The workflow distinction is based on WPForms’ own comparison, not independent interface testing. Contact Form 7’s tag-based approach is not limited to basic text fields: its documentation covers text, number, date, selection, upload, hidden, and acceptance fields, along with styling and mail setup. Where submissions are stored
Contact Form 7 does not provide submission storage as a default feature. Its documentation points to Flamingo, a companion plugin that saves submitted messages in WordPress. WPForms says entry management in the WordPress dashboard is included with Basic and higher plans. That is a built-in feature of those WPForms plans, rather than a separate companion-plugin route.
If you need to search past inquiries, retain records, or manage leads inside WordPress, check exactly where submissions will live and who can access them before choosing. Also establish a retention and deletion policy that fits your organization’s needs.

Match features to the forms you actually need
Conditional logic, payments, and multi-page forms
WPForms identifies conditional logic and payment capabilities among its differentiators, with some functions limited to paid tiers. Its plan comparison is the place to verify whether a specific feature is included before subscribing. Do not assume every paid plan includes every feature.
Uploads and email setup
Contact Form 7’s documentation covers file-upload fields and mail configuration. If your form accepts files, check the allowed file types, size limits, storage location, and who can access uploaded material; those settings affect both usability and privacy.

Spam protection and integrations
Contact Form 7 documents integrations with Akismet, reCAPTCHA v3, Cloudflare Turnstile, Brevo, and Stripe. WPForms also promotes a broader set of integrations, but availability depends on the current plan. Compare the exact services you use against the current documentation and plan details rather than relying on a general feature label.
Privacy depends on configuration, not just the plugin
Contact Form 7’s WordPress.org listing says the plugin, in its default configuration, does not stealth-track users, store personal data, send data externally, or use cookies. The same listing warns that enabling certain integrations may send submitter information—including an IP address—to a service provider. Its examples include reCAPTCHA, Akismet, Constant Contact, Brevo, Stripe, and Cloudflare Turnstile. Review the relevant provider’s privacy policy and account for those data flows in your site’s privacy notices.
WPForms integrations and payment features can also involve third-party services. For either plugin, map what information a form collects, where it is sent or stored, and how long it is retained. The plugin name alone does not describe the site’s complete data handling.

Can you switch from Contact Form 7 to WPForms?
WPForms says its importer can convert Contact Form 7 forms into WPForms format. This is the vendor’s stated capability; it does not guarantee that every field, notification, integration, or embed will work unchanged. WPForms also notes that existing embeds or shortcodes on pages need attention.
- Back up the site. Preserve the current forms and configuration before making changes.
- Use a staging site. Run the import away from the live site so you can inspect the converted forms safely.
- Check every page with an old embed. Replace or update Contact Form 7 shortcodes where needed, then confirm the new form appears on the page.
- Submit test entries. Verify field behavior, notification recipients, mail delivery, spam controls, file uploads, and any integrations.
- Move to production only after verification. Keep the backup available until the replacement forms are working as intended.
Which plugin should you choose?
- Choose Contact Form 7 if tag-based editing suits you, your form needs are modest, and you want a free, open-source option.
- Choose WPForms Lite if you want a visual builder and its free feature set is sufficient for your forms.
- Consider a paid WPForms plan if a specific feature—such as built-in entry management or a required advanced workflow—justifies the recurring cost. Confirm the tier and renewal price first.
- Compare privacy and integrations if forms collect sensitive information or send data to marketing, spam-control, or payment services.
