The Orioner Z8 pairs a reported 45 mm Bohler M390 blade with a Grade 5 titanium handle in a 75 mm-closed, 56.8 g folding knife. That makes it unusually compact on paper, but the available coverage describes a crowdfunding campaign—not confirmed current retail stock—and its headline cutting claim has no published test protocol.
What the Orioner Z8 is—and what is reported about it
New Atlas’s August 2026 coverage identifies the Z8 as a compact folding knife with Bohler M390 blade steel and a Grade 5 titanium handle. The reported blade is 45 mm (1.77 inches) long and 3 mm thick; the knife measures 75 mm (2.95 inches) closed and weighs 56.8 g (2 ounces). These are published specifications, not measurements independently taken here. New Atlas describes the blade geometry and six-stage grinding as part of the design intended to support cutting performance.

How the small format translates to carry
A closed length just under 3 inches and a 2-ounce reported weight make the Z8 compact enough to carry in a pocket. Coverage also calls it keychain-friendly, but the available description does not establish that it has an integrated key ring or report a carry test. It lists a removable pocket clip, so “compact pocket knife” is the more precise description than assuming it attaches directly to keys.

These are described features; the cited coverage does not provide independent testing of their operation. It also does not specify a locking mechanism, so buyers should not infer one from the presence of a bearing pivot.

What the 750-cut claim does—and does not—show
Ordinary Chaos reported Orioner’s claim that the Z8 can make more than 750 cuts. The article does not state what material was cut, how cuts were counted, how many knives were tested or whether the result was independently verified. It is therefore a manufacturer-reported figure, not a validated comparison with other knives or proof of a particular edge life. Ordinary Chaos
New Atlas also reports Orioner’s descriptions of vacuum heat treatment, deep cryogenic processing and multi-stage tempering. Without independent documentation or a disclosed comparative test, those process descriptions do not establish how the Z8’s edge retention or durability compares with another model.

Size context: the LionSTEEL T.R.E. is a different format
LionSTEEL’s 2023 catalogue lists its T.R.E. with Bohler M390 steel, a 74 mm blade and 175 mm overall length. The Z8’s reported 45 mm blade and 75 mm closed length put it in a substantially smaller format; the T.R.E. is useful only as an example that titanium-and-M390 folders come in different sizes, not as a direct performance or value comparison. What to check before choosing a compact knife
- Carry: Confirm whether the removable clip suits your preferred carry method; the coverage does not establish an integrated key ring.
- Mechanism: Look for the actual lock type and opening details in the current product listing or maker documentation; the reported ball-bearing pivot alone does not identify the lock.
- Performance evidence: Treat the 750-plus-cut figure as a maker claim unless a defined, independently verifiable test is supplied.
- Local rules: Knife carry laws vary by location. No jurisdiction-specific legal guidance is established by the cited coverage, so check current official rules where you live and where you plan to carry it.
- Campaign or retail status: Verify whether an offer is still active, what shipping costs apply and whether delivery has been confirmed before paying.
