected files, if your product needs a predictable workload. A 50-file limit seen in one implementation is an application choice, not a browser limit.
- Duplicate-name handling, such as appending
-webpand a counter. - What happens to unsupported, corrupt, animated, or metadata-bearing files.

Build the conversion pipeline step by step
1. Collect files without uploading
Use a file input with multiple. Do not attach the files to a form submission or call fetch() with their contents. A directory picker can be an optional convenience, but the baseline should work with ordinary file selection.
<input id="files" type="file" multiple accept="image/jpeg,image/png,image/webp,image/avif,image/gif,image/heic,image/heif">
<button id="start" disabled>Convert</button>
<button id="pause" disabled>Pause</button>
<button id="cancel" disabled>Cancel</button>
<progress id="progress" value="0" max="1"></progress>
<div id="results"></div>
The accept attribute filters the chooser but is not validation. Inspect file.type, the lower-case extension, byte size, and (where practical) the file signature before placing a job in the queue.
2. Validate dimensions safely
Read only enough to determine whether the file is eligible, then decode it in a worker. If the image exceeds your pixel limit, either reject it or resize to a user-selected maximum. Resizing is an explicit transformation; never do it silently because it changes the output dimensions.

Record the original name, input byte size, and any validation warning. Keep the original File object available only until the worker has consumed it, then remove the reference so garbage collection can reclaim memory.

The main thread should own the queue and progress state. Each worker receives one job at a time and posts a result or a structured error. A simple scheduler looks like this:
const jobs = files.map((file, index) => ({ file, index, state: "queued" }));
const workerCount = Math.min(4, Math.max(1, navigator.hardwareConcurrency || 2));
let next = 0, active = 0, paused = false, cancelled = false;
function schedule() {
while (!paused && !cancelled && active < workerCount && next < jobs.length) {
const job = jobs[next++];
job.state = "running";
active++;
workers[active - 1].postMessage({
type: "convert",
id: job.index,
file: job.file,
quality: Number(quality.value)
});
}
}
function finished(id, result) {
const job = jobs[id];
job.state = result.error ? "failed" : "done";
job.result = result;
active--;
renderProgress(jobs.filter(j => j.state === "done" || j.state === "failed").length);
schedule();
}
In production, map worker references explicitly rather than relying on active - 1; the snippet illustrates the bounded pattern. Add pause, cancel, retry, and a final “all complete” state. On cancel, stop assigning new work, tell each worker to abort its current job where possible, clear queued File references, and revoke any result URLs already created.
4. Decode, orient, resize, and encode in a worker
Use createImageBitmap() where available, requesting the browser’s EXIF orientation handling. Draw to an OffscreenCanvas, then encode to WebP. The quality value is meaningful for lossy WebP; lossless mode is a separate choice and can produce larger files.
self.onmessage = async ({ data }) => {
if (data.type !== "convert") return;
const { id, file, quality } = data;
let bitmap, canvas, context;
try {
bitmap = await createImageBitmap(file, { imageOrientation: "from-image" });
const width = bitmap.width;
const height = bitmap.height;
canvas = new OffscreenCanvas(width, height);
context = canvas.getContext("2d", { alpha: true });
context.drawImage(bitmap, 0, 0);
const blob = await canvas.convertToBlob({
type: "image/webp",
quality: Math.min(1, Math.max(0, quality))
});
bitmap.close();
self.postMessage({
id,
name: file.name.replace(/.[^.]+$/, "") + ".webp",
blob,
width,
height,
inputBytes: file.size,
outputBytes: blob.size,
warning: null
});
} catch (error) {
if (bitmap) bitmap.close();
self.postMessage({ id, error: String(error) });
}
};
Feature-detect the orientation option and OffscreenCanvas. If a browser rejects the option, use a tested fallback that reads EXIF orientation and applies the corresponding transform before drawing. If OffscreenCanvas is missing, run the draw and export on the main thread in small batches or mark that browser as reduced-performance mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApply resizing before encoding when requested. Calculate the target rectangle while preserving aspect ratio, allocate only the target canvas, and report both original and output dimensions. Do not allocate a full-size canvas and then resize it if the source dimensions could exceed your memory limit.
5. Return a complete result record
Every completed row should contain:
- Original filename and generated WebP filename.
- Input and output byte sizes.
- Width and height after any requested resize.
- Conversion state: completed, failed, cancelled, or skipped.
- A warning for flattened animation, removed metadata, unsupported input, or a fallback decoder.
Showing byte sizes lets users judge the result rather than assuming WebP always saves space. For example, a transparent PNG with simple graphics may compress differently from a photographic JPEG, and an already-optimized source may become larger after re-encoding.
6. Package downloads without retaining everything forever
For individual files, create an object URL with URL.createObjectURL(blob), attach it to a download link, and revoke it when the link is removed or the user cancels. Keeping 500 object URLs and Blobs referenced indefinitely defeats the queue’s memory control.
A ZIP is convenient but requires temporary storage for the archive and its entries. Add completed results to a ZIP incrementally if your ZIP library supports streaming; otherwise warn that the final archive needs additional memory. Generate the archive only after the user requests it, not automatically while every result is still being displayed.

