1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClaude does not contain a market-data feed by itself. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the connection layer: a remote connector or local MCP server exposes tools, and a financial-data provider supplies the quotes, fundamentals, news, timestamps, entitlements, and usage limits. To connect them, choose a remote connector in Claude settings, install a local server in Claude Desktop, or build and host a custom server backed by the API you are licensed to use.
The most important qualification is the phrase “real-time.” MCP cannot make delayed or restricted data live. Verify the provider’s timestamp, exchange coverage, latency, account entitlements, rate limits, and redistribution rights before relying on an answer for analysis or a trading decision.

What MCP contributes—and what it does not
Anthropic defines the Model Context Protocol as “an open standard, created by Anthropic, for AI applications to connect to tools and data.” Read the protocol overview at Anthropic’s MCP documentation.
In a market-data workflow, MCP normally sits between Claude and an external service:
#1 Best Overall
- Claude: interprets your request and decides which enabled tool may help.
- MCP server: describes tools and passes approved requests and responses between Claude and the provider.
- Data provider: returns quotes, candles, fundamentals, filings, estimates, news, foreign-exchange data, or other supported datasets under its own commercial and technical rules.
MCP therefore does not guarantee exchange-grade latency, accuracy, completeness, a particular exchange’s feed, or permission to redistribute data. Those properties belong to the provider agreement and the account behind the server. A connector can also expose actions in addition to read-only data, so treat every server as access to an external service rather than as a harmless plug-in.
Choose the connection route that fits your setup
Remote connector in Claude
A remote MCP connector is hosted at a URL that Anthropic’s cloud service can reach. You add that URL through Claude’s connector settings, then authenticate as the provider requires. This is the simplest route when a vendor already operates a compatible server.
Anthropic’s current support material says custom remote connectors are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans; plan eligibility and labels can change, so confirm the live documentation before you roll out a workspace. Team and Enterprise workspaces may require an owner to enable or configure the connector. See Anthropic’s remote MCP connector guidance and the Claude setup instructions.
- Sign in to Claude and open Settings.
- Open Connectors (the exact navigation label can change with the current Claude interface).
- Choose the option to add a custom or remote connector.
- Paste the provider’s MCP URL exactly as supplied. Do not substitute a URL that points only to a computer on your private network.
- Select Connect or the equivalent action, then complete the provider’s OAuth or API-key flow.
- Review the tools the connector requests. Enable only the market-data functions you need, and decline or disable tools that can place orders, write records, or perform unrelated actions.
- Open a new conversation and ask Claude to identify the connected data source, the instrument, the exchange, the observation timestamp, and whether the value is delayed.
A remote connector must be reachable by Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure. A server bound to localhost, a private laptop, or an intranet address will not work through this route unless your organization publishes it through an approved, secured deployment. For private deployments, follow the current network and IP-allowlisting instructions in Anthropic’s documentation and your organization’s security policy.
Local MCP server in Claude Desktop
Use a local server when the integration must run on your computer or when the provider’s software is designed for local execution. Claude Desktop supports local MCP servers, and desktop extensions can simplify installation and configuration. The current local-server guide is at Claude’s local MCP server documentation.
Rank #2
- Install or update Claude Desktop from your organization’s approved source.
- Install the provider’s MCP server or desktop extension according to that provider’s instructions.
- Open Claude Desktop’s Extensions or Connectors area and locate the installed server.
- Enter the API key, account token, or environment settings requested by the provider. Keep secrets out of chat messages and source-control repositories.
- Check the connection status and the list of exposed tools.
- Start a conversation that asks for the server name, data source, timestamp, and delayed-versus-real-time status before requesting analysis.
A local server can reach services on your machine or private network, but it also inherits the security of that machine. Limit the account’s permissions, keep the server and dependencies updated, and stop or remove it when the project ends.
Custom MCP server backed by a financial API
If no ready-made connector covers your instruments, region, or entitlement, build or host an MCP server that wraps the financial-data API you are licensed to use. Anthropic documents the integration pattern in its remote MCP server documentation. There is no single universal vendor API or universal code recipe: authentication, endpoints, response schemas, streaming behavior, and licensing are provider-specific.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A production design normally includes:
- Narrow tools: separate read-only functions such as quote, historical bars, fundamentals, filings, and news rather than exposing an unrestricted HTTP client.
