Control Resonant and Control: How the Oldest House Connects to the Remedy Universe

Control Resonant continues the story of Control through the Faden siblings: Jesse’s search for Dylan at the Oldest House sets up the Hiss crisis that leaves him in a coma, and Dylan becomes the sequel’s sole playable character. The action moves from the Federal Bureau of Control’s shifting headquarters to a paranaturally warped Manhattan. Remedy also officially places Control and Alan Wake in its Remedy Connected Universe, but that broad link does not mean every crossover detail—or a required play order—is established.

How is Control Resonant connected to Control?

The direct connection is Dylan Faden’s history with the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), the secretive agency whose headquarters is the Oldest House. In the first Control, Jesse Faden enters that shifting New York building while searching for her brother. In Control Resonant, Dylan is the lead: he wakes years after the events at the Oldest House, while Jesse is missing.

That makes Resonant a continuation of the first game’s sibling story, not simply another adventure set in a world with similar supernatural phenomena. Remedy’s official description presents the sequel as carrying forward familiar threats, characters and echoes of earlier events, while also calling it a new entry point. The story advances the Fadens’ history, but the setting, perspective and central crisis change.

The premise is therefore both a sequel hook and a handoff. The first game follows Jesse as she searches for Dylan and becomes Director of the FBC; the next puts Dylan in control of the playable perspective. Jesse is missing when he wakes, so the siblings’ relationship remains a key question rather than a story thread the sequel leaves behind. Remedy Co-Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen summarized the focus on PlayStation.Blog on June 2, 2026: “The Fadens’ arcs revolve around each other, and that’s what propels their shared story.”

What happened to Dylan in the Oldest House?

The Oldest House is the FBC’s headquarters: an extraordinary building that can shift and change. Remedy’s description of the original game places Jesse there as she becomes Director of an agency under attack from otherworldly forces. Dylan’s path through that crisis explains why he is at the center of the sequel.

  1. The FBC took Dylan as a child. According to Remedy Co-Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen’s PlayStation.Blog account, the Bureau raised him in an institution.
  2. The Hiss took him over during the crisis at the Oldest House. The Hiss is one of the threats that figures in the first game and in Resonant.
  3. Jesse stopped him and cleansed him. Afterward, Dylan fell into a coma.
  4. He wakes years later, with Jesse missing. That is the situation that leads into Resonant.

The account establishes a clear chain between the games: the FBC’s treatment of Dylan, the Hiss incident and Jesse’s actions are part of his backstory when the sequel begins. It does not, by itself, resolve every question about what happened during the intervening years or explain all the circumstances behind Jesse’s disappearance.

That distinction matters for anyone trying to separate the established setup from unanswered plot questions. Remedy’s account gives readers the essential bridge—childhood in FBC custody, possession during the Hiss crisis, cleansing by Jesse, then a coma—but does not spell out every detail of Dylan’s life or the precise timeline between the coma and his awakening. Those gaps should be treated as story territory, not filled in with guesses.

What changes in Resonant?

The sequel changes both the playable perspective and the main setting. Jesse was the protagonist of Control; Dylan is the sole playable character in Control Resonant. The story still keeps Jesse central because the siblings’ arcs revolve around one another. In Kasurinen’s words, “The Fadens’ arcs revolve around each other, and that’s what propels their shared story.”

The Oldest House gives way to Manhattan. Remedy describes a new resonance, along with the Hiss and Mold, warping the city. The Remedy-authored Xbox Wire announcement adds that gravity can be altered, streets reshaped, and the city explored through interconnected zones. It also describes exploration and character progression as parts of the experience. These details establish a city-scale setting with supernatural distortions; they should not be mistaken for a complete account of the plot or a map of every location.

PRAGMATA - PlayStation 5
  • Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
  • Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
  • Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
  • Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!

This is a meaningful change in scale. The first game’s central setting is the FBC’s headquarters, a shifting building that frames Jesse’s encounter with the agency and its attack. In Resonant, the supernatural disruption reaches across Manhattan, where altered gravity and reshaped streets affect the city’s layout. Remedy describes connected zones rather than providing a full map or a list of every location, so the clearest comparison is building-centered investigation versus exploration through a distorted city.

