Windows 365 Frontline is now called Windows 365 Flex. To stop forgotten sessions from consuming shared Cloud PC capacity, create an Intune Settings catalog profile for Windows 10 and later, configure the Remote Desktop Services session-time-limit settings, and assign the profile only to the intended Cloud PC groups. Configure both the active-but-idle limit and, when rapid capacity recovery is required, a separate disconnected-session limit.
Microsoft may still display “Frontline” in older documentation, screenshots, and parts of the Intune admin center while the renaming is completed. The procedure below applies to the current Flex service and explains the older terminology.
Why session time limits matter on shared Cloud PCs
A user who closes a laptop lid, abandons a browser tab, or simply walks away may leave a Remote Desktop Services session connected. On a shared or shift-based Cloud PC, that session can keep capacity unavailable to the next worker and leave company data exposed on an unattended desktop. Microsoft describes time limits as a way to prevent inactive users retaining shared access and to protect data.
These states are operationally different:
- Sign out: Windows ends the user session and closes applications.
- Disconnect: The connection ends, but the session and its applications can remain running.
- Active but idle: The session is still connected but has received no keyboard or mouse input for the configured interval.
- Disconnected session ending: A separate timer eventually terminates a session that has already been disconnected.
An idle policy normally disconnects; it does not necessarily return the Cloud PC to the shared pool immediately. Users should save work and sign out explicitly at the end of every shift.

Frontline is now Windows 365 Flex
Use Windows 365 Flex, formerly Windows 365 Frontline, when referring to the current product. Older HTMD articles and Microsoft pages may use Frontline, and your tenant can temporarily expose that label. The Settings Catalog controls are Windows Remote Desktop Services policies, so scope assignments carefully: an incorrectly targeted profile could affect managed physical Windows devices as well as Cloud PCs.

Choose the right session policy
Active but idle session limit
Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions disconnects a connected Remote Desktop Services session after the selected period without user input. The documented Windows policy behavior displays a warning two minutes before disconnection; moving the mouse or pressing a key during that warning can keep the session active. The setting does not apply to a local console session.

Disconnected-session limit
Set time limit for disconnected sessions controls how long a disconnected session remains before Windows ends it. Configure this separately when the business objective is to make a shared Cloud PC available promptly. Applications can remain open between the initial disconnect and this second limit.
Therefore, “disconnect,” “sign out,” and “end session” are not interchangeable. Test the resulting behavior against licensing, security, application-recovery, and data-retention requirements. Microsoft documents both categories in its session-time-limit guidance.
Configure the active-idle policy in Intune
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Open Devices, then Configuration or Configuration profiles (the label depends on the portal revision).
- Select Create or Create profile.
- Choose Windows 10 and later for Platform, and Settings catalog for Profile type. Select Create.
- Give the profile a descriptive name, such as
Windows 365 Flex - Active Idle Session Timeout, and select Next. - On Configuration settings, select Add settings and search for
session time limits. - Browse to Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Session Time Limits.
- Select Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions (older catalogs may say Set your idle but active session limit for Remote Desktop Services sessions).
- Enable the administrative-template setting and set Idle session limit (Device) to the approved duration.
- Optionally add Set time limit for disconnected sessions from the same category and configure its duration.
- Add scope tags if your tenant uses role-based administrative boundaries, then select Next.
- Assign the profile to the intended Flex/Frontline Cloud PC device or user groups. Review filters and exclusions so physical Windows devices are not unintentionally included.
- Review the configuration and select Create.
Catalog wording can vary by language, portal revision, and policy metadata. Searching for session time limits and browsing the category is more reliable than copying an older screenshot label. The original procedure is illustrated by HTMD’s Intune walkthrough.
Configure the disconnected-session limit
Add the disconnected setting to the same profile or create a separate profile for easier assignment and change control. Use the separate setting when an idle disconnect alone leaves applications running longer than your shared-capacity or security requirements allow. Choose a duration long enough for brief network interruptions but short enough to recover capacity predictably.

