The system renders widget views in a separate process, requests timeline data on its own schedule, and supports animation primarily as a short visual cue when displayed content changes. Apple documents a maximum widget and Live Activity animation duration of two seconds—not perpetual motion.
Build the widget as a compact projection of app state. Use timelines for predictable future changes, reload requests when visible data actually changes, and a brief transition to make that change legible. If the requirement is uninterrupted frame-by-frame motion, use the foreground app or evaluate a qualifying Live Activity instead of promising continuous widget animation.

Why a widget cannot own a continuous animation loop
WidgetKit renders widget views on your behalf in a separate process. Having a widget visible on the Home Screen does not keep the widget extension continually active, and SwiftUI animation modifiers do not change that execution model.
A normal SwiftUI view can remain attached to an active app scene and update repeatedly. A widget is a system-managed snapshot of app data. The system decides when the provider is asked for another timeline and when a rendered entry is shown. There is therefore no supported frame clock, timer, or background execution guarantee that can drive uninterrupted animation.

#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Private APIs, tightly packed timeline entries, recurring background work, or a background mode used outside its intended purpose cannot turn the widget into an always-running surface. They also create reliability and review risk.
What WidgetKit animation actually supports
Apple documents animation as a way to indicate a content update. The documented maximum duration for animations in widgets and Live Activities is two seconds. That limit describes an update-associated effect, not a license for an endless loop.
Use a short transition when a value changes—for example, a progress number, status label, or icon state. The static result must remain understandable after the transition ends and in contexts where animation is suppressed.

Always-On and reduced-luminance displays
On devices with an Always-On display, widgets do not perform animations while the screen is in its reduced-luminance state, which preserves battery. Design the resting view so the essential value, status, and time-sensitive meaning are clear without motion.
Deployment-target differences
Widget and Live Activity animation behavior differs across earlier operating-system versions. Set an explicit deployment target, test every supported OS version, and avoid marketing language that implies identical animation behavior on all devices.
How timelines and reloads work
A timeline is a list of dated entries plus a reload policy. Each entry describes what the widget should display at a particular date; the policy tells WidgetKit the earliest time it should request another provider result. It does not promise that a new view will appear exactly at the entry date.

Refresh is adaptive. Apple says a frequently viewed widget typically receives a daily budget of roughly 40 to 70 refreshes, often translating to about 15 to 60 minutes between reloads. Those figures vary with usage, power, connectivity, device state, and system decisions; they are guidance, not an SLA.
Apple’s update guidance also recommends spacing timeline entries at least about five minutes apart. Entries spaced seconds apart should not be treated as a timer or animation engine, and the system may still coalesce or delay updates.

Generate future entries when the app can predict a meaningful change: an event starting, a countdown reaching a milestone, a scheduled status transition, or a known expiration. The widget then has useful content to show even when the app is not open.

Reload only when displayed data changes
Store shared app data in an app-group container or another supported shared mechanism. When the app changes information that the widget actually displays, ask WidgetKit to reload the relevant kind or kinds. A reload request is a request for reconsideration, not an immediate repaint or guaranteed execution time.
Keep the provider inexpensive and deterministic
The provider should read the latest shared state, construct useful entries, and return quickly. Treat missing, stale, or unavailable data explicitly: show a defensible last-known value or an understandable unavailable state rather than pretending that a background loop is still running.
A defensible pure-SwiftUI architecture
- Define the product contract. Decide whether users need a glanceable state with occasional updates or uninterrupted motion. Only the first requirement fits a conventional widget.
- Model the displayed state. Keep the widget’s model small: the value, timestamp, status, and any information needed to explain freshness.
- Calculate meaningful future entries. Add timeline entries for known future transitions, respecting the recommended spacing of about five minutes or more.
- Select a reload policy. Choose the policy that matches how soon new data could matter, while accepting that WidgetKit controls the actual request and presentation time.
- Trigger reloads from real changes. After the app writes new shared data, request a reload for the widget kind whose visible content changed. Do not use repeated requests as a substitute for a frame clock.
- Add a brief content transition. Animate the changed value or state for no more than the documented two-second maximum, then leave a useful static view.
- Design nonanimated fallbacks. Verify the same information is legible on Always-On reduced-luminance displays, during accessibility settings that reduce motion, and when the system presents a static rendering.
- Test scheduling uncertainty. Test cold launches, extended periods without opening the app, low-power conditions, stale data, delayed reloads, and every supported OS version.
Choosing the right surface
| Requirement | Widget | Live Activity | Foreground app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glanceable state and occasional data changes | Good fit; timelines and reload requests control updates. | Usually unnecessary unless the state is a qualifying ongoing event. | Works, but requires opening the app. |
| Uninterrupted frame-by-frame motion | Not supported as a product guarantee. | Not a loophole for arbitrary continuous animation; it updates event content and can animate changes. | Best fit while the app is active and its scene is running. |
| Who controls scheduling | WidgetKit and the system. | ActivityKit/system behavior plus permitted update mechanisms. | Your active app scene, subject to normal app lifecycle rules. |
| Always-On reduced-luminance behavior | Animation is suppressed; static information must work. | Design for the device’s supported presentation states. | Depends on whether the app is visible and active. |
Live Activities are intended for qualifying ongoing events and use ActivityKit with update mechanisms distinct from a widget timeline. They can communicate changing event data, but the cited animation behavior still concerns content changes, not guaranteed arbitrary continuous motion.

App Store review: what you can and cannot promise
Apple’s App Review Guidelines page identified here as last updated June 8, 2026, says in section 2.5.1 that apps may use only public APIs and must use APIs and frameworks for their intended purposes. Section 2.5.4 limits background services to their intended purposes, with examples including VoIP, audio playback, location, task completion, and local notifications.
Those rules make a system-managed widget timeline and an honest update animation defensible. They do not approve a hypothetical app in advance, and they do not guarantee a particular refresh cadence or reviewer outcome.
Write precise review notes
- Describe exactly what the widget displays and which widget families or configurations are supported.
- Explain how a reviewer adds the widget and what app action or data change causes its content to update.
- State that animation is a short transition accompanying a content update, not a continuously running loop.
- Provide any account, location, setup, or event data needed to exercise the feature.
- Keep review notes, screenshots, App Store copy, and observed behavior consistent.
Do not claim that a recurring timeline, a background workaround, or a feature label guarantees approval. Reviewers evaluate the submitted app and its use of public APIs in context.
Practical decision checklist
- If motion can stop after a short update cue, implement a WidgetKit timeline with a static fallback.
- If the display must move continuously, make the foreground app the primary surface.
- If the information represents a qualifying ongoing event, investigate a Live Activity without describing it as an unlimited animation channel.
- Record the deployment target and verify behavior on each supported OS.
- Measure product success by freshness and clarity, not by an assumed reload interval.
The Bottom Line
A pure-SwiftUI WidgetKit widget can animate a changed value briefly, but it cannot guarantee continuous native motion. Architect it around system-controlled timelines, meaningful reloads, and a clear static state; use the foreground app for a true render loop and reserve Live Activities for qualifying ongoing events.
