1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn a beginner game, object-oriented code gets harder to extend when inheritance is stretched to represent mix-and-match abilities, one class accumulates unrelated jobs, or systems depend on one another unnecessarily. These are recurring design failure modes, not a statistically ranked list. Start with the simplest structure that makes the game easy to change; add components, events, or patterns only when a real problem calls for them.
When does inheritance become a problem in a game?
Inheritance works well when one type is genuinely a specialized form of another and the relationship is likely to remain stable. A FlyingEnemy that is a kind of Enemy may fit. Trouble starts when the class tree is also asked to represent capabilities that different kinds of objects share.
Apple’s archived GameplayKit guide uses a tower-defense example: a shooting enemy and a tower may both need targeting and firing, but they do not naturally belong under the same specialized subclass. Moving those behaviors into a common root can make that root responsible for too much and lead to checks for each object’s actual subclass. The result is a harder-to-maintain hierarchy, not necessarily a simpler one. Apple’s GameplayKit entity-component guide illustrates this design pressure.
Warning signs in a class tree
- Adding one capability means creating several new subclasses or awkward intermediate classes.
- A shared parent needs to ask what kind of child it is before deciding what to do.
- Changing behavior for one object risks changing unrelated objects that inherit it.
- The hierarchy describes combinations of abilities rather than stable “is a” relationships.
Inheritance and composition in game development
Composition lets an object combine capabilities through components instead of acquiring all behavior through its place in a class hierarchy. For example, a tower and a shooting enemy could each be given targeting and firing components without claiming that either is a subtype of the other. Apple presents this approach through GameplayKit’s entity-component model, and Microsoft’s beginner space-game curriculum teaches both inheritance and composition. Those examples support treating the approaches as tools, not treating composition as mandatory for every small game.

| Question | Inheritance is a better fit when… | Composition is a better fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| What is the relationship? | The new type is a stable, meaningful subtype of an existing type. | The object needs a capability that is independent of its type. |
| How are behaviors shared? | Related types share behavior naturally through the hierarchy. | Unrelated types need the same behavior, or abilities need to be combined in different ways. |
| What happens as the game grows? | The class tree remains understandable as new types are added. | New combinations can be assembled without multiplying subclasses or changing a crowded root class. |
For a tiny game with a few stable object types, a straightforward class per object may be clearer than an entity-component framework. Consider composition when the hierarchy is becoming awkward, not simply because a pattern exists.
Giving one class too many unrelated jobs
A player class can start by handling movement and then acquire input, health, inventory, user-interface updates, and saving. Each extra responsibility creates another reason to change the class and another place for changes to interfere. Unity’s overview of SOLID describes the single-responsibility principle as a module, class, or function being responsible for one thing. Unity’s game-programming-patterns overview provides that design context.

Separate responsibilities only when doing so improves clarity. For instance, input can tell a player controller what action was requested, while a health object tracks damage and a UI element displays the current health. In a very small prototype, keeping these together can be easier to follow; split them when independent changes or testing become difficult.
Making systems depend on each other unnecessarily
A direct call is often the clearest solution when one object has one obvious dependency. But if a player class directly updates the interface, achievements, audio, and several other systems whenever an event occurs, those systems become tied to that class. Changes can ripple across code that should be independent.

An event or observer mechanism can help when multiple independent systems need to react without the sender owning or knowing about each one. Unity’s observer tutorial describes the pattern as a way to support loose coupling between interacting objects. Unity’s observer-pattern tutorial explains the approach.
- Use a direct call for one simple, clear relationship.
- Consider events or observers when multiple listeners need to respond independently.
- Avoid adding a pattern by default. Unity cautions that patterns are tools to solve problems, not finished solutions to copy and paste.
Assuming the game loop or callback order
Game behavior should not depend on how fast a particular computer runs. A movement update based on “distance per frame” can behave differently at different frame rates. Use the engine’s intended time-step or delta-time approach so movement and other time-based behavior are tied to elapsed time rather than raw frame count.

Also learn the engine’s update order and object lifecycle instead of guessing when initialization, updates, or cleanup happen. Unity documents execution order and lifecycle callbacks, but exact behavior and available APIs are engine- and version-specific. Unity’s execution-order documentation is the place to check those details for the relevant version; do not assume its callback rules apply to another engine.

A practical way to keep a beginner project changeable
- Start with the game’s actual objects. Give each a simple class and clear responsibilities rather than designing a large framework in advance.
- Use inheritance for stable subtypes. Reconsider the hierarchy if unrelated objects need the same ability or new combinations require many subclasses.
- Move mix-and-match abilities toward composition. Add components when they remove real subclass or shared-root complexity.
- Keep responsibilities and dependencies visible. Split a class or introduce events when independent systems are difficult to change without touching one another.
- Check runtime behavior against the engine documentation. Verify time-step, execution-order, and lifecycle details for the engine and version you are using.
