To loop a prerecorded gaming video indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before its input’s -i; put -re there too when FFmpeg should read the file at its native rate. These flags repeat and pace the input—they do not, by themselves, reconnect a failed YouTube publishing connection. The documented FFmpeg reconnect options discussed here are HTTP-specific and should not be mistaken for RTMP/RTMPS output recovery.
How do I loop a video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg?
For a local prerecorded VOD, use -stream_loop -1 before the input. The value -1 means repeat forever; 0 means do not repeat. Since this is an input option, its position relative to -i matters.
Use -re with the input to read a file at its native rate, as if it were arriving in real time. A starting example is:

What the example settings do—and what to verify
-c:v libx264selects H.264 video encoding, while-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset video rate-control values. The shown values are examples, not universal YouTube settings.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a commonly supported pixel format. Confirm compatibility with your source and the current YouTube encoder guidance.-g 120sets a GOP/keyframe interval in frames; whether that is suitable depends on the output frame rate and YouTube’s current requirements.- The
-f flvoutput format is used in this illustrative publishing command. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the ingest protocol and server URL provided by the current Live Control Room configuration.
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and ingest protocol for the actual source and your available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers supported settings and recommends testing with representative motion and sound, then monitoring stream health during the event.
Which FFmpeg reconnect flags should I use?
There is no single reconnect flag in this guidance that can safely be treated as a general-purpose fix for a dropped YouTube stream. FFmpeg documents the reconnect family under its HTTP protocol options. Those options govern reconnecting an HTTP input; they do not establish automatic recovery of an outbound RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection.

What the HTTP reconnect options mean
The HTTP documentation describes options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed, as well as retry timing and count limits. They concern HTTP input conditions: retrying a disconnect before EOF, optionally treating EOF as failure for an endless stream, retrying network connection errors, selecting HTTP response errors such as 503, 4xx, or 5xx, allowing retries for streamed or non-seekable content, and bounding retry behavior.
FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation says of reconnect_at_eof: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” The scope is the HTTP protocol section, not YouTube RTMP output recovery. Consult the installed build’s ffmpeg -h protocol=http for the options it supports and confirm behavior with the actual HTTP source.

How to test the loop and publishing path
- Prepare a representative VOD. Check that the file has the intended audio, motion, resolution, and frame rate. A loop flag repeats the file; it does not fix gaps or discontinuities in the source.
- Set the input options before
-i. For a file that should run at its native rate and repeat, use-re -stream_loop -1 -i "gaming-vod.mp4". - Configure YouTube’s current ingest details. Enter the live server URL and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance.
- Run a test and inspect the result. Confirm that audio and motion match the intended stream and check YouTube’s stream-health status. Pay particular attention when playback returns from the end of the file to its beginning.
- Test failure recovery separately. A successful loop test does not show that publishing will resume after a network interruption. Verify the behavior of the specific FFmpeg build and output protocol you use; distinguish an FFmpeg process being restarted or supervised from an in-process protocol reconnect.
Do not assume the loop is seamless. Audio/video continuity and timestamps at the end-to-start boundary should be checked in a real test; no universal seamless-loop result follows from -stream_loop -1.
Troubleshooting common problems
The video plays once and stops
Check that -stream_loop -1 appears before the intended file’s -i. It applies to the input that follows, not to an input already opened.

The stream runs too quickly or behaves unlike live playback
For a prerecorded file, place -re with the input so it is read at its native rate. Avoid applying it casually to live capture or network inputs, where low read rates may cause packet loss.
An HTTP reconnect option does not restore the YouTube stream
Check which side of the connection the option controls. The documented reconnect family is for HTTP inputs; it does not establish recovery for a failed outgoing RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. Test the configured output path and any process-restart or supervision arrangement separately.

YouTube reports stream health problems
Recheck the ingest URL, private stream key, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and available upload bandwidth against the current YouTube encoder settings. Test with representative sound and motion and monitor stream health rather than relying on the illustrative command’s numbers.
The transition between repetitions has a glitch
Looping repeats the input but does not edit its boundary. Inspect the VOD’s ending and beginning, including audio and timestamps, and test the transition before relying on it for a continuous stream.
