Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I fix common JavaScript errors? Read the complete console message, inspect the cited code and its inputs, then identify whether the failure is a syntax problem, an unavailable name, an incompatible value, or an out-of-range input. The message is a clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis: browser wording varies, and the highlighted line can be downstream from the actual mistake.
How to diagnose a JavaScript error
- Read the full message. Note the error class, message, file and line, and stack information when available. Exact wording can vary between browsers.
- Inspect the source around the reported location. Check the complete expression and the values it uses. A parser or runtime may report where it noticed a problem, not the earlier character or operation that caused it.
- Reproduce the failure with the smallest relevant input. Reduce unrelated code so you can see which expression still triggers it.
- Inspect values immediately before the failing operation. Use a breakpoint and step through execution, or add targeted
console.log()calls. Confirm the actual type and shape instead of assuming a function returned the expected value. - Run a linter such as ESLint. A linter can catch invalid syntax and likely mistakes before execution.
- Change one cause at a time and rerun the same reproduction. Confirm the error is gone and the intended behavior still works.
JavaScript error objects have a name and a message. Both, along with the location and stack, help narrow the search; none necessarily explains the full cause by itself. MDN describes the JavaScript debugger and console techniques in its JavaScript debugging guide.
What does each common error tell you?
| Error | When it appears | What it suggests | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
SyntaxError |
When JavaScript tries to parse code | The code cannot be interpreted as valid syntax | Punctuation, expression structure, and whether the construct is valid in context |
ReferenceError |
While code is executing | A name is unavailable in the current scope or is read before it is initialized | Spelling, declaration, scope, and initialization order |
TypeError |
While code is executing | An operation was attempted with a value unsuitable for it | The operation and the value’s actual type or shape |
RangeError |
While code is executing | A value is outside an operation’s allowed range or set | The input against the operation’s accepted domain |
How do I fix SyntaxError: Unexpected token?
A parser encountered something it did not expect at that point. MDN defines it this way: “The SyntaxError object represents an error when trying to interpret syntactically invalid code.” The reported token can be near the problem without being the character that caused it; inspect the expression immediately before it as well as the marked location.
Check delimiters and the surrounding construct
Look for unmatched parentheses, brackets, or braces; misplaced commas or semicolons; missing colons in object properties or conditional expressions; and malformed calls, conditions, arrays, objects, or blocks. Match each opening delimiter to its closing partner, then check that the complete construct is valid in its context. A message about a missing ), ], }, or : is a reason to inspect nearby structure, not to insert punctuation blindly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check strings and lookalike punctuation
Code copied from formatted text may contain curly quotation marks or typographic dashes where JavaScript expects ordinary punctuation. Replace those characters with standard JavaScript characters, unless they are intended as text inside a properly quoted string. Also check for a missing quote or an unescaped line break in a string.
Check whether the syntax fits its context
A token can be valid in one construct and invalid in another. For example, a loop with malformed punctuation or a missing parenthesis can cause the parser to flag a later token. Review the whole statement rather than changing only the token named by the browser. See MDN’s JavaScript error reference for examples; exact message text is engine-dependent.

Why am I getting ReferenceError: x is not defined?
JavaScript cannot resolve the name x where the code tries to use it. Check that the identifier is spelled and capitalized consistently, that it has been declared, and that the declaration is accessible from the current scope.
Also check timing: a lexical declaration can be accessed before it has been initialized. Follow the execution path to confirm the declaration runs before the read. If the name is supposed to come from another module, script, or callback, verify that it is actually available in this scope when this line executes. MDN’s “x is not defined” reference covers this error and related cases.

What does Uncaught TypeError mean?
A TypeError means the code attempted an operation that does not fit the value it received. “Uncaught” means the error was not handled by code that caught it; it does not, on its own, identify the underlying cause. Find the operation named or implied by the message, then inspect the relevant value immediately before it runs.
- Calling a non-function: Check that the value being called is actually a function, and trace where it came from.
- Accessing a property on
nullorundefined: Find why the value is absent before accessing the property. Check whether data has loaded and whether the value is optional. - Iterating a non-iterable value: Inspect the value and confirm it has the iterable form the loop or method requires. Do not assume an API response is an array without checking it.
- Using a value with an unexpected shape: Inspect the full value and the operation’s expected input. The source may return a different type or structure than the code assumes.
MDN’s TypeError reference explains examples of operations receiving an unsuitable type.

What does a RangeError mean?
A RangeError signals that a value falls outside the range or set allowed by an operation. Validate inputs against that operation’s permitted values rather than treating the error as a general calculation failure.
- An array length must be valid for the array operation.
- Number-formatting methods accept only certain precision arguments.
- String normalization methods accept supported normalization forms.
Check the argument at the point of use, including values supplied by users or calculated elsewhere. MDN documents examples in its RangeError reference.

If you need a clean screenshot of a page while debugging a rendering issue, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. For example, save a screenshot of a page with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