7. Add direct folder saving as progressive enhancement
The File System API can read files, write or save files, and access directory structures, but the user must explicitly grant access. showSaveFilePicker() is limited-availability and secure-context-only, so it cannot be your sole export method.
- Offer a “Save to folder” button only after feature detection and a secure-context check.
- Ask the user to choose a directory or file handle.
- Write each completed WebP through the granted handle, handling a denied permission as a normal user choice.
- Keep “Download files” or “Download ZIP” available in every browser.
Do not request directory access on page load. Permission should be tied to the user’s explicit save action.
Quality, transparency, metadata, and animation decisions
Choose quality by testing your own images
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression. A quality slider is more useful than a universal promise: lower lossy values generally trade fidelity for smaller files, while lossless mode preserves pixel data but may not reduce size for every source.

Do not advertise a fixed percentage reduction or a fixed conversion time.
Preserve alpha deliberately
Keep the drawing context in RGBA mode for images with transparency. A background fill before drawing converts transparent pixels to that color; do it only when the user asks for a flattened output. Show a background-color control if your workflow targets formats or destinations that cannot display alpha.
Explain metadata removal
Canvas export commonly omits EXIF, ICC, GPS, comments, and other container metadata. This can improve privacy, but it also removes camera orientation information after it has been applied and may remove color-profile details. State that metadata is stripped and provide a separate metadata-preserving path only if you have implemented and tested one.
Handle animated sources explicitly
A one-frame decode produces a still WebP. Detect animated formats when possible and mark the result “animation flattened.” Preserving animation requires a frame-aware decoder, timing information, and an animation-capable encoder; it is a different pipeline from single-image Canvas conversion.
Recommended Free Tools
Privacy and security checks for a genuinely local tool
Inspect the application’s network behavior if “zero uploads” is a requirement. Image bytes should never be placed in a request body, query string, analytics event, error-reporting payload, or remote thumbnail URL. A Content Security Policy can restrict unexpected connections, and self-hosting the JavaScript and WebAssembly assets removes dependency on third-party delivery at runtime.
Local processing does not make untrusted files harmless. Decoders are complex software. Keep the browser updated, isolate conversion in workers, impose byte and pixel limits, and treat decoder exceptions as recoverable job failures. Never render an original filename as unsanitized HTML; insert it as text to avoid markup injection.

