Company of Heroes 3 multiplayer modes compared: Final Stand (“Last Stand”), co-op, and PvP (2026)

Final Stand is a wave-defense PvE mode, standard co-op is a conventional team battle against AI or shared scenarios, and PvP is competition against other players. Final Stand is the only one built around escalating rounds and roguelite upgrades. At its July 29, 2026 launch, it supported one player or two-player co-op; Relic has announced three-player support for the planned November 5, 2026 version 3.0 update, but that expansion was not live on October 18, 2026.

Company of Heroes 3’s base game separately advertises Online Co-op and Online PvP. Choosing the right mode therefore depends less on the word “multiplayer” and more on whether you want a repeatable defensive challenge, a cooperative real-time-strategy battle, or direct human competition.

Company of Heroes 3 multiplayer modes at a glance

Mode What you do Confirmed party size Progression and access Best fit
Final Stand Build defenses and survive increasingly difficult enemy waves Solo or two-player co-op at launch; three-player mode announced for version 3.0 Run-specific choices, persistent faction upgrades, 12 rounds, Endless Mode, Browse Games lobby Solo players or friends wanting a focused PvE challenge
Standard co-op Coordinate armies against AI or complete shared scenarios Online co-op is confirmed; the captured official information does not state current team-size limits Conventional game progression and scenario rules; detailed lobby formats vary by mode Friends who want a normal Company of Heroes battle without wave-defense rules
PvP Defeat human opponents through positioning, timing, build choices and adaptation Online PvP is confirmed; exact current queue sizes are not established in the cited official material Competitive execution; ranking and matchmaking details require current in-game verification Players seeking a direct test against other commanders

Do not treat “co-op” as a synonym for Final Stand. Final Stand is a specific standalone mode with a fixed defensive structure. Standard co-op is the broader online option in the base game and can use conventional battles or shared objectives instead.

What Final Stand actually is

Final Stand is an all-new standalone wave-defense experience from Relic. You prepare a position, place and improve defenses, and then withstand enemy attacks that become harder over the course of a run. It uses Company of Heroes combat, but its structure is closer to a replayable challenge mode than to a normal skirmish.

The 12-round run

A standard run contains 12 increasingly challenging rounds. Between waves, you select randomized units or abilities that remain available for that run. Those choices force you to adjust your defensive plan rather than repeat one fixed build every time. If you want a run that continues beyond the regular sequence, Final Stand also includes an Endless Mode.

Roguelite progression between runs

Run choices are temporary: they apply to the current attempt. Between runs, you unlock persistent upgrades for your faction. That creates two separate decisions. During a match, spend your limited opportunities on tools that solve the next threat; over multiple attempts, invest in upgrades that make later runs more viable. A failed run is therefore not necessarily wasted time, because the persistent layer continues to develop.

Content variety

Relic’s published feature list includes five battlegrounds, eight difficulty levels, 36 boss units and 18 dynamic events, along with all four Company of Heroes factions. The combination of randomized choices, events and difficulty settings is intended to make repeated runs play differently. It does not mean every map, boss or event appears in every attempt; their appearance depends on the run and selected settings.

Company Of Heroes 3 Launch Edition With Metal Case
  • Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents.
  • Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
  • Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
  • Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
  • Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.

Is Final Stand single-player or co-op?

Both. The official FAQ describes Final Stand as “designed for singleplayer or two-player co-op.” The launch configuration therefore supports one person playing alone or two people sharing the defensive challenge online. It is not a mode that requires a full team.

Joining another player

Relic later added a Browse Games lobby for Final Stand co-op. The hot-fix description says players can search open lobbies, view the selected map and difficulty, create a public or private game, and customize options. That is different from relying only on an invitation: you can look for an available run, or control access yourself by making the lobby private.

Three-player support is announced, not current at the research date

Relic’s October 2026 announcement schedules a three-player Final Stand mode for the planned version 3.0 update on November 5, 2026. The announcement says it will work across all battlegrounds and scale difficulty for the larger group. On October 18, 2026, that feature should be treated as upcoming content, not as a guaranteed live option. If three friends are trying to play immediately, verify that the update has arrived before assuming the third slot is available.

Final Stand price, installation and availability

Final Stand launched on July 29, 2026 for PC through Steam alongside update 2.5.0. Its listed price is $29.99 USD. Players who already own Company of Heroes 3 receive a stated 20% discount. Existing owners do not need a separate install; Final Stand is delivered as an addition to the existing game installation rather than as an unrelated second client.

How standard co-op differs from Final Stand

The base game’s official Steam listing identifies Online Co-op as a supported feature. In practical terms, standard co-op is for players who want to command armies together against AI opponents or work through cooperative scenarios with shared objectives. You are coordinating a conventional real-time-strategy match rather than progressing through Final Stand’s 12-wave structure.

