Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: On current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, you normally cannot add RAM. Memory capacity, bandwidth, CPU and GPU performance are fixed when you buy the console. Storage is the practical upgrade: a larger, compatible SSD lets you keep more games installed and preserves the fast data path required by current-generation titles, but it does not universally raise frame rates.
Choose an internal M.2 SSD for a PS5 or an approved Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S when you want more immediately playable current-generation games. Use external USB storage mainly for archiving and moving games. If your problem is low FPS, upgrading storage is unlikely to solve it; the game’s performance mode, console hardware and software updates matter more.

The quick answer: upgrade storage, not RAM
Console RAM and console storage solve different problems. RAM is the fast working area shared by the game, operating system and graphics workload. Storage is the long-term space where installed games, saves and downloadable content reside. More RAM can let a system keep more data readily available, while faster storage can feed assets to the system with fewer waits. On a console, however, those two parts are not equally upgradeable.
| What you want to improve | Upgrade that can help | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| More games installed at once | Larger internal or approved expansion storage | Fewer deletions, reinstalls and transfers |
| Long waits while a game loads or streams assets | Storage that meets the console’s required high-speed interface | Maintains the data-delivery path designed for the game; no universal time saving is guaranteed |
| Higher or steadier frame rates | Usually a different console, a game performance mode or a software fix | An SSD alone does not add CPU, GPU or RAM capability |
| More working memory for games | No normal consumer RAM upgrade on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S | RAM capacity and bandwidth are purchase-time specifications |
| Keeping a large library cheaply | External USB drive, subject to platform rules | Useful for storage and transfers; current-generation games may need to be moved before play |
The practical decision is therefore straightforward: buy the console with the memory tier and graphics performance you need, then expand storage when capacity becomes the constraint. Do not buy a larger drive expecting it to unlock a higher FPS setting.

What console RAM does
RAM is the console’s active workspace
When a game runs, RAM holds code, textures, geometry, animation data, audio buffers, operating-system services and other information that must be available quickly. Graphics workloads also use this shared pool. Capacity determines how much data can remain resident, while bandwidth determines how quickly the system can move data between memory and the CPU or GPU.
Those characteristics are engineered as part of the console platform. They are not a removable DIMM that a player can replace later. The memory controller, bus width, cooling design, operating-system allocation and game-development targets are all built around the original specification. A desktop-style RAM upgrade path would require hardware and firmware support that these consoles do not provide.
Xbox Series X illustrates the fixed design
Microsoft lists Xbox Series X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 320-bit-wide bus. Its specification divides bandwidth into 10GB at 560GB/s and 6GB at 336GB/s. These figures are part of the console’s fixed architecture, not a user-selectable memory tier. Microsoft’s specification page does not present a consumer RAM-upgrade path.

The split bandwidth is an engineering detail, not a setting that can be changed by installing a drive. Developers target the available memory and bandwidth when they build a Series X|S game. If a title offers a 30-fps quality mode and a 60-fps performance mode, the choice reflects how that particular game balances resolution, effects, CPU simulation and GPU workload within the console’s fixed limits.
Why more RAM would not automatically mean more FPS
Frame rate is the number of complete images the console can calculate and display each second. A frame can be limited by CPU work such as physics, artificial intelligence and world simulation; GPU work such as shading, lighting and resolution; memory bandwidth; or the game engine itself. Additional capacity would not remove a CPU or GPU bottleneck, and storage capacity would not remove one either.
Because the RAM is fixed, the useful comparison happens before purchase: choose the console model whose CPU, GPU and memory design match the games and frame-rate targets you want. After purchase, software patches and the game’s own graphics modes are the realistic ways to change performance.

What storage does
Capacity and speed are separate properties
Storage capacity answers “How many games can I keep installed?” Storage speed and the console’s I/O path answer “How quickly can the system deliver the data a game requests?” A larger drive can be slow; a smaller drive can be fast. Capacity alone does not make a drive an FPS upgrade.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Current-generation games are designed around rapid streaming of textures, geometry and other assets. An internal SSD, or an expansion device that matches the platform’s required performance, preserves that intended path. It can prevent storage from becoming the reason a game must pause while data arrives, but the game still has to be coded to use the available I/O system efficiently.
Why there is no universal load-time promise
Load behavior varies with the game engine, scene complexity, patch level, save state, compression, background tasks and the specific console model. The official specifications cited for these platforms do not publish one universal number of seconds or a fixed percentage that every compatible SSD will save. Treat claims of a guaranteed improvement across all games with caution.
Storage expansion can still improve the ownership experience substantially. More room means fewer uninstall-and-reinstall cycles, fewer downloads after a console reset and less time shuffling games between drives. Those benefits are real even when the frame counter is unchanged.
PlayStation 5: the upgrade path
Internal M.2 SSD for playable PS5 games
Sony Interactive Entertainment says PS5 owners can install a compatible internal M.2 SSD and expand capacity by up to 8TB. This is the relevant route when you want additional PS5 games to remain installed and immediately playable. The SSD must meet Sony’s current interface, performance, capacity and physical-fit requirements for your console and firmware.

