Continuous Delivery vs. Continuous Deployment: Key Differences

Continuous delivery keeps validated changes ready while preserving a production release decision. Continuous deployment automatically releases eligible changes after pipeline checks pass.

Continuous delivery keeps every validated change ready for production, but leaves the decision to release it to a person or business process. Continuous deployment removes that per-change production approval: changes that pass the configured pipeline go live automatically. The difference is the production release gate, not whether a team automates builds and tests.

How the two approaches move a change to production

Both approaches typically start when code is committed and integrated. A pipeline builds the change, runs automated checks, and may advance it through test or staging environments. Common steps include unit and integration tests, building, and provisioning resources; if a required check fails, the pipeline stops rather than advancing the change. The exact stages and controls depend on the team’s system and risk requirements. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes common pipeline stages and failure handling.

Continuous delivery: ready, with a release decision remaining

Continuous delivery automates validation and keeps a deployment-ready artifact available. A person or business process can still authorize production release, and tooling can execute that decision. A tested change therefore need not reach customers immediately. AWS distinguishes delivery from deployment by the approval step before production. AWS’s continuous delivery overview and its DevOps whitepaper explain this distinction.

Continuous deployment: eligible changes go live automatically

In continuous deployment, revisions that pass the configured pipeline flow to production without explicit approval for each change. That makes the checks and operational controls especially important: they determine which changes are eligible to reach customers. The definition does not prescribe one universal test suite, rollout method, or risk tolerance. AWS’s overview describes production deployment after the pipeline succeeds without a manual approval step.

Key differences at a glance

Question Continuous delivery Continuous deployment
What happens after checks pass? The change is ready for production; a separate release decision remains. The change proceeds to production automatically if it meets the configured criteria.
Is per-change production approval required? A human or business authorization can gate release. No explicit approval is required for each eligible change.
Who determines release timing? The team retains the production release decision. The pipeline releases when its configured criteria pass.
What is the central capability? Keep software deployable and enable safe, on-demand release. Automate each eligible production release.

The terms describe how changes are prepared and released; neither term alone specifies the deployment strategy used to roll out a particular release.

Which approach fits your software and release context?

Choose continuous delivery when readiness matters but timing needs a gate

Continuous delivery is useful when changes should be continuously validated and kept releasable, while production timing remains a deliberate decision. Customer timing, business readiness, operational coordination, and policy are practical reasons a team might retain that gate; they are examples, not universal requirements.

Consider continuous deployment when automatic release suits the product

Continuous deployment can fit software for which automatic production releases are appropriate and the organization trusts its checks and release operations. It is not a maturity badge. The objective is to make changes safe, low-risk, and sustainable to release, rather than to remove human approval for its own sake. DORA describes continuous delivery as a capability that supports on-demand production changes and advises starting there even if a team never adopts continuous deployment. DORA’s continuous delivery guidance.

Account for how the software reaches users

Continuous delivery principles can apply across services, infrastructure, firmware, mobile apps, mainframes, and regulated environments. Continuous deployment is particularly suited to web services; it cannot be applied in the same way to firmware or mobile apps, where distribution and release constraints differ. DORA discusses these contexts and the scope of the capability.

Keep deployment strategy separate from delivery terminology

Continuous delivery versus continuous deployment answers whether production release is gated. In-place, rolling, immutable, and traffic-splitting deployments are rollout methods: they describe how a change is applied and how traffic or instances are handled. A team can choose a rollout method within either kind of pipeline. Compare methods by potential failure impact, deployment time, downtime, rollback process, and whether code goes onto existing or new instances. AWS’s deployment-method guidance compares these characteristics.
