Together they cover the work and personal information you search, music you play, messages you send, and smart-home actions you perform. Gemini can use each connection for different tasks, but availability and commands depend on your account, device, location, language, and Gemini client. Check Google’s current availability table before assuming an integration is enabled.
What connecting apps to Gemini actually does
A connected app gives Gemini permission to perform supported actions with information in that service. It is different from Gemini answering a general question with public web information. Google says Gemini can automatically use public information from services such as Search, Flights, Hotels, Maps, and YouTube; personal content requires permission through a connected app.

The four recommendations below are an editorial starting point, not a complete catalog. Google’s connected-app list and available actions change by account type, age eligibility, region, language, device, and whether you are using Gemini on the web, Android, iOS, Chrome, or another client. The same app may expose more actions in one context than another.
| App | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace | Search and summarize Gmail, Drive, and Docs; manage Calendar, Tasks, and Keep | Requires the same Google account, Keep Activity, and sometimes administrator approval |
| Spotify | Find and play music | Keep expectations to playback; supported actions can vary by client |
| Send messages and make calls from Gemini | Google documents these actions for Android; do not assume iOS support | |
| Google Home | Manage compatible smart-home devices | Device compatibility and controls depend on your Google Home setup |
For the detailed list of supported actions and platform requirements, consult Google’s Connected Apps help page and the separate availability and requirements table.

1. Google Workspace is the highest-value connection
Workspace is the strongest everyday productivity integration because one connection can span Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Tasks, and Keep. Instead of opening several apps to reconstruct context, you can ask Gemini to find information, summarize it, and turn it into a next action.
What Gemini can do with Workspace
- Search and summarize recent Gmail messages.
- Locate information or a document in Drive and Docs.
- Create, retrieve, or edit Google Tasks and reminders.
- Create and retrieve Keep notes and lists.
- Create or manage Calendar events.
Google’s Workspace documentation describes examples such as summarizing recent email, finding a document, turning a plan into a task list, saving recipe ingredients in Keep, and adding a trip mentioned in an email to Calendar. These are useful because they connect information gathering with a concrete follow-up action.
Prerequisites and setup
- Sign in to Gemini with the same Google account you use for Workspace.
- Turn on Keep Activity. Without it, the Workspace connection will not work as described.
- If the account belongs to a company or school, check whether an administrator has enabled connected apps for your Workspace edition.
- Open Gemini and select Settings and help > Connected Apps. Some accounts show Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps instead.
- Select Google Workspace and follow the authorization prompts.
In a new Workspace conversation, explicitly tell Gemini to use Workspace or name the service you need—for example, “Use Gmail to summarize messages from my project team” or “Find the budget document in Drive.” Once Gemini has used Workspace in that chat, follow-up questions in the same conversation do not need to repeat the instruction. The exact supported actions and limitations are listed in Google’s Workspace connection guide.

Practical automation patterns
- Morning triage: Ask for a summary of recent, unread project email, then request a task list for items that require your response.
- Meeting preparation: Ask Gemini to locate the relevant Drive document and identify the Calendar event details. Verify the result before sharing it.
- Personal planning: Ask Gemini to extract ingredients from a recipe in an email or document and save them as a Keep list.
- Travel follow-up: Ask it to identify a trip mentioned in an email and draft a Calendar event with the date, location, and notes.
2. Spotify turns Gemini into a hands-free music controller
Google’s Connected Apps overview names Spotify as an example of a streaming service Gemini can use to find and play music. This is most useful when you want playback without switching apps—during a commute, while cooking, or when you are already using voice controls.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
How to use the connection
- Go to Settings and help > Connected Apps (or Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps).
- Select Spotify if it appears for your account and client, then complete the sign-in and permission flow.
- Ask Gemini directly for playback, such as “Play my workout music on Spotify” or “Find acoustic jazz on Spotify.” You can also type
@and choose the app when the picker appears.
The documented use is finding and playing music. Do not assume that every Gemini client can create, edit, or manage playlists, queue tracks, or change account settings. If Gemini cannot complete a request, open Spotify and perform that action there rather than treating the failure as an account problem.
3. WhatsApp adds Android messaging and calling
Google lists WhatsApp for making calls and sending messages through Gemini on Android devices. That makes it the most direct way in this set to turn a spoken or typed instruction into communication, especially when your hands are occupied.
What is supported
- Send a WhatsApp message through Gemini.
- Initiate a WhatsApp call through Gemini.
The Android qualification matters. The general connected-app feature set is not identical across Android, iOS, the web, and other Gemini clients. If WhatsApp does not appear in your Connected Apps list, or Gemini offers only a different messaging route, the limitation may be platform or account eligibility rather than a setup error.