A documented manufacturer example is the WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5. Western Digital describes it as officially licensed, with read and write performance above Sony’s minimum requirements and a heatsink designed for PS5 airflow. “Officially licensed” does not eliminate the need to check the current Sony requirements: console revision, firmware, capacity and heatsink dimensions still matter.

How to plan and install the internal drive
- Confirm the console and software. Identify your PS5 model and install the latest system software available to you. Read Sony’s current M.2 compatibility requirements rather than relying only on a retailer’s “PS5-ready” label.
- Check the complete specification. Verify the SSD’s interface, sustained read performance, capacity and heatsink dimensions. The drive must fit the expansion bay with its heatsink installed; a bare module that meets speed requirements can still be physically unsuitable.
- Prepare the console safely. Shut down the PS5 completely, disconnect its cables and follow Sony’s hardware manual for removing the cover and opening the expansion bay. Do not force the cover or operate the console with the bay cover missing.
- Install the module. Seat the M.2 SSD in the bay, secure it with the supplied spacer and screw, and refit the bay cover and console cover exactly as Sony specifies.
- Format when prompted. On the first boot, the PS5 should offer to format a newly detected compatible drive. Formatting erases that drive, so confirm it contains no data you need before accepting.
- Verify storage management. Check the console’s storage settings to confirm the capacity is recognised. Set the preferred installation location if the system offers that option, then move or reinstall games as needed.
The internal M.2 route is not a way to change the PS5’s memory bandwidth or graphics settings. It supplies additional high-speed space so the console can keep more compatible games on the same fast path as its built-in storage.
External USB storage on PS5
Sony also supports external USB drives for storing PS5 and PS4 content. This is useful when you need inexpensive capacity, a backup location or a place to archive games that you are not currently playing. The important distinction is playability: an external USB drive can store PS5 games, but a PS5 title generally must be copied back to the internal SSD or compatible M.2 SSD before it can run. PS4 games can be played from supported external USB storage under Sony’s rules.
Use external storage as a library-management tool, not as a substitute for the PS5’s high-speed expansion path. Before buying, check Sony’s current USB capacity, connection and compatibility requirements for your model.
Xbox Series X|S: the upgrade path
Internal SSD performance is part of the platform
Microsoft lists Xbox Series X with a custom NVMe SSD and 2.4GB/s raw I/O throughput, rising to 4.8GB/s compressed through the console’s hardware decompression system. Those figures describe the internal storage path used by the Xbox Velocity Architecture. They are not frame-rate figures and do not describe the console’s RAM bandwidth.
For Series X|S games, Microsoft’s approved Storage Expansion Cards are designed to match the internal storage’s performance. Xbox Wire explained that the card was designed to provide “the exact same consistent, sustained performance as your internal SSD,” so the gameplay experience is intended to be the same regardless of which of those two locations holds the game.
Installing and using a Storage Expansion Card
- Identify the console. Confirm whether you have an Xbox Series X or Series S and choose a Storage Expansion Card explicitly made for Xbox Series X|S.
- Check capacity and current compatibility. Confirm the card’s capacity, packaging and warranty, and make sure the console is running current system software.
- Insert the card in the expansion port. Follow the card and console instructions for insertion. Do not use a generic NVMe module in place of the approved expansion format.
- Verify detection. Open the console’s storage-management screen and confirm that the card appears with its usable capacity.
- Move or install games. Series-optimized games can remain on the internal SSD or the approved card. Use the storage-management controls to move titles when you need to free internal space.
A Storage Expansion Card adds capacity while preserving the performance class expected by Series X|S games. It still does not add RAM, CPU cores or GPU compute units, so it should not be marketed as a universal FPS upgrade.

