Es un relato atribuido a un antiguo responsable de seguridad de Apple, no un arreglo confirmado por un contrato publicado ni por el DMV. Y la afirmación de que «nunca le multaron» es demasiado amplia: una búsqueda de registros citada por Los Angeles Times no encontró multas relacionadas con placas.
El relato: un Mercedes nuevo antes de las placas permanentes
Jon Callas, antiguo responsable de seguridad de Apple, contó en una entrevista publicada por iTWire en octubre de 2011 que Jobs conducía un Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG plateado y lo sustituía por otro similar cerca del final del sexto mes de leasing. Según esa explicación, el ciclo se repetía antes de que el coche necesitara placas permanentes visibles. iTWire recogió el relato de Callas; otra cobertura contemporánea también lo atribuyó a él, pero no se localizó el contrato de leasing que lo documentaría. Business Insider describió la misma versión.
Por tanto, la mecánica del cambio semestral es plausible dentro del contexto legal que describió la prensa de la época, pero debe presentarse como una explicación atribuida, no como un hecho probado por documentos oficiales. El coche asociado a la historia era un SL55 AMG, no una recomendación ni una pieza necesaria para entender una norma general.
Cómo encajaba el permiso temporal en las reglas de California de entonces
En una nota de 2014, Los Angeles Times explicó que el permiso temporal se colocaba en una esquina del parabrisas y que, en el contexto normativo descrito en ese momento, el plazo para instalar placas permanentes podía extenderse hasta seis meses. Ese plazo es histórico, no una guía sobre la ley vigente. La regla puede haber cambiado y la información disponible aquí no establece el requisito actual del DMV de California. Quien necesite matricular un vehículo hoy debe consultar la normativa vigente directamente con el DMV, en lugar de extrapolar el plazo de 2014.
Qué significa realmente que «nunca le multaron»
La formulación verificable es más limitada: en octubre de 2011, Los Angeles Times informó que una búsqueda de registros de tráfico no encontró multas relacionadas con placas para Jobs. El periódico describió el resultado de esa búsqueda. Eso no demuestra que Jobs nunca recibiera una multa de ningún tipo, que la policía nunca lo detuviera ni que no existiera un registro fuera del alcance de esa búsqueda.

La conversación que Walter Isaacson atribuyó a Jobs
En una entrevista televisiva recogida por Yahoo News, el biógrafo Walter Isaacson contó que preguntó a Jobs por qué conducía sin matrícula. Según Isaacson, la conversación fue:
“I said, ‘Why don’t you have a license plate?’ He said, ‘Well, I don’t want people following me.’ I said, ‘Well not having a license plate is probably more noticeable.’ He said, ‘Yah, you’re probably right. You know why I don’t have a license plate?’ I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Because I don’t have a license plate.’”