The shift does not erase the Oldest House. It changes its role: the building and the events there are the story’s foundation, while Dylan’s return and the altered city form the sequel’s immediate situation. Players who know the first game will recognize why the Hiss and the Fadens matter; newcomers are not expected to arrive with every piece of that history memorized.

Is Alan Wake part of the Control universe?

Yes, in the broad sense Remedy itself has stated: company investor material says Control and Alan Wake are linked through the Remedy Connected Universe (RCU). That supports describing the games as part of a shared universe. It does not establish every fan theory, spell out every cross-franchise plot connection or provide a complete continuity guide.

Remedy’s Xbox Wire announcement says returning players may recognize familiar threats, characters and past events, while also presenting Resonant as a new entry point. Those statements support a connection to the wider mythology without making prior knowledge of all the connected games a stated prerequisite. The official framing also does not supply a mandatory play order or an exhaustive list of crossovers.

In particular, the broad RCU statement should not be stretched into detailed claims about specific events unless those claims are supported by material that explains them directly. The fact that two franchises share a universe is useful context, but it is not the same as saying every title is equally important to Dylan’s story. Remedy’s investor presentation in May 2026 names the shared-universe link; that is the solid basis for saying the franchises are connected, not a license to treat every fan interpretation as confirmed canon.

Do you need to play Control before Control Resonant?

No prior game is described as a requirement. Remedy’s Xbox announcement calls Resonant a new entry point, and the official materials do not prescribe a required order. Playing Control first is the most direct way to understand the Oldest House, the FBC and the history between Jesse and Dylan. Treat it as helpful context, not a condition for starting the sequel.

There is also a difference between understanding the premise and recognizing every reference. A newcomer can begin with Dylan waking after a coma while Jesse is missing and learn the sequel’s immediate situation from there. Someone who has played Control will already know that Jesse’s search for her brother and the Hiss crisis at the Oldest House are the events behind that setup. The Xbox Wire announcement captures this balance: Senior Communications Manager Miika Huttunen wrote, “Though Control Resonant continues the broader mythology introduced in Control, it’s crafted as a new entry point.”

An optional play path

Game or material What it adds How necessary it is for Resonant
Control The direct Oldest House, FBC, Jesse and Dylan context. The most relevant background, but not stated to be required.
Alan Wake 2 Context for Remedy’s other franchise, which the company identifies as linked to Control through the RCU. Optional broader-universe context; no official source here says it is necessary preparation for Resonant.

If you have time for one earlier game, choose Control for the closest story connection. If your interest is the wider Remedy universe, Alan Wake 2 is part of the other franchise Remedy names in its RCU framing. The games have different tones—Control is described as supernatural third-person action-adventure, while Alan Wake is commonly associated with survival horror—but that distinction is not a reason to treat one as a mandatory chapter in the other’s plot.

For a short catch-up, prioritize the sibling and FBC story rather than trying to complete every connected title. Control is the useful choice for understanding Dylan’s history and the Oldest House. Alan Wake 2 can broaden familiarity with Remedy’s other franchise, but the stated shared-universe connection alone does not make it required homework for the sequel. There is no officially prescribed order in the announcements described here.

What is known about Control Resonant’s release and platforms?

How popular are the connected games?

Remedy’s May 2026 investor presentation reported more than 6 million lifetime copies sold for Control and more than 2 million for Alan Wake 2. It also reported more than 1 million Control copies sold during 2025. These are company-reported figures, not figures described as independently audited. They show the commercial scale Remedy reported for the two franchises, but they do not measure how many players know the shared-universe connections.

The figures also show why the connection may matter to players arriving from either series: Remedy reported substantial sales for both games, but the sales totals say nothing about how much continuity a new player needs. The useful takeaway remains practical rather than statistical: Control offers the closest background for Dylan, while Alan Wake 2 is optional context for the broader franchise link.
