Contabo offers OpenClaw as a 1-click application on its paid plans with no separate application charge. The 1-click part only automates the server-side install. You still connect over SSH, finish OpenClaw’s onboarding, supply a model provider and API key, and keep the agent configured, updated, and secured. Contabo’s setup guide is explicit that the configuration and day-to-day running of OpenClaw are yours.
This article covers what the installer does, where the support boundary sits, what the listed plans cost and include, and the security and reliability points that matter before you deploy. It draws on Contabo’s published setup guide, support pages, and OpenClaw hosting page, plus public user discussion. It does not include a hands-on installation or a performance benchmark, so nothing here measures how any plan runs OpenClaw.

What the 1-click install actually does
OpenClaw is an open-source agent that runs on your own server. It can automate tasks, work with AI models, and build workflows. Contabo’s support guide describes the installation path as follows:
- Log in to the Contabo customer panel and select your VPS or VDS.
- Choose Reinstall.
- Under Application Installation, select OpenClaw.
- Set an admin password and start the installation.
- Wait. Contabo says the installation may take several minutes.
That completes the server image. It does not complete the agent. The next stage happens inside a terminal.

Onboarding over SSH
After installation, Contabo’s guide has you connect by SSH as root and continue through OpenClaw’s onboarding wizard. The wizard offers two modes, QuickStart and Manual. During setup you must:
- choose a model provider and enter a valid API key;
- optionally configure messaging channels such as Telegram, WhatsApp, or Discord;
- optionally enable skills. Some skills need extra dependencies or keys before they work.
Contabo’s onboarding also warns that OpenClaw can read files and take actions when tools are enabled. Decide which tools you actually need before you switch them on, not after.
Reaching the Control UI
The Control UI is not exposed to the public internet by default. According to Contabo’s guide, it listens on localhost, usually on port 18789. To open it in a local browser, forward the port over SSH from your own computer:
Rank #2
ssh -L 18789:localhost:18789 root@SERVER_IP
While that session is open, browse to http://localhost:18789 on your machine. You will also need the gateway token. Keep it, or regenerate it, and store it somewhere safe. The localhost default is a sound choice, but it is not a complete security posture. Section 4 covers what remains your job.
Who handles what
Contabo’s support is scoped to the infrastructure beneath OpenClaw. The 1-Click Apps support page describes assistance with the VPS environment, including network, hardware, and initial add-on setup. Everything inside the application is a different matter. The table below sets out the split as Contabo’s documentation describes it.
| Area | Contabo’s documented role | Your responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Network and hardware of the VPS | Technical assistance on the infrastructure | Monitor your server and report platform issues |
| Initial add-on setup | Covered by 1-Click Apps support | Verify the installation completed and the app starts |
| OpenClaw configuration and usage | Refers you to the OpenClaw documentation | Configure providers, channels, skills, and tools |
| API keys, usage limits, and security | Not Contabo’s responsibility, per the setup guide | Manage keys, set spending limits, and harden access |
| Updates and troubleshooting of the application | Not Contabo’s responsibility, per the 1-Click Apps support page | Maintain, update, and repair OpenClaw yourself |
The phrase “pre-installed” describes the image, not a supported managed service. Treat the 1-click install as a fast start on infrastructure you run.

Plans and what they cost
Contabo’s OpenClaw hosting page listed the following Cloud VPS plans when checked on 7 October 2026. The monthly prices are promotional rates for the first 24 months, as stated on that page. Confirm them at checkout, along with region, billing period, tax, and any current offer.
| Plan | vCPU cores | RAM | SSD storage | Promotional monthly price (first 24 months) | Renewal price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS 4 | 4 | 8 GB | 100 GB | €5.50 | Not stated on the hosting page checked |
| Cloud VPS 6 | 6 | 12 GB | 200 GB | €7.50 | Not stated on the hosting page checked |
| Cloud VPS 12 | 12 | 48 GB | 400 GB | €25.00 | Not stated on the hosting page checked |
| Cloud VPS 18 | 18 | 96 GB | 600 GB | €49.00 | Not stated on the hosting page checked |
The same page presents automatic backups as available. The backup terms, retention, and whether they carry an extra fee were not stated on the page checked, so confirm them before you rely on them.
No public Contabo-specific OpenClaw benchmark, latency test, or uptime comparison exists in the sources reviewed for this article. Nothing here shows that a particular tier runs OpenClaw better or is better value. The right size depends on your workload: how many tools run concurrently, how much memory your skills need, and how much data the agent stores. Start with a plan that fits your expected load and resize only after you have observed real usage.

Model API charges are separate
The hosting price does not include model usage. Contabo’s guide warns that your chosen model provider may bill for API usage. Those charges depend on your provider, model, and how often the agent runs, and they will not appear on the VPS invoice. Estimate them separately, set usage limits with the provider, and check the bill during the first weeks. Do not assume that any model access is included with the server.

Contabo’s security guide states that self-hosting brings security responsibilities. It names prompt injection and credential theft as risks and recommends isolation and least privilege. An arXiv survey dated May 25, 2026 covers similar agent-security concerns, including high-privilege operations, persistent memory, skill poisoning, and supply-chain vulnerabilities. These sources explain the threat model. They do not show that any particular Contabo instance is compromised or insecure.
In practice, you should:
- use the localhost Control UI and SSH forwarding instead of exposing the port;
- replace the root-centred workflow with a dedicated non-root user where your setup allows it, and grant only the tools the agent needs;
- keep the gateway token and every API key out of shared files and chat logs;
- set spending limits with your model provider;
- install skills only from sources you trust, and check their dependencies before enabling them;
- keep the operating system and OpenClaw updated, and back up the configuration before each change.
The localhost default protects the Control UI from casual exposure. It does not manage credentials, privileges, updates, or any other service you expose on the same host.

What public user reports show
A Reddit discussion about hosting OpenClaw on a VPS includes operational reports. One user described agent configuration changes that broke other settings and needed SSH access to repair. Another commenter said they used versioning after unexpected changes. These are individual experiences from one thread. They are not a reliability study and do not establish a failure rate or a Contabo defect. The practical lesson is consistent with Contabo’s guidance: keep configuration under version control or take a snapshot before you change it, and keep SSH access working so you can recover.

Who this setup suits
- Good fit: you are comfortable with Linux, SSH, port forwarding, and reading service logs, and you want an always-on agent you control.
- Poor fit: you want a managed assistant with support for configuration and troubleshooting, or you need the agent to be hands-off.
- Check before committing: the all-in monthly cost, which includes your model provider’s usage charges, and the renewal price after the promotional period.
Contabo gives you a quick, low-cost route to a running OpenClaw server. Whether it works well for you depends on your ability to run that server after the first boot.
