There is no defensible universal winner between Contabo and Hetzner in 2026. Contabo’s published US plans emphasize comparatively large listed CPU and memory allocations at a term-based price, while Hetzner provides dated regional Cloud pricing and a documented 99.9% monthly availability target. The better choice depends on your required resources, users’ location, total bill after VAT and IPv4 charges, traffic policy, commitment period, and the service remedy you need.

Use the comparison below to match equivalent resources and calculate the recurring cost before ordering. Neither provider’s headline vCPU and RAM figures establish real-world application speed, and no matched independent benchmark is available for declaring one faster.

What the two providers publish in 2026

The available evidence describes different kinds of information. Contabo’s US pricing page presents Cloud VPS sizes and a displayed price tied to a 24-month term. Hetzner’s infrastructure documentation records a Cloud price adjustment effective June 15, 2026 for new orders and Cloud instance rescales; its listed amounts exclude VAT and IPv4.

Provider and example Published resources Published price and term Important qualification
Contabo Cloud VPS 4 (US page) 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM; storage and port specifications are shown on the live pricing page $4.40 per month displayed for a 24-month term US-page figure; do not generalize it to another country, currency, or billing term. Traffic is labeled unlimited but subject to fair-use conditions.
Contabo Cloud VPS 18 (US page) 18 vCPU, 96 GB RAM; storage and port specifications are shown on the live pricing page $39.20 per month displayed for a 24-month term US-page figure; do not treat the larger allocation as a performance benchmark.
Hetzner CX23 (Germany/Finland) Product tier and resources are defined in Hetzner’s regional price table €5.49 per month from June 15, 2026, excluding VAT and IPv4 Not a direct equivalent to a named Contabo plan without matching CPU, memory, storage, and network requirements.
Hetzner CPX22 (Germany/Finland) A different product tier from CX23 €19.49 per month from June 15, 2026, excluding VAT and IPv4 Do not compare this amount directly with CX23 or a Contabo plan simply by monthly price.

Check the live plan selector immediately before purchase: prices, available regions, taxes, IP charges, and terms can change. The official pages are Contabo’s Cloud VPS pricing and Hetzner’s 2026 price-adjustment documentation.

How to compare the real recurring cost

A monthly number is meaningful only after you put both offers on the same billing basis. Record the currency, contract term, VAT treatment, IPv4 fee, setup or renewal charges, storage add-ons, backups, and any transfer or egress charges.

Contabo’s term-based display

The Contabo US page displays $4.40 per month for Cloud VPS 4 and $39.20 per month for Cloud VPS 18 when a 24-month term is selected. If those displayed rates remained unchanged for the whole term, the simple two-year subtotals would be $105.60 and $940.80 respectively, before any taxes or extras that apply to your account. Those are arithmetic illustrations of the displayed rate, not a guarantee that the price, tax, or renewal terms will remain unchanged.

Hetzner’s exclusions

Hetzner’s €5.49 CX23 and €19.49 CPX22 figures are published excluding VAT and IPv4. Add the applicable VAT for your billing address and the current IPv4 charge before comparing them with a tax-inclusive quote elsewhere. Multiply the resulting monthly total by the number of months you actually expect to run the server; a short-lived project should not be evaluated as if it will use a 24-month commitment.

A practical cost worksheet

  1. Write down the plan’s advertised monthly amount and currency.
  2. Convert currencies using the rate your card or accounting system will actually apply, rather than assuming a favorable spot rate.
  3. Add VAT or sales tax according to the account’s billing country.
  4. Add IPv4 and any other mandatory address or service fees.
  5. Include storage, snapshots, backups, floating IPs, and transfer overage only when your selected configuration uses them.
  6. Multiply by the expected number of months and separately record the initial commitment or cancellation exposure.
  7. Recheck the total at checkout; the provider’s calculator is the authoritative amount for your account and region.

This process prevents the common mistake of comparing Contabo’s term-linked US display with a Hetzner number that explicitly omits VAT and IPv4.

Resources: why vCPU and RAM do not settle the decision

Contabo’s published range runs from 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM on Cloud VPS 4 to 18 vCPU and 96 GB RAM on Cloud VPS 18. Those figures make the plans easy to sort by capacity, but they do not identify the underlying CPU generation, sustained single-thread performance, contention behavior, storage latency, or application-level throughput.

