Xbox Series S currently runs Control Resonant in a single 864p mode targeting 30 frames per second. Unlike the Xbox Series X version, the Series S build does not provide a 60fps performance mode in the comparison evidence available for 2026. Changing the console to 120Hz, replacing an HDMI cable or enabling VRR cannot create a graphics mode that the game does not include.
What the Series S version actually offers
A September 19, 2026 comparison by Pure Xbox, summarizing Digital Foundry footage and measurements, describes one Xbox Series S graphics mode: 864p with a 30fps target. The result is reported as largely stable, including in demanding scenes. The mode appears to use settings comparable to the Xbox Series X performance presentation, but it remains capped at 30fps on Series S.

The Xbox Series X version is described differently: it has separate modes targeting 60fps and 30fps, with native internal resolutions of 864p and 1260p across those modes. That difference is a game-build and hardware configuration decision, not evidence that a Series S console is malfunctioning.
| Console | Graphics modes reported | Resolution figures reported | Frame-rate target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | One mode | 864p | 30fps, largely stable |
| Xbox Series X | Two modes | 864p and 1260p | 60fps and 30fps targets |
These figures describe the launch-era configuration covered by the 2026 comparison. They should not be read as a guarantee that every future patch will use the same settings.

Why setting the Xbox to 120Hz does not unlock 60fps
Frame rate and display refresh rate are separate. Frame rate is how many images the game renders each second. Refresh rate is how often the television or monitor can update its panel. A 120Hz display can show a 60fps signal smoothly, but it cannot make a game render frames that its software does not produce.
Remedy’s CONTROL Resonant support guidance states that a higher display refresh rate can provide smoother output, but does not force the game to render at that rate or create a graphics mode the game does not provide. The Xbox’s 120Hz option therefore prepares the signal path; it is not a performance-mode switch.

Check whether a display problem is being mistaken for a frame-rate cap
The following checks can fix an incorrect signal, missing HDR, unstable image or VRR problem. They will not convert the Series S 30fps mode into 60fps.

- Update the software. Install every available Control Resonant update, then install any pending Xbox system update.
- Quit the game completely. Use the Xbox guide to quit Control Resonant rather than resuming it from Quick Resume. If it remains listed in Quick Resume, remove it and launch the game again.
- Restore in-game defaults. Open the game’s display or graphics menu, restore its defaults and check whether another mode is actually listed. On Series S, the reported build supplies only one mode.
- Verify Xbox display settings. Go to Settings > General > TV & display options. Check resolution, refresh rate, 4K TV details, HDR and VRR one at a time so you can identify which setting changes the signal.
- Test the direct connection. Connect the console directly to the television or monitor for one test. Use the supplied or a certified high-bandwidth HDMI cable, try another compatible HDMI input and enable the display’s enhanced-HDMI or gaming mode where applicable.
- Update and restart the display. Install television or monitor firmware updates, then power-cycle both the display and Xbox.

- Mode availability: Series X has reported 60fps and 30fps choices; Series S has one reported 30fps mode.
- Internal resolution: The comparison reports 864p on Series S, while Series X modes are reported at 864p and 1260p.
- Motion consistency: The Series S mode is described as largely stable at its 30fps target. A 120Hz panel does not change that target.
- Image clarity: Resolution and graphics settings affect detail independently of the television’s refresh rate.
- Display-path support: A 120Hz/VRR display and suitable cable can expose or stabilize supported signals, but cannot add a missing game mode.
Could a later patch add 60fps on Series S?
No official dated announcement for a Series S 60fps patch is established in the available 2026 material. Treat the 30fps configuration as current unless Remedy publishes patch notes or a mode announcement that specifically changes Series S support. A future update could alter the options, but changing the console’s output settings is not a substitute for such an update.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Choose Series S if a stable 30fps presentation is acceptable and you already own the console. Consider Series X if a selectable 60fps mode is a deciding requirement. Buying a 120Hz television, VRR display or new HDMI cable is sensible only for broader display compatibility; none of those accessories can raise Control Resonant from its supplied Series S 30fps mode.