- Input validation: normalize ticker symbols, exchange codes, date ranges, intervals, and currencies before making a provider request.
- Timestamp preservation: return the provider’s observation time, timezone, publication time, and delayed flag without silently converting them into “now.”
- Credential isolation: keep API keys on the server, scope them to the smallest permitted dataset, and rotate them through your normal secret-management process.
- Rate-limit handling: pass back a clear retry time or quota error instead of returning an empty value that Claude may misinterpret.
- Auditability: log tool name, normalized instrument, request time, provider response time, and error class while excluding secrets and unnecessary personal data.
Before calling the output real-time, establish the provider’s exchange entitlements, redistribution terms, permitted users, request limits, historical depth, and service-level expectations. MCP connects the model to your server; it does not grant rights that your data contract does not include.
Ready-made finance connectors you may encounter
The Claude Marketplace financial-services listings currently include several options. Marketplace presence is not proof of a particular latency, exchange entitlement, API limit, price, or redistribution right. Confirm those details for your account before enabling a connector.
| Connector or integration | What the published description indicates | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha Vantage MCP Server | Coverage is described across stocks, options, fundamentals, earnings, SEC filings, indices, news, exchange rates, commodities, and other trading signals. | Exact exchanges and instruments, timestamp and latency, delayed versus real-time access, request limits, account price, and permitted use. |
| FactSet | Anthropic describes a finance connector with real-time market data, fundamental analysis, earnings estimates, and research insights. | Whether your organization has the required FactSet license, which datasets are enabled, and the current installation and authentication path. See Anthropic’s finance connector description. |
| Morningstar | Listed for up-to-date investment and market insights. | Coverage, update frequency, regional availability, entitlements, historical depth, and use or redistribution restrictions. |
| FMP | Listed as comprehensive financial market data. | The specific endpoints, exchange coverage, latency, limits, account tier, and licensing terms available to you. |
| LSEG and S&P Global | Anthropic identifies partner-developed finance plugins and separately describes S&P Global financial-data integration. | The current product path, availability in your workspace, required commercial agreement, and the datasets exposed by the present connector. |
Do not rank these providers from the listing names alone. A connector that is excellent for U.S. equities may be unsuitable for options, futures, foreign exchanges, corporate actions, or a compliance-controlled research workflow.
How to test whether “real-time” is real for your account
Run this verification before using Claude’s answer in a report, alert, or investment decision:
Recommended Free Tools
- Request metadata first. Ask the tool for the instrument identifier, exchange, currency, observation timestamp, publication timestamp, timezone, and delayed flag.
- Check the entitlement. Confirm that the account includes the exchange and dataset, rather than assuming that a connector’s general description applies to your subscription.
- Compare a known event. During a session, compare the returned timestamp with the provider’s own dashboard or a permitted reference. This is a sanity check, not proof of exchange-grade performance.
- Inspect limits. Record requests-per-minute, daily quotas, burst behavior, and whether a failed request consumes quota.
- Check history and adjustments. Ask whether prices are split- or dividend-adjusted and how far back the endpoint goes.
- Confirm rights. Read the provider agreement for internal use, client reports, redistribution, storage, and display restrictions.
Use wording such as “the provider reports a quote timestamped at 14:32:10 UTC” rather than claiming that Claude itself is receiving an exchange feed. If a tool omits timestamp or delay metadata, treat the value as unverified and ask the provider for clarification.
