As of October 13, 2026, it supports solo play and two-player co-op, with four factions, temporary choices during each run, and permanent faction progression between runs. A three-player mode is announced for the planned November 5, 2026 version 3.0 update, but it was not listed as live at the research date.
This guide explains exactly how many people can play, which armies are available, how the roguelite-style progression works, what a run contains, and what you need to buy or install. “Final Stand” is the current Company of Heroes 3 product; “The Last Stand” can also refer to an older wave-based mode in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution.

Final Stand at a glance
The official product description presents Final Stand as a self-contained Company of Heroes 3 experience rather than an add-on that requires the main game. It is listed as a PC title on Steam. The core loop is to survive escalating waves, make randomized choices that shape the current battlegroup, and use faction-specific unlocks to improve future attempts.

How many players can play together?
Current support: solo or two-player co-op
At the research timestamp, Final Stand is designed for one player or a two-person cooperative team. Relic’s FAQ states: “Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is designed for singleplayer or two-player co-op.” That is the live support described in the official listing, so do not assume a larger party size when buying or planning a session.
Solo play gives you full responsibility for battlefield decisions and the run’s randomized choices. In two-player co-op, both players share the wave-defense scenario and coordinate their battlegroups. The available material does not establish separate solo-only factions, exclusive co-op units, or a competitive player-versus-player mode.
Three-player mode is announced, not current at the cutoff
Relic’s October 8, 2026 announcement says the Company of Heroes 3 version 3.0 update is planned for November 5, 2026 and will add three-player Final Stand with difficulty scaling. Because the research date is October 13, this is a forthcoming feature, not a feature that had already shipped. If you read this after November 5, check the latest patch notes or product page before treating three-player support as available.

Finding a co-op game
A July 30 hotfix added a Browse Games lobby list for co-op. The notes say players can browse open lobbies, see the selected map and difficulty, and create either private or public games with preferred options. This gives you a direct way to inspect an open session instead of relying only on an invitation. Lobby availability can change with the player population and later patches, so the feature should be understood as a matchmaking aid, not a guarantee that an open room will always be listed.
Which factions are in Final Stand?
Final Stand has four playable factions. The official listing says each faction has its own progression tree, but the cited material does not rank them or identify one as objectively strongest.
| Faction | What is established |
|---|---|
| US Forces | Playable faction with its own progression tree. |
| Wehrmacht | Playable faction with its own progression tree. |
| British Forces | Playable faction with its own progression tree. |
| Deutsches Afrikakorps | Playable faction with its own progression tree. |
The separate trees matter because your long-term unlocks are tied to the faction you are developing. Switching armies is therefore more than changing a visual theme: it changes which persistent perks and unique abilities you can earn. The available official description does not provide a complete unlock list, level-by-level costs, or a balance tier list, so claims that one faction is universally “best” would go beyond the published information.
How does progression work?
Choices inside a run are temporary
At the start of a run, you construct a battlegroup. After each wave, Final Stand presents randomized units or abilities and lets you choose how to adapt. The official description says those selections persist for the duration of that run. In practical terms, a unit or ability you select during one attempt helps that attempt; it is not automatically a permanent account unlock when the run ends.
Rank #3
- ACCLAIMED TACTICAL GAMEPLAY IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER - Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents
- NEW WAYS TO PLAY OFFER PLAYERS MORE OPTIONS THAN EVER BEFORE - Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice
- CINEMATIC MILITARY ACTION PUSHES BOTH GAMEPLAY & VISUALS TO NEW HEIGHTS - Explore untold stories from the intense conflict in North Africa and the Italian peninsula, such as those of the Italian partisans
This system makes each run a decision chain. Early selections can influence how you handle later waves, bosses, and battlefield events, while the randomized offer means you cannot assume that every attempt will produce the same composition. The published material does not state the size of the choice pool, reroll rules, or whether choices can be refunded, so those details should be learned from the in-game interface rather than assumed.
Unlocks between runs are persistent
Across runs, you unlock persistent perks and unique abilities in faction-specific progression trees. These are the long-term layer of Final Stand: they remain available for later attempts and are associated with the faction whose tree you advance. The description does not state whether every unlock applies automatically, requires a loadout slot, or has a separate resource cost. It does establish the important distinction: temporary run power comes from post-wave choices, while permanent growth comes from the faction tree.
What this means for planning
- Choose a faction whose progression you want to develop, because persistent advancement is faction-specific.
- Expect a run to evolve rather than follow a fixed build; randomized post-wave offers can change your priorities.
- Treat a failed attempt as both a tactical result and a source of longer-term progression, without assuming that every temporary unit carries over.
- When comparing guides or builds, check whether advice concerns a single run’s choices or permanent tree unlocks. They are different systems.
What happens during a run?
Twelve escalating waves
The advertised main structure is 12 increasingly difficult rounds. Bosses and dynamic battlefield events are part of that structure, so the challenge is not simply a repeated fight against identical enemy groups. The listing presents the waves as a finite run for players who want a defined objective and endpoint.
Endless Mode
Endless Mode is offered as an alternative challenge. The cited listing does not define a maximum wave, scoring formula, leaderboard system, or special Endless rewards. It is safest to treat it as the replayable option for players who want to continue beyond the 12-wave format, rather than assigning unsupported rules to it.
Rank #4
- Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents.
- Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
- Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
- Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
- Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.