Safer message workflow
- Connect WhatsApp from Settings and help > Connected Apps.
- Ask Gemini to contact a specific person and state the intended message clearly.
- Review the recipient and wording before sending, particularly when names are similar or the message contains dates, money, addresses, or confidential information.
- For a call, confirm the contact before Gemini starts it.
Use short, unambiguous instructions such as “Send Alex a WhatsApp message saying I will arrive at 6 p.m.” Avoid relying on Gemini to infer which Alex or which time zone you mean.

4. Google Home connects Gemini with smart-home control
Google’s overview says Gemini can manage smart-home devices in Google Home. If you already have compatible devices configured in Google Home, this can create a natural voice or chat workflow for lights, thermostats, plugs, and other supported categories.
Connecting and testing Google Home
- Open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings.
- Choose Google Home when it is offered for your account and client.
- Complete the permission and account-selection prompts.
- Test one low-risk command, such as asking Gemini to turn a light on or off.
The source documentation does not identify a particular device model that everyone must buy. Compatibility depends on the devices already linked to your Google Home account, their room assignments, and the controls exposed to Gemini. A device that works in the Google Home app may not support every natural-language command through Gemini.
Use precise home commands
- Name the room or device: “Turn off the kitchen lights,” rather than “Turn everything off.”
- For temperature changes, include the target and room where relevant.
- After a consequential command—such as unlocking, opening, or changing a security-related setting—check the Google Home app or the physical device.
How to connect any of the four apps
- Open Gemini settings: Select Settings and help > Connected Apps. On some accounts the route is Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps.
- Check the list: Only apps eligible for your account, region, language, device, and Gemini client are shown.
- Select an app: Follow the sign-in, account-selection, and permission prompts.
- Invoke it in chat: Type
@and choose the app, or name the service directly in your request. - Test a narrow action: Start with a simple search, playback request, message draft, or light command before attempting a multi-step workflow.
- Disconnect when needed: Return to Connected Apps settings and remove access if you no longer want Gemini to use that service.
Eligibility, account, and platform caveats
Google’s availability table is the authority for current requirements. It covers account type, supported regions and languages, age or account eligibility, and supported clients. Workspace is listed for personal, work, or school Google Accounts in supported configurations, with web and mobile support and Gemini in Chrome. Third-party apps can have narrower requirements.
Keep Activity is a particularly important switch. Google says that when Keep Activity is off, connected apps are unavailable on the web, iOS, and smart watches; on Android, only Device assistance, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp remain available. Work and school users may also be restricted by their Workspace edition or administrator policy.
If an app is missing, first check the availability table, then confirm you are signed into the intended Google account, using a supported client and language. Do not assume that reinstalling an app will add an integration that Google has not enabled for your account.

Connected apps can expose meaningful personal context. Google’s personalization documentation says connected data may include saved Search and YouTube data, email, files, events, photos, videos, contact details, payment information, and location information. Some of that information can concern sensitive topics.
Before connecting an app, decide whether the convenience justifies giving Gemini access to that category of data. You can connect only the services you expect to use and disconnect them later in settings. Avoid connecting a work account on a shared or unmanaged device unless your organization’s policy allows it.

A connected-app permission is what enables those personal actions.

Accuracy and failure handling
Google warns that “Gemini Apps can hallucinate responses or provide outdated information, such as from an older email when there’s a more recent one.” Treat every connected-app result as an assistant’s interpretation, not an authoritative record.
- Review the sources Gemini lists, especially for email summaries and document details.
- Open the original Gmail message, Drive file, Calendar event, or Keep note before acting on important information.
- Confirm recipients, dates, amounts, locations, and device names before sending or changing anything.
- If Gemini cannot perform an action, use the native app and check whether the requested action is actually documented for your platform.
For high-consequence decisions—financial commitments, work approvals, travel changes, security controls, or medical information—verify in the source app even when Gemini produces a confident answer.
Which connection should you enable first?
Choose Google Workspace first if your day revolves around email, documents, meetings, notes, or reminders. Add Spotify if hands-free playback is a daily convenience. Add WhatsApp if you use Android and regularly send messages or make calls. Add Google Home if you already operate compatible devices through Google Home and want conversational control.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no need to enable all four. The practical approach is to connect one service, test the exact actions you need, and keep only the permissions that provide enough value to justify the personal context they expose.