Measuring speed and memory without misleading users
There is no reproducible, device-independent benchmark for exactly 500 images. A useful report names the device, browser version, input dimensions and formats, worker count, quality setting, resize policy, elapsed time, and peak memory observation.
- Create a small representative set: a large JPEG, a transparent PNG, an already-compressed WebP, and any AVIF or HEIC files you claim to support.
- Run one worker, then two and four, watching completion time and tab responsiveness.
- Repeat with the full batch while recording failures, retries, and whether the browser terminates the page.
- Compare output bytes and visual quality at the chosen quality value.
- Publish the conditions with the result; label them as measurements from that device, not guarantees.
For a command-line comparison, Google’s documented encoder example is cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp. A CLI is often preferable for repeatable scripted jobs, while a browser queue is convenient when installing software is not possible and local processing is required.
Browser workflow or installed command line?
| Need | Browser-local queue | Command-line encoder |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy boundary | Files stay in the page and workers when implemented without network requests. | Files stay on the machine unless a script sends them elsewhere. |
| Setup | Open a page; no installation for users. | Install and learn a tool, then script it. |
| 500-file throughput | Depends on worker count, browser limits, and decoded-pixel memory. | Usually easier to automate and repeat with predictable arguments. |
| Output control | Quality, resize, alpha, and warnings can be exposed in a UI. | Fine-grained flags and batch scripting are available. |
| Automation | Best for interactive, one-off jobs. | Best for scheduled folders, build systems, and recurring pipelines. |
| Compatibility | Subject to browser decoder and File System API support. | Subject to installed codec and operating-system support. |
Troubleshooting a 500-image batch
The tab freezes or crashes
- Reduce active workers to one or two.
- Lower the maximum decoded pixel count or enable a target resize.
- Close previews and revoke object URLs as soon as downloads are created.
- Do not build a ZIP until individual results are complete.
- Retry the batch in smaller groups to identify unusually large or corrupt inputs.
Some files are rejected
Show the exact reason: unsupported MIME type, extension mismatch, byte limit, pixel limit, decoder failure, or animation policy. For AVIF and HEIC, verify browser support or load the optional WebAssembly decoder only when such a file is encountered.
Photos are rotated incorrectly
Apply EXIF orientation during decode or perform the documented transform before drawing. Test all eight orientation cases, including mirrored images. Once the pixels are oriented, metadata removal will not undo the visual correction.
Transparent images have a black or white background
Check that the Canvas context supports alpha and that no background rectangle is being painted. If flattening is intentional, expose the chosen background color and state that transparency will be lost.
Downloads have duplicate or missing names
Derive the output name from the original basename, append .webp, and maintain a case-insensitive set of names. Add a counter for collisions and keep the original name in the result record.
Save-to-folder is unavailable
Fall back to Blob downloads or a ZIP. The File System Access path is a convenience, not a requirement, and should not prevent conversion in browsers that lack it.
A practical checklist before releasing the converter
- Files are selected locally and no upload request contains image bytes.
- Input type, extension, file size, and pixel dimensions are validated before expensive work.
- Worker concurrency is bounded and adjustable.
- Pause, cancel, retry, and per-file progress states work.
- Decoded bitmaps, canvases, source references, and object URLs are released promptly.
- Orientation, alpha, animation, metadata, and unsupported-format policies are visible.
- Output rows include dimensions, input bytes, output bytes, and warnings.
- Individual downloads work everywhere; ZIP and folder saving are optional enhancements.
- Secure-context and permission failures are handled without trapping the user.
- Performance claims include device, browser, dimensions, formats, worker count, quality, and resize settings.
When a local browser converter is the right choice
Use it for an occasional 500-file batch, confidential images that should not reach a service, or a workflow where users cannot install software. Use a scripted command-line process when the same conversion runs repeatedly, must be reproducible in a build pipeline, or needs extensive format and metadata controls. For a website or CDN pipeline, perform optimization during deployment or ingestion rather than asking every visitor to process a large folder interactively.
The Bottom Line
A private 500-image WebP conversion is practical in a browser when it uses a bounded worker queue, strict pixel and file limits, prompt memory cleanup, explicit handling for orientation, transparency, animation, and metadata, and Blob-download fallbacks. Treat speed, memory use, and size reduction as measurements of a stated device and configuration—not universal guarantees.