External USB drives on Xbox
An external USB 3.1 hard drive is a practical capacity and archive option. It can hold games and reduce the need to redownload them, but it is not the same as an approved Storage Expansion Card. A Series-optimized title may need to be moved to the internal SSD or approved card before it can be played. Older backward-compatible titles may have different storage rules.
The transfer step is the trade-off for choosing cheaper or larger USB capacity. If you regularly switch among several Series-optimized games, the time spent moving them can outweigh the initial savings compared with a Storage Expansion Card.
RAM versus storage: the performance differences
| Comparison point | Console RAM | Internal or approved high-speed storage | External USB storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Holds active game, system and graphics data | Feeds installed-game data through the platform’s fast I/O path | Stores and transfers a library |
| Can a player upgrade it? | No normal user upgrade on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S | PS5: compatible internal M.2 SSD; Xbox: approved Storage Expansion Card | USB drive can be added, subject to platform rules |
| Effect on FPS | Fixed by the console design; not changed after purchase | No universal FPS increase | No universal FPS increase |
| Effect on capacity | None | Large increase in installed-game space | Large increase in archive and transfer space |
| Current-generation playability | Not applicable | Designed for direct play | Often requires moving a current-generation title before play |
| Main buying risk | Choosing a console whose fixed hardware does not meet your goals | Wrong interface, speed, capacity or physical fit | Assuming archive storage has the same performance as internal storage |
Use the symptom to choose the upgrade
Your games run at a low or unstable frame rate
First check whether the game has a performance or quality mode and whether the latest patch is installed. A storage purchase is unlikely to change a CPU-limited simulation, a GPU-limited scene or a developer-selected 30-fps cap. If the title is consistently beyond the console’s hardware target, only a different hardware tier or a game update can materially change that ceiling.
The console says it is full
Choose more storage. On PS5, install a compatible internal M.2 SSD when you want additional PS5 games ready to launch. On Xbox Series X|S, choose an approved Storage Expansion Card for the internal-SSD experience. An external USB drive can provide more archive space if you are comfortable moving current-generation games before playing them.
Games take a long time to load or stream assets
Check where the game is installed. A current-generation title on the platform’s internal storage or approved high-speed expansion is using the intended I/O class. If it is on an external USB drive, move it to the required high-speed location when the platform allows. Do not assume that replacing one compatible internal SSD with a faster-rated model will produce a predictable improvement; game and system bottlenecks vary.

Capacity is the problem, not RAM. A larger drive reduces management work and preserves your installed patches and local content. Compare the cost and convenience of a high-speed expansion device with a cheaper USB archive drive based on how often you play current-generation titles.

You want a future-proof console
Make the RAM, CPU and GPU decision at purchase time because those parts are not normal upgrades. Then leave an expansion budget for storage. This order prevents a common mistake: buying a console with the wrong performance tier and trying to compensate with a larger SSD.
Compatibility checklist before buying storage
- Console model: Confirm PS5 versus Xbox Series X|S, and check the exact revision where the manufacturer distinguishes models.
- Connection type: PS5 requires a compatible internal M.2 SSD for direct expansion; Xbox Series X|S requires its approved expansion-card format for internal-SSD-class performance.
- Firmware: Install current system software and read the manufacturer’s latest requirements before purchase.
- Capacity limit: PS5’s documented internal M.2 expansion limit is up to 8TB. Do not assume every larger device will be accepted.
- Sustained performance: Check the manufacturer’s required read-performance class, not only a peak burst number printed on a retail box.
- Physical fit and cooling: For a PS5 M.2 drive, verify the complete height and length with the heatsink installed so it fits the expansion bay and airflow design.
- Playability rules: Confirm whether the games you own can run directly from an external USB drive or must be moved to internal or approved expansion storage.
- Data safety: Back up saves and important files before formatting or moving a large library. Formatting a new drive erases its contents.
Common misconceptions
“More storage is the same as more memory”
No. RAM is volatile working memory used while the game is running. Storage is persistent space that retains data when the console is off. A 2TB SSD does not give the console 2TB of RAM, and it does not alter the console’s memory bandwidth.
“Any SSD will increase FPS”
No. A compatible SSD can keep asset delivery from being the limiting factor, but frame rate is primarily governed by the fixed CPU, GPU and RAM design plus the game’s own engine and graphics modes. There is no platform-wide FPS multiplier for installing a larger or faster drive.
“An external USB drive is equivalent to the internal SSD”
No. External USB storage is excellent for capacity and archiving, but current-generation games can have stricter playability requirements. Xbox Series X|S approved expansion cards are specifically designed to match internal SSD performance; generic USB storage is not. PS5 distinguishes between storing a PS5 game on USB and playing it directly from the console’s high-speed storage.
“A licensed or advertised drive is automatically compatible”
Marketing language is not a substitute for checking the current console requirements. Verify the model, firmware, interface, sustained performance, capacity and physical dimensions. Requirements can change with hardware revisions and system software.
Bottom line for PS5 and Xbox owners
Console RAM is a fixed purchase-time specification. Storage is the upgrade you can realistically make, but its benefits are capacity, library management and maintaining the fast asset-streaming path—not a guaranteed increase in FPS. For PS5, a compatible internal M.2 SSD supports up to 8TB of added capacity, while an external USB drive is mainly for storage and transfers. For Xbox Series X|S, an approved Storage Expansion Card is designed to deliver the same sustained performance as the internal SSD; an external USB 3.1 HDD is better treated as an archive.
Choose expansion storage according to where you need games to run and how much transfer time you will tolerate. Choose the console’s RAM and graphics capability before you buy, because those are the parts a later drive cannot change.