These are advertised feature counts, not a promise that every combination appears in every run or that all content is available at every difficulty. The official description also does not say whether battlegrounds are selected by the host, randomized, unlocked progressively, or tied to particular modes.
Do you need Company of Heroes 3?
No. Final Stand is sold as a standalone product, and the Steam listing says ownership of an earlier Company of Heroes title is not required. Someone who does not own Company of Heroes 3 can buy Final Stand as its own PC product.
Relic’s FAQ also says that owners of the base Company of Heroes 3 game do not need a separate installation to access the mode. That is different from requiring the base game: existing owners can access it within their current setup, while new players can purchase the standalone product without first buying the main game.

What did Final Stand cost at announcement?
Relic’s announcement listed a price of $29.99 USD, a 20% discount for existing Company of Heroes 3 owners, and a 10% launch-period discount. These were announcement-time terms, not a guarantee of the current price or an ongoing discount. Steam prices are regional and can change, so check the local store listing before purchasing.

How Final Stand differs from the base game
Final Stand and the main Company of Heroes 3 experience should not be treated as interchangeable modes. The key differences established by the official materials are:
| Comparison point | Final Stand | What the cited material establishes about the base game |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Standalone purchase; earlier Company of Heroes ownership is not required. | The base game is not required to start Final Stand. |
| Group size in the current listing | Solo or two-player co-op. | The supplied Final Stand materials do not define base-game group sizes. |
| Core structure | Escalating waves, bosses, events, and Endless Mode. | The supplied materials do not describe the base game’s campaign or multiplayer structure in detail. |
| Progression | Temporary post-wave choices plus persistent, faction-specific trees. | The supplied materials do not establish that the base game uses this same progression model. |
If you are comparing Final Stand with another wave-defense mode, use the same questions: how many people can join, whether it is standalone, which factions are available, what carries between waves and runs, whether Endless play exists, and whether a feature is live or merely announced.

The most time-sensitive fact is the three-player feature. At the October 13, 2026 cutoff, the official listing described one- and two-player play, while Relic had announced three-player support for the planned November 5 version 3.0 update. A page published after that date should verify the release status rather than copying the announcement as if it were current.
Price, discounts, lobby behavior, difficulty tuning, and content counts can also change through updates. The safest buying checklist is:
- Open the current regional Steam listing and confirm the price and ownership requirements.
- Check the latest Relic or in-game patch information for the status of three-player co-op.
- Confirm that the Browse Games lobby option appears if you intend to join public co-op.
- Choose one of the four factions and read its available progression tree before committing long-term unlocks.
- Decide whether you want the fixed 12-wave objective or the replayability of Endless Mode.
Who is Final Stand for?
Final Stand is a fit for a player who wants Company of Heroes-style faction choices in a repeatable survival format, either alone or with one co-op partner under the current listing. Its defining appeal is the combination of short-term adaptation and long-term faction development: randomized units or abilities shape the present run, while perks and unique abilities give later attempts a persistent direction.
It is a less certain fit if your purchase depends on a three-person party today, a published faction tier list, or a detailed guarantee about future downloadable content. The available announcement confirms the planned three-player update, but it does not establish its final release status at the October 13 cutoff or provide a complete post-launch content schedule.
