Compress invoice PDFs before you sign them, never after. A PDF digital signature is a cryptographic hash over specific byte ranges of the file, so any rewrite that changes those bytes breaks the integrity check, even if the page looks identical. The safe ingest sequence is: receive the original, create an optimized unsigned copy, sign that copy, and keep the signed file as the record. Savings should be reported by comparing the unsigned original with the unsigned optimized file, not the signed output.
Why a smaller file can invalidate a signature
People often assume that a PDF which looks the same after compression is still the same document. For signed files that assumption fails. Adobe’s technical reference on digital signatures in PDF explains that the signature dictionary’s ByteRange lists the byte sequences included in the hash. In Adobe’s words: “The first number in each pair is the offset in the file (from the beginning, starting from 0) of the beginning of a stream of bytes to be included in the hash.” Adobe, Digital Signatures in a PDF

Compression rewrites streams, object tables and often image data. Those changes move or alter bytes inside the signed ranges, so the validator reports a broken signature even though the rendered page is unchanged. Two things are easy to confuse:

It is the only part that proves the bytes have not changed since signing.
- A visible signature is an image or drawn mark on the page. It shows where a person signed, but it proves nothing about integrity by itself.
The safe order: optimize first, sign last
Put compression upstream of signing, and treat the signed file as the immutable record.

- Store the received file unchanged and assign it a stable document identifier.
- Create an optimized derivative from the original. Keep it unsigned.
- Record the byte length of the original and of the optimized derivative (see the measurement section below).
- Apply the required digital signature to the optimized derivative.
- Validate the signature in the environment that will check it later, such as your archive or your customer’s validator.
- Retain the signed artifact as the record copy. Do not recompress or re-save it.
Optionally, also retain content hashes and the tool name, version and settings used for each derivative. These are good audit controls. They are not mandated by the vendor documentation cited here.
If the invoice arrives already signed
A signed invoice should not go through a general-purpose rewrite. Do not assume that a compressor will leave the signature valid. Adobe documents a specific preservation path in Adobe Acrobat Sign for eligible cases, and it is narrow.
Acrobat Sign signature preservation
- The preservation setting must be enabled in the account configuration. Adobe’s configuration page covers how to set it up.
- The documented eligible case includes a single uploaded PDF that already carries a digital signature.
- Workflows that apply a watermark or a transaction footer are not supported. Adobe’s wording: “Workflows that apply document watermarks or transaction footers aren’t supported because these changes modify the PDF and can invalidate existing digital signatures.” Adobe Acrobat Sign Help, Configure digital signature preservation
- Adobe’s sending guidance describes the preservation workflow as performing lightweight cryptographic validation with restrictions. It is not a substitute for a full signature-validation system. Adobe Acrobat Sign Help, Send a PDF that already has a digital signature
When preservation is off
Adobe cautions that if preservation is not enabled, standard processing can flatten existing digital signatures so only their visual appearance remains. That result looks like a signed invoice but no longer carries a verifiable signature. Treat this as a failure, not a cosmetic change.

Generic compression of signed files
Running a compressor on a signed file and then checking that it opens is not a validation step. Opening and rendering confirm only that the file is readable. Use a signature validator to confirm the signature still verifies. If it does not, the correct recovery is to retrieve the original signed file from the sender or your archive, not to re-sign a modified copy and present it as the original.
Measuring and reporting savings
Use two definitions and keep them fixed across reports:
- Bytes saved = original unsigned PDF size in bytes − optimized unsigned PDF size in bytes.
- Percent saved = bytes saved ÷ original unsigned PDF size in bytes × 100.
A pre-sign measurement describes the optimization step. It is not a measurement of the final signed file, because the signature adds bytes. If you want to report the reduction in the signed record, measure the signed artifact separately and label it as such.

For a worked example, suppose an original unsigned invoice measures 1,048,576 bytes and its optimized unsigned derivative measures 734,003 bytes. Bytes saved are 314,573, and percent saved is 30.0%. This is arithmetic on hypothetical sizes, not a measured result.
Each report row should contain enough to reproduce the calculation:

No typical compression rate for signed invoices is established in the vendor documentation cited here, so do not quote one. Measure your own sample. When you report an aggregate, name the summary statistic (such as median or mean) and state which invoices are in and out of the corpus, for example by source, page count or whether images are present.

Choosing a tool for the ingest step
Evaluate candidate tools against the following criteria:
- Content coverage: whether it optimizes the content that dominates your invoices, especially embedded images, which are often the largest component of scanned invoices.
- Output control: whether you can set the compatibility and quality trade-offs and confirm that the output remains readable by your downstream systems.
- Pipeline fit: whether it runs unattended at ingest and produces a file that can then be signed.
- Signature behavior: how it treats files that already carry signatures. Only use a preservation feature within its documented limits.
- Logging: whether it lets you record input and output sizes and settings for each file.

Its manual describes stream compression, recompression and image optimization options. It also states that qpdf’s primary function is not size optimization and that it does not resample images, so it will not shrink an oversized scan by lowering resolution. qpdf project manual, Optimizing File Size A typical unsigned rewrite looks like this, with the flags confirmed against your installed version using qpdf --help:

Acrobat and qpdf are examples, not a complete survey of available tools.
Keep the pre-sign compression rule in front of every tool decision. A feature that compresses a file does not make it safe to compress a file that has already been signed.
