They answer related but different questions, so use AirNow for official AQI and health information and treat community-sensor readings as supplemental evidence.
What each kind of monitor is for
| Comparison | Government station | Community monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Regulatory-grade monitoring that supports official air-quality and standards-related reporting. | Local screening, education, community science, and supplemental detail. |
| Where readings come from | Fixed monitoring locations; the number and placement vary by network. | Potentially many devices closer to neighborhood-scale sources, depending on community deployment. |
| Time detail | Depends on the pollutant, monitoring network, and reporting product. | Often frequent short-term readings; the interval depends on the device and service. |
| Data quality | Collected under formal monitoring requirements and quality procedures. | Varies by device and conditions; data may need quality checks, collocation, correction, or calibration. |
| Best interpretation | Use for official AQI and health information. | Useful for exploring patterns and relative changes, with uncertainty acknowledged. |
| Pollutants measured | Varies by station and network. | Device-specific; check the monitor’s stated capabilities. |

What a community monitor can reveal
A dense network can help reveal local variation that a smaller number of fixed stations may not capture in the same detail. In EPA and Maricopa County’s Phoenix Testbed project, PurpleAir PM2.5 sensors were deployed across the city. EPA reports that the network helped researchers explore spatial concentration patterns, observe changes during the day, and provide supporting information for identifying exceptional events. Regulatory-grade measurements were also used to validate calibration methods. The project phases ran from November 2018 to July 2019 and from July 2019 to March 2021; its findings illustrate a use case, not a performance guarantee for every sensor network. They do not, on their own, establish that pollution exceeded a regulatory standard.

Why a sensor reading may differ from AirNow
A mismatch does not necessarily mean either number is wrong. The readings may reflect different pollutants, averaging periods, locations, or data processing. Sensors can also be affected by weather, placement, exposure, and calibration; their data may include questionable points or systematic over- or under-estimation. EPA notes that sensor limitations can include insufficient selectivity or sensitivity and lack of weatherproofing. EPA: Frequent Questions About Air Sensors.
For selected PurpleAir data shown on its Fire and Smoke Map, EPA applies quality-control checks and an extended U.S.-wide correction equation because uncorrected, out-of-the-box sensor readings are not comparable to regulatory-grade data. That example demonstrates why it matters to know whether a displayed sensor value has been checked or corrected; it does not mean the same processing is applied to every device or platform. How to compare a community sensor with a station
- Confirm the pollutant. Make sure both readings refer to the same pollutant. A PM2.5 monitor does not measure every pollutant or automatically provide official PM10 reporting.
- Check the averaging period. A short-term sensor value and a station’s differently averaged or reported value may not be directly comparable.
- Check location and timing. Readings taken in different places or at different times can reflect real local variation rather than an instrument disagreement.
- Find out what processing was applied. Look for quality-control checks, correction, or calibration information on the service displaying the sensor data.
- Consider measurement conditions. Temperature, humidity, device placement, weather exposure, and a potentially questionable data point can affect sensor readings.
EPA describes evaluating sensors alongside regulation-grade monitors under the same air-quality and weather conditions. A comparison made without matching the measurement context can be misleading. EPA: Evaluation of Emerging Air Sensor Performance.
What to do with an unexpected reading
- For current official AQI and health information, consult AirNow. EPA recommends AirNow for air-quality and health information. EPA: What Do My Sensor Readings Mean?
- Check whether the sensor measures the pollutant you care about and whether the display identifies any correction or quality-control method.
- Look at the reading as part of a pattern rather than treating one surprising value as conclusive; consider its timing, location, weather, and device conditions.
- Do not use low-cost sensor readings alone as proof of a federal ambient-air-quality-standard exceedance or as a direct measure of an individual’s health risk. EPA says data from its Air Sensor Loan Programs are not intended for comparison with federal ambient air quality standards; loan equipment and conditions vary by program. EPA: Air Sensor Loan Programs.
Know what the specific monitor measures
Sensor readings describe only the pollutants the device is designed to measure. EPA identifies the PurpleAir PA-II-SD as a fine particulate matter (PM2.5) sensor that can be used indoors or outdoors. Its readings should not be generalized to pollutants it does not measure or treated as official PM10 or AQI reporting. EPA: Air Sensor Loan Programs.