Choose a timeout for the work pattern
There is no universal Microsoft-mandated value. Consider shift length, legitimate periods without input, application tolerance for reconnects, unsaved-work risk, pool size, security obligations, and the client used (Windows App, browser, thin client, or mobile device). The following are practical starting points, not requirements:

Microsoft documents built-in Flex Shared behavior of 15 minutes for idle sessions and 30 minutes for disconnected sessions. Verify how those defaults interact with your tenant’s mode and Intune assignments before standardizing a value.
Flex Shared and Flex Dedicated behave differently
Flex Shared
Shared mode is non-persistent. Microsoft states that the user profile is deleted at sign-out, the roaming-profile cache is cleared, and user files and settings are not retained on the Cloud PC. Use OneDrive Known Folder Move or another approved persistent location for files that must survive the session. Do not assume reconnecting restores unsaved work. Microsoft documents the 15-minute idle and 30-minute disconnected defaults in Managing Windows 365 Flex.
Flex Dedicated
Dedicated users may reasonably expect applications and sessions to remain available longer. Microsoft’s management guidance says inactive Dedicated-mode Flex Cloud PCs can be powered off and recommends configuring a time limit for idle Remote Desktop sessions. Do not copy a Shared-mode timeout into Dedicated mode without testing the user workflow and power-management objectives.

Monitor deployment in Intune
- Open the configuration profile after assignment.
- Review device and user check-in status, including succeeded, pending, error, conflict, and not-applicable states.
- Confirm the target Cloud PCs are members of the intended group or match the assignment filter.
- Trigger an Intune sync on a test Cloud PC when immediate validation is needed.
- Use the profile’s View report area to investigate failures.
Run a controlled end-user test
- Verify the profile reaches the test Cloud PC.
- Leave a session idle and confirm the expected warning appears before disconnection. Wording can differ from older screenshots.
- Provide input during the warning and confirm that it prevents the disconnect.
- Repeat without input and confirm the session disconnects.
- If configured, wait for the disconnected-session limit and verify that the session ends.
- Confirm the next authorized worker can connect.
- Check that files in approved persistent locations remain available and that line-of-business applications recover correctly after reconnect.

The setting does not appear
- Search for
session time limitsinstead of an old exact label. - Browse manually through the Remote Desktop Services category.
- Confirm the profile uses Windows 10 and later and Settings catalog.
- Check that the device is enrolled and managed by Intune.
The profile is assigned but not applied
- Check device or user membership, assignment filters, exclusions, and scope-tag permissions.
- Allow for Intune check-in or trigger a test-device sync.
- Investigate profile conflicts and enrollment state.
- Ensure the assignment targets Flex/Frontline Cloud PCs rather than an unintended physical Windows group.
Inspect the effective registry value
For diagnostics, inspect the policy area under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTTerminal Services or HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTTerminal Services. The active-idle value is commonly MaxIdleTime (REG_DWORD) in milliseconds:
- 15 minutes:
900000 - 30 minutes:
1800000 - 1 hour:
3600000
These values are troubleshooting indicators, not a replacement for Intune management. HTMD reports MaxIdleTime=1800000 for a 30-minute configuration; another guide reports 3600000 for one hour. See the HTMD registry notes.
Use Event Viewer for policy processing
Open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider > Admin. HTMD’s example uses Intune MDM events 813 and 814, the ADMX_TerminalServer area, and policy identifier TS_SESSIONS_Idle_Limit_2. Treat those identifiers as examples; policy metadata can differ between tenants and revisions.

Users disconnect unexpectedly
- Increase a timeout that is too short for the actual duties.
- Check whether the client is registering keyboard or mouse input.
- Separate network interruptions from genuine idle behavior.
- Look for an independently assigned disconnected-session limit, Flex Shared defaults, or application-specific policies.
Reconnect loses work
In Shared mode, files and settings stored only on the Cloud PC are not retained at sign-out. Redirect known folders to OneDrive or use approved persistent storage before broad deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the active-idle policy sign a user out?
Normally it disconnects the active Remote Desktop Services session. A separate disconnected-session limit controls when that disconnected session is ended.
Can different worker groups use different limits?
Yes. Create separate profiles or assignments and target distinct Intune groups or filters, testing for conflicts and exclusions.
Does this policy affect physical Windows PCs?
It is a Windows Remote Desktop Services policy and can apply to any targeted Windows device. Scope assignments specifically to the intended Flex/Frontline Cloud PCs.

Save them in OneDrive or another organization-approved persistent location because Shared-mode profiles, files, and settings are not retained on the Cloud PC.

For Windows 365 Flex (formerly Frontline), use an Intune Settings Catalog profile under Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Session Time Limits. Set the active-but-idle limit to disconnect forgotten sessions, add a disconnected-session limit when the pool must be released promptly, and validate the result on a test Cloud PC before broad assignment.