Hetzner’s CX and CPX families are separate product tiers. CX23 and CPX22 therefore should not be presented as equivalent merely because both have a price in the same table. Match the dimensions that affect your workload:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • CPU behavior: Determine whether your application needs bursty shared vCPU capacity, predictable sustained compute, or high single-thread speed.
  • Memory: Size for the resident working set, database cache, operating-system overhead, and safe headroom during deploys or traffic spikes.
  • Storage: Compare capacity and the storage class or performance specification shown for the exact plan. The available Contabo extract confirms that storage specifications are listed but does not establish a cross-provider latency result.
  • Network: Check the port specification, transfer allowance, and egress policy for the selected region and product family.
  • Scalability: Confirm that the next larger size can be reached without a disruptive migration and that its recurring price still fits the budget.

For a performance-sensitive service, deploy the same operating-system image, application build, database dataset, and region on each candidate. Measure your own request latency, queue depth, disk I/O, CPU steal time, and recovery behavior over representative peak periods. Do not substitute a provider’s resource label for that test.

Network traffic and the meaning of “unlimited”

Contabo’s US pricing page labels traffic as unlimited, but that label is qualified by fair-use language. Contabo may throttle unusually high or disruptive traffic. Unlimited therefore means you should read the acceptable-use and fair-use conditions, not that every workload can transmit at an unrestricted rate indefinitely.

For Hetzner, confirm the included transfer, port speed, and any egress pricing in the current plan and region before ordering. The cited 2026 price-adjustment table supplies the CX23 and CPX22 prices but does not, by itself, establish a universal transfer allowance for every product family. A media distribution service, backup repository, game server, or data pipeline should model its outbound volume and obtain the applicable current terms.

Questions to answer for a traffic-heavy workload

  • How many gigabytes leave the server in a normal month and during a peak month?
  • Is traffic concentrated in one region or spread across continents?
  • Would throttling affect revenue, user experience, or backup recovery?
  • Are large transfers temporary, recurring, or unpredictable?
  • What monitoring or notification exists before an allowance or fair-use threshold is reached?

If the answers are uncertain, run a pilot and monitor actual egress rather than selecting a plan solely because its marketing label says unlimited.

Regions, latency, and data residency

Contabo’s locations page describes five German data centers serving Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, plus US East, US West, and US Central regions. Hetzner’s regional price documentation includes Germany, Finland, the USA, and Singapore, with product families varying by region. The city-level choices and inventory can differ, so confirm the live region selector at checkout.

Choose the region based on the people and systems that connect to the server:

  • Put interactive applications close to the majority of users to reduce round-trip latency.
  • Keep regulated or contractually restricted data in an allowed jurisdiction, documenting the region selected for production and backups.
  • Place databases and application servers in the same or a closely connected region when cross-region latency would affect transactions.
  • Check whether the exact plan you need is available in the required city; a provider may offer a family in one region but not another.

Neither a country label nor a provider-wide map proves the latency your users will experience. Test from the actual user networks or deploy a small regional probe before committing to a long term.

Availability commitments and what they do—and do not—prove

Hetzner documents a 99.9% monthly availability target for Cloud servers and vServers. Its SLA says, “We will make commercially reasonable efforts to ensure a monthly availability of 99.9% for every Cloud Server.” The measurement is per calendar month; compensation applies only when measured downtime exceeds the threshold and is issued as Cloud Credit.

That is a documented contractual commitment, not a promise that interruptions cannot occur. Read the SLA’s measurement rules, exclusions, claim process, and credit limits before treating it as a financial safeguard. Cloud Credit also offsets future service rather than automatically reimbursing lost revenue or consequential damage.

A comparable Contabo SLA was not established in the available evidence. Do not infer that Contabo has the same threshold or remedy, and do not turn Hetzner’s documented target into proof that it has better real-world uptime. For either provider, design application-level redundancy, backups, health checks, and a recovery plan if downtime matters.

Which provider fits common workloads?

Workload situation How to decide What to verify before purchase
Small website or API with predictable traffic Compare the smallest plans that meet memory and storage needs after VAT, IPv4, and term costs. Region, backup method, transfer allowance, and upgrade path.
Memory-heavy database or cache Start with the plan that provides adequate RAM headroom; Contabo’s larger listed allocations may be attractive on paper, but test sustained database behavior. Storage latency, I/O limits, CPU contention, snapshots, and restore time.
Compute-heavy worker Do not choose by vCPU count alone. Benchmark the actual job on the exact CPU family and region. Single-thread and sustained throughput, thermal or noisy-neighbor behavior, and scaling options.
Large downloads, backups, or media Model monthly and peak outbound traffic. Contabo’s unlimited label remains subject to fair use. Port speed, included transfer, egress charges, fair-use wording, and abuse controls.
Contract-sensitive production service Prefer the offer whose documented availability measurement and remedy match your contract obligations. SLA threshold, exclusions, claim deadline, and whether compensation is credit rather than cash.
Short experiment or seasonal project A lower monthly headline price may lose its advantage if it requires a long commitment. Minimum term, cancellation rules, renewal price, and data-export time.

