Many web development problems come from treating a page as finished when it works only for one kind of user, one screen size, one load condition, or one trusted input. Build semantic, keyboard-usable interfaces; design for a range of viewports; measure performance; and treat browser and integration data as untrusted. These are practical, evidence-backed areas to check—not a ranked list of the most frequent mistakes.
1. Treating accessibility as a visual polish task
A page can look correct while its structure, controls, or reading order make it difficult or impossible to use with a keyboard or assistive technology. Accessibility is part of whether the interface behaves correctly, not a layer to add after the design is done.
Use elements for their meaning
Use headings, lists, buttons, links, and form controls according to their purpose. Keep heading levels and document structure logical, and make sure the order in the markup makes sense when read without the visual layout. CSS can change how an element looks, but it does not automatically change the meaning assistive technologies receive.
Make forms understandable and operable
- Associate each form control with a clear label; do not rely on placeholder text as its only label.
- Ensure interactive elements work using a keyboard, and preserve a visible focus indicator so users can tell where they are.
- When validation fails, identify the field, describe the problem specifically, and offer a useful correction where possible.
- Set the document language and provide meaningful alternative text for informative images. For decorative images, avoid making assistive technology announce irrelevant descriptions.
Check the CSS and JavaScript too
Custom styling, event handling, animation, and scripted controls can interfere with expected keyboard behavior or make content harder to perceive. Keep interaction behavior predictable, check text readability and contrast, and provide user control for motion where needed. Test the actual interface with a keyboard as well as with accessibility tools; automated checks alone do not establish that every interaction works for people.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
W3C WAI’s web accessibility tips cover labels, alternative text, document language, structure, keyboard access, and helping users correct form errors. MDN’s guide to CSS and JavaScript accessibility explains how visual styling and scripting choices can affect access. These checks support accessible development but do not replace evaluating the requirements that apply to a particular site.
2. Building for one screen width
A fixed-width layout that looks tidy on a desktop can force horizontal scrolling on a narrow screen or leave excessive empty space on a wide one. Responsive design is an approach to adapting layout and media to a range of viewport sizes, not a single breakpoint or device preset.
Prefer flexible layouts
Use flexible grids and sizing, media queries where the content needs a layout change, and images that can adapt to their available space. Include the viewport meta tag so mobile browsers can lay out the page at the device’s width. Avoid assuming that a particular phone, tablet, or desktop width represents all users.

Test content and zoom, not just the mockup
- Check representative narrow and wide viewports and look for clipped content, unwanted horizontal scrolling, overlapping controls, and unused space.
- Try longer headings, translated or user-generated text, and forms with validation messages; real content often exposes layout assumptions that short sample text hides.
- Test enlarged text and zoom. W3C WAI advises checking that at 200% text enlargement content is not clipped and does not require horizontal scrolling.
MDN’s responsive design guide describes accommodating a range of screen sizes and resolutions with modern CSS layout techniques. A screenshot at one width is a useful check, but it cannot demonstrate that a layout works across the range.
3. Optimizing performance by guesswork
Performance includes objective load and runtime measurements as well as what people experience: whether a page responds promptly and feels smooth. A single audit score cannot guarantee a good experience for every user, and an optimization chosen without measurement may not address the actual bottleneck.
Measure the page before changing it
Profile the page and identify which resources or work are costly before optimizing. MDN lists Firefox Developer Tools, PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, WebPageTest, and Chrome User Experience Report among the available tools. Local profiling and whole-page audits can help investigate different questions; choose based on what you need to diagnose rather than treating one tool as universally best.

Keep avoidable work out of the page
- Ship only the JavaScript the page needs and avoid unnecessary execution.
- Optimize images and other media, compress resources, and consider lazy loading media that is offscreen.
- Use a performance budget when it fits the project, so new code and assets do not quietly undo earlier improvements.
Separate repeatable checks from real-user trends
Synthetic monitoring runs controlled checks that are useful for spotting short-term regressions. Real-user monitoring helps track longer-term performance trends in actual use. They answer different questions, so use the evidence appropriate to the decision rather than treating one as a substitute for the other. MDN’s performance best practices and performance overview provide further guidance.
4. Trusting data because it came from your own interface
Browser-side validation improves feedback, but it is not a security boundary: users can alter requests, and data can also arrive through APIs, third-party integrations, internal services, caches, browser storage, or hidden form fields. Treat data as untrusted until it has been validated and handled safely at the relevant boundary.

Handle data according to where it goes
Avoid putting untrusted strings into innerHTML; OWASP warns that this can allow script execution. Use safe text insertion when adding plain text to the page. When data must be placed in another context—such as an HTML attribute, URL, or JavaScript—use handling appropriate to that context. There is no single generic sanitizing step that makes arbitrary data safe everywhere.
Use safe database and output patterns
- Use parameterized SQL queries rather than constructing queries by concatenating untrusted values.
- Apply context-aware output encoding when rendering data.
- Keep validation, output handling, and authorization as distinct checks; passing one does not imply the others are satisfied.
OWASP’s frontend security cheat sheet discusses untrusted data and client-side security limits. Its input validation guidance covers server-side validation, parameterized queries, output encoding, and separate authorization checks.

Testing should reflect what a page does, who uses it, what data it handles, and what could go wrong. A routine content page and a workflow involving accounts or sensitive actions do not necessarily need identical test depth. Start with the user-visible and security-sensitive paths, then add checks that fit the project’s risk and stack.

Use complementary checks
- Navigate the page and operate its controls with a keyboard; use accessibility tools as one input, not as a replacement for interaction review.
- Check important layouts at representative viewport sizes, zoom levels, and content lengths.
- Profile important pages and monitor for performance regressions using repeatable checks and, when available, real-user trends.
- Review server-side validation, authorization, error handling, and workflows involving untrusted input.
For security testing, OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide introduction describes the guide as a methodology and collection of techniques, not a rigid checklist or compliance standard. Its coverage includes areas such as identity, authentication, authorization, sessions, input handling, error handling, cryptography, business logic, and workflow security. Adapt testing to the application’s threat model, risk tolerance, and development practices.
Inspect a page at multiple widths
For a visual check, capture the pages and viewport sizes that matter to your users, then inspect the resulting images for clipping, overlap, and unexpected blank areas. This can help catch layout regressions; it does not prove keyboard accessibility, correct semantics, secure data handling, or performance.
