For less time spent fighting each foe in CONTROL Resonant, start with the game’s free Assist Mode: it lets you adjust outgoing damage and falter, among other combat mechanics. Remedy also addressed early complaints about enemy durability in its launch hotfix, so advice about “spongy” enemies depends partly on which game update you’re playing.
What back buttons can—and can’t—change
GamesRadar+’s October 1, 2026 article describes one player’s fatigue from repeatedly pressing an attack button during longer sessions. Its suggestion is to map attack to a spare rear or shoulder button, putting the same input in another place. That may be a useful convenience if the standard button is tiring or awkward to reach; it does not change attack damage, enemy health, or combat difficulty. The article’s concern about possible strain is not proof that a rear button prevents injury.
A simple remap duplicates or relocates an existing input. Mapping a macro that triggers a whole attack sequence is different: whether that works depends on the controller’s software, platform, the game’s remapping options, and applicable game rules. Check those details for your exact setup rather than assuming every controller or platform supports the same functions.
Use Assist Mode to reduce the combat friction directly
Remedy designed Assist Mode to let players adjust individual combat mechanics instead of choosing only one overall difficulty level. Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov has described the philosophy this way: “if you run into a wall and the friction becomes too much, we’d much rather you adjust the rules and keep playing than put the controller down and stop.” The game’s controls are available during gameplay, according to Remedy’s Assist Mode documentation.

If enemies are taking too long to defeat, begin with the settings that affect damage and stagger:
- Outgoing Damage: adjust how much damage your attacks deal.
- Outgoing Falter: adjust how readily attacks falter enemies, creating openings for executions.
- Enemy Aggression: reduce pressure from enemies if the problem is staying alive long enough to attack.
Other listed options include Perfect Dodge Window, enemy projectile speed, incoming damage, ability recovery, and melee positioning. For a more substantial change, Remedy also lists Immortality, One-Hit Kills, and One-Hit Falters. These are distinct ways to change combat; choose the least disruptive adjustment that addresses what is making a fight frustrating.

Remedy describes close-range combat as a matter of reading enemy attacks, managing staggers and status effects, and timing dodges. Its combat overview also explains a loop in which melee hits restore combat ability resources, abilities stun enemies for executions, and executions temporarily boost melee damage. That can offer another approach to fights, though it is not a guarantee that every enemy will feel less durable.
Why patch version matters
When CONTROL Resonant launched on September 24, 2026, Remedy acknowledged feedback that enemy health pools felt too high, that too many hits were needed to falter enemies for executions, and that Dylan felt weak early in combat. In its launch hotfix, version 1.3.3, the developer reduced base health and falter level for most enemies and increased maximum Aberrant and Ability Strength. Those are the changes Remedy announced for that hotfix; they should not be taken as a description of every later version. See the launch announcement and hotfix notes for the stated changes, and check the update notes for the version you have installed.

When a controller with rear controls makes sense
If reaching or repeatedly pressing the standard attack control is your main concern, a remappable rear button may be worth considering after trying the game’s own settings. GamesRadar+ names the GameSir Tarantula 8K as a controller its author has played with, and also mentions the Nacon Revolution X Unlimited and FlyDigi Apex 5. Those examples do not establish that every model, revision, or configuration works on every platform.
Before choosing one, verify support for your platform—PS5, Xbox, or PC—as well as how many rear controls it has, where they sit, and how remapping is configured. Macro support, connection method, and compatibility can also vary by controller and setup. The PlayStation product page lists CONTROL Resonant for PS5 and notes DualSense vibration and trigger effects, but that does not confirm support for rear controls on any third-party controller: PlayStation’s game page.