A repeatable selection procedure

  1. Define the workload. Record peak requests, concurrent users, database size, RAM usage, storage growth, monthly egress, recovery-point objective, and recovery-time objective.
  2. Choose the required geography. List acceptable countries or regions and check each provider’s live inventory for the exact plan family.
  3. Set a minimum resource envelope. Specify required RAM, storage capacity, I/O behavior, CPU characteristics, and network speed before looking at price.
  4. Build equivalent configurations. Select the closest resources on each service; do not pair a low-tier Hetzner instance with a much larger Contabo allocation and call it a price comparison.
  5. Calculate the fully loaded total. Add VAT, IPv4, storage, backups, transfer, and the cost of the expected term.
  6. Read the operational terms. Check fair-use rules, abuse handling, cancellation, maintenance notices, SLA exclusions, and the remedy for downtime.
  7. Run a production-shaped pilot. Use the same code, dataset, region, TLS configuration, and monitoring on each candidate. Test normal load, peak load, deploys, restores, and a simulated failure.
  8. Choose the lowest-risk fit. Select the configuration that meets performance and residency requirements at an acceptable total cost—not simply the one with the lowest advertised monthly number.

Testing before you migrate production

A one-day synthetic speed test can hide the problems that matter most. A useful pilot should include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At least one normal operating period and one representative peak period.
  • Application latency at the percentile your users care about, not only the average.
  • Database query time, cache hit rate, CPU utilization, memory pressure, and disk wait.
  • Upload and download measurements from the primary user regions.
  • A backup followed by a full restore to a clean instance.
  • A redeploy or resize rehearsal so you know how much downtime and manual work scaling requires.
  • Monitoring alerts for disk space, memory exhaustion, failed health checks, and unusual outbound traffic.

Keep the pilot isolated from production credentials and personal data. Preserve the test configuration and measurements so a future price or region change can be evaluated against the same baseline.

Pitfalls that produce bad comparisons

Comparing different commitment periods

A 24-month Contabo display is not equivalent to a month-to-month Hetzner total. Show both the monthly figure and the expected term total, then assess the cost of leaving early.

Ignoring tax and IPv4

Hetzner’s published examples explicitly exclude VAT and IPv4. Adding those only after choosing a plan can reverse the apparent price advantage.

Best Value

Calling resource quantities performance results

More vCPU or RAM can improve capacity without improving single-thread latency, storage response, or application throughput. Test the exact workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming unlimited means unrestricted

Contabo’s fair-use qualification means unusually high or disruptive traffic may be throttled. Read the current terms for your workload.

Treating an SLA as insurance

A 99.9% target and Cloud Credit remedy do not compensate automatically for lost sales, data loss, or every interruption. Maintain independent backups and recovery procedures.

Choosing a country instead of a region

Latency, product availability, and data-residency outcomes depend on the specific city and plan. Confirm the selector at order time.

Decision checklist

  • Does the selected plan meet measured peak CPU, RAM, storage, and I/O needs?
  • Is the region close enough to users and legally acceptable for the data?
  • Have VAT, IPv4, backups, storage, transfer, and currency conversion been included?
  • Is the billing term acceptable if the project ends early?
  • Have traffic volume and fair-use or egress rules been documented?
  • Have you tested the exact plan rather than relying on vCPU and RAM labels?
  • Do the SLA measurement and remedy match the service’s business requirements?
  • Can you restore the application and data without provider-specific assumptions?

Bottom line for 2026

Contabo is the candidate to investigate when a term-based US quote and large listed resource allocations align with your budget, region, and traffic profile. Hetzner is the candidate to investigate when its regional Cloud tier, fully loaded price, and documented 99.9% availability framework fit your requirements. The published figures do not establish a universal speed, reliability, or value winner. Match the resources, normalize every recurring cost, verify the region and traffic terms, and let an application-specific pilot decide.