When standard co-op is the better choice

  • You want a normal battlefield. Standard co-op is the natural choice when you expect territory, bases, resources and army control to follow the usual Company of Heroes format.
  • You want scenario objectives. Shared missions can be preferable to Final Stand’s single survival condition when your group enjoys capturing locations, completing tasks or defeating an AI force through a longer battle.
  • You dislike run resets. Final Stand’s temporary choices and persistent upgrades are central to its design. Standard co-op is more suitable when you want each match to stand on its own.
  • Your group size does not match Final Stand. Final Stand’s launch limit is one or two players. Standard co-op may fit a different group, but the official material captured here does not state its complete current team-size rules, so confirm the available format in the game lobby.

The published sources do not provide a complete, current list of standard co-op maps, team sizes or queue rules. Avoid assuming that a format remembered from an older patch is still available.

What PvP offers

The same Steam listing identifies Online PvP. PvP replaces the predictable behavior of an AI opponent with a human who can scout, change plans and punish mistakes. Winning depends on information, positioning, timing, build choices and the ability to adapt when the opponent does something unexpected.

Why PvP feels different from both PvE modes

  • No scripted threat curve. Final Stand escalates through designed waves; a human may attack early, delay, feint or change production.
  • Every decision is contested. A unit choice or flank that works against AI can fail when an opponent sees it coming.
  • Practice has a steeper feedback loop. Beginners must learn the interface and faction tools while also reading an opponent’s intentions.

Relic’s October 2026 preview for version 3.0 announces an economy rework for larger-team multiplayer, an artillery rebalance, changes aimed at reducing anti-vehicle massing, and a stronger emphasis on positioning. These are announced balance and feel changes, not proof of a particular ranking system or matchmaking rule.

Which mode is best for beginners?

Start with Final Stand if you want controlled pressure

Final Stand is usually the gentlest introduction to multiplayer-style decision-making because you can play solo or with one friend while the mode presents a clear objective: survive the next wave. The difficulty levels let you choose how punishing the run should be, and the randomized rewards encourage experimentation without immediately matching you against an expert human. Begin on a lower difficulty, learn how each faction’s defensive tools interact with the waves, and raise the setting after you can consistently reach later rounds.

Choose standard co-op to learn the full RTS loop

Standard co-op is a better first step if your goal is to learn ordinary base building, territory control and army coordination. A friend can explain build orders, resource priorities and unit roles while the AI gives you time to recover from a mistake. Agree on responsibilities before the match—such as who scouts, who holds a flank and who responds to vehicles—so that two players do not spend resources solving the same problem.

Move to PvP when you want unpredictable opponents

PvP is appropriate once you are comfortable reading the battlefield and replacing a failed plan. New players should expect losses while learning. Review why you lost map control, failed to answer a unit type or arrived too late to reinforce; changing one decision in the next match is more useful than copying an entire build without understanding it.

A practical way to choose and start

  1. Decide whether the opponent should be AI or human. Select Final Stand or standard co-op for PvE; select PvP for direct competition.
  2. Count the players who must fit today. One player can run Final Stand alone; two can use its launch co-op; a third player must wait for the announced version 3.0 mode or choose another multiplayer format.
  3. Pick the desired match structure. Choose Final Stand for 12 escalating rounds and an Endless option, standard co-op for conventional battles or shared scenarios, and PvP for an open-ended contest against another person.
  4. Set the access method. In Final Stand, use Browse Games to search open lobbies or create a public or private lobby. For the base game’s co-op and PvP, use the current multiplayer menus and confirm the displayed map, team size and queue before readying up.
  5. Match the difficulty to your objective. In Final Stand, begin with a manageable difficulty while learning the wave patterns. In co-op, use AI opponents that leave room to practice. In PvP, treat the first matches as scouting and mechanics practice rather than a test of your final skill.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling Final Stand “PvP.” It is PvE wave defense, even when two people play together.
  • Assuming two-player co-op means three-player support. The launch FAQ confirms solo or two-player co-op. Three-player support belongs to the announced version 3.0 update and must be checked after that release.
  • Expecting Final Stand to preserve every unit choice permanently. Units and abilities selected between waves last for the current run; persistent faction upgrades are a separate between-run system.
  • Assuming all multiplayer team sizes are documented. Online Co-op and Online PvP are confirmed for the base game, but the captured official pages do not state every current queue size or ranked rule.
  • Buying a second client unnecessarily. Final Stand owners of the base game do not need a separate install.
  • Planning around an old patch. The 2.5.0 launch, the later Browse Games hot fix and the planned 3.0 changes affect how access and group sizes work. Check the current version shown by the game before troubleshooting a missing option.

Bottom line: pick the mode that matches the kind of challenge you want

Choose Final Stand for a repeatable, defensive PvE run with 12 escalating rounds, randomized in-run rewards and persistent faction upgrades. Choose standard co-op when you and your friends want to command armies together in conventional AI battles or shared scenarios. Choose PvP when the point is to outthink and outmaneuver another person.

As of October 18, 2026, Final Stand supports solo play or two-player co-op, with three-player support announced for November 5’s planned version 3.0 update. That distinction is the key practical limit for groups deciding what to launch tonight.