Evaluate a connector before adopting it
| Question | Why it matters | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Which instruments and venues are covered? | A stock endpoint may not include options, futures, funds, cryptoassets, or your local exchange. | Instrument list, exchange codes, corporate-action policy. |
| What does “real-time” mean? | Some accounts receive streaming data, others receive snapshots or delayed values. | Delay interval, timestamp semantics, update frequency, outage policy. |
| How deep is the history? | Backtests and trend analysis need more than the latest quote. | Earliest date, bar intervals, adjustment method, retention period. |
| How does authentication work? | OAuth, personal keys, service accounts, and workspace credentials have different risks. | Rotation process, scopes, storage location, revocation procedure. |
| What are the limits and costs? | Claude may make several tool calls for one question, consuming quota faster than a manual lookup. | Per-minute and daily limits, overage behavior, account fees. |
| Can you store or redistribute results? | Market-data contracts often restrict client reports, public dashboards, or long-term storage. | Contract language and compliance approval. |
| Where does the server run? | Remote hosting sends requests through the vendor and Anthropic’s cloud path; local hosting keeps execution on your device. | Network route, logging locations, data-residency requirements. |
Secure the connector and the conversation
Anthropic warns that custom connectors may link Claude to services it has not verified and may permit access or actions. Apply these controls:
- Add servers only from organizations you trust and whose endpoint you can authenticate.
- Read the tool descriptions and enable only the functions required for market-data retrieval.
- Review each proposed tool call, especially calls that write data, send messages, change account state, or place orders.
- Use a read-only provider key whenever possible. If one credential can access multiple datasets or actions, assume a compromise could expose all of them.
- Do not paste secrets into prompts, documents, issue trackers, or model-visible logs.
- Separate development and production credentials and rotate keys after staff, vendors, or projects change.
- Keep a human approval step for any workflow that could trigger a trade or other consequential action.
These practices follow the risks described in Anthropic’s remote connector guidance. MCP is a tool interface, not a security boundary by itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A reliable first conversation
After the connector reports as connected, start with a provenance request rather than immediately asking for a forecast:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Identify the connected market-data provider. For the requested instrument, return the exchange, currency, observation timestamp, timezone, delayed or real-time status, and the source tool name. If any field is unavailable, say so.
Then make the analytical request explicit:
Using only the returned data, calculate the five-session percentage change. Show the observations and timestamps, state any missing sessions or adjustments, and do not fill gaps with estimates.
Ask Claude to cite the tool result inside the conversation and to separate retrieved facts from interpretation. If the answer contains a price without a timestamp, currency, or source tool, ask again before using it.
Troubleshoot common failures
The connector does not appear
Check that you are using a Claude plan and workspace where custom connectors are enabled. In Team or Enterprise, ask the workspace owner to confirm the setting. Refresh the settings page and verify that the connector URL is complete and uses the provider’s current endpoint.
Authentication succeeds but no data is returned
Confirm that the key has the requested dataset and exchange entitlement. Check symbol format, exchange suffix, date range, and quota. A valid login can still produce an authorization or subscription error for a particular endpoint.
The quote looks stale
Inspect the provider’s timestamp and delay flag. Check whether the connector returns end-of-day, snapshot, or streaming data, and whether the market is open in the relevant timezone. Do not label an undocumented value real-time.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A remote server is unreachable
Anthropic’s cloud service must be able to resolve and reach the endpoint. A private hostname, firewall, expired TLS certificate, IP restriction, or local-only server can all prevent connection. Review the provider’s server logs and the network allowlisting guidance before changing firewall rules.
Best Value
You hit a rate limit
Reduce date ranges and batch requests where the provider permits it. Ask Claude for one symbol or interval at a time, wait for the stated retry window, and monitor daily quotas. Do not respond to a quota error by silently switching to an unverified data source.
Claude uses the wrong tool
Disable overlapping tools, narrow the server’s tool descriptions, and state the required provider and dataset in the prompt. Review the proposed call before approving it. If the server exposes action tools that are unnecessary for analysis, remove or disable them.
What this setup can and cannot promise
With a properly configured connector, Claude can retrieve current provider data during a conversation and explain it in natural language. It can help summarize filings, compare timestamped prices, calculate changes, or organize a research workflow.
It cannot turn a delayed entitlement into a live feed, waive exchange licensing, guarantee that a provider’s value is correct, or make an investment decision suitable for every user. Keep the provider’s terms, timestamp, and entitlement attached to any output that leaves the chat. For broader finance integrations and partner examples, see Anthropic’s finance-agents announcement.
