Microsoft’s System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tools are the supported first checks, but the filename is not identified in Microsoft’s guidance as a particular Windows component. The message may therefore belong to one application rather than to Windows itself. Record the complete error and the program that displays it, run DISM before SFC, and then repair or reinstall the identified application from its official vendor if Windows reports no protected-file problem.
What the comment.dll message means
A DLL is a library that a program loads for shared functions. “comment.dll is missing,” “comment.dll was not found,” and similar messages mean that the process requesting the library could not load it from an expected location. The message alone does not establish that the file belongs to Windows, that it is safe, or that it should be copied into a system folder.

Microsoft’s published DISM and SFC guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 does not identify comment.dll, its vendor, or whether it is a protected Windows component. Treat the filename as application-context dependent until you know which program is calling it. A program can fail at launch, or only when you open a particular feature, while the rest of Windows works normally.
- One program fails: the application’s installation, update, or private DLL set is the leading line of investigation.
- Several Windows functions fail: corrupted Windows components become more plausible, so use DISM and SFC first.
- The error started after an update or install: record what changed and include recent drivers or security software in later diagnostics.
Capture the details before changing anything
Write down the full message exactly, including any path, error code, or named executable. Also record:

- the application name and version that triggers the message;
- whether it appears when the application starts or only during a particular feature;
- your Windows edition, build number, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- when the problem began and whether Windows, the application, a driver, or security software changed immediately beforehand.
Check the application folder
Right-click the application shortcut, choose Open file location (or open the installation directory from the application’s properties), and look for the executable and its accompanying files. Do not copy a DLL from another computer or from a download site merely because its name matches. A file with the right name can be the wrong version, compiled for the wrong architecture, or malicious.
Check Event Viewer for the failing process
Press Windows, type Event Viewer, and open it. In Windows Logs > Application, look for an error at the time of the failure. The event may identify the executable, faulting module, or an application-specific error code. Use that information to identify the owner before selecting an application repair or reinstall.
Run Microsoft’s supported DISM and SFC sequence
These commands repair Windows component files; they are not a way to obtain an unidentified application DLL. Run them in the stated order from an elevated Command Prompt.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The title bar should indicate an administrator session.
2. Run DISM first
At the elevated prompt, enter this command and press Enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM checks the running Windows image and restores damaged components. Microsoft states that “DISM uses Windows Update as the source to provide the necessary files.” Leave the window open while it works. The duration depends on the computer and the amount of repair required; do not close the prompt because progress appears to pause.
3. Run SFC after DISM finishes
When DISM has completed, run:
sfc /scannowDo not start SFC until DISM has finished. Leave the Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft describes the command this way: “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” Interrupting the scan can leave you without a complete result.
4. Restart and test
Restart Windows after SFC reports its result, then open the program that produced the comment.dll message. Test the same action that originally failed rather than assuming that a successful command automatically repaired an application’s private files.
How to act on the DISM and SFC results

A “no integrity violations” result does not prove that comment.dll is harmless or that the application is correctly installed; it only narrows the problem away from the protected files SFC checks. Conversely, a repaired Windows component does not guarantee that an application’s own DLL set is complete.

Use installation media only when DISM cannot find repair files
Windows Update is DISM’s normal source. Do not move to installation media merely because the command takes time. Use this fallback when DISM explicitly reports that source files cannot be found.
Choose a matching source
- Use installation media that matches the installed Windows release, edition, language, architecture, and servicing level as closely as possible.
- A side-by-side Windows source on approved network or removable media can also be used.
- The source must contain the component files for the Windows image you are repairing; an unrelated ISO or another computer’s system folder is not a reliable substitute.
Supply the source to DISM
Mount the matching media and identify the correct image index for your edition. Then use Microsoft’s DISM /Source syntax with that source and the /LimitAccess option so DISM does not continue looking to Windows Update. The general form is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:<mounted-drive>:sourcesinstall.wim:<edition-index> /LimitAccessReplace the angle-bracketed values with the drive letter and edition index from your media; do not paste the brackets literally. If your media uses another supported image format, follow the corresponding Microsoft source syntax. After DISM completes successfully, reboot and run sfc /scannow again. Installation media is an advanced fallback, not a reason to download a loose comment.dll.

Repair the application that triggers the error
If the message appears only with one program, identify that program before choosing a download. Capture its exact name and version, then use the vendor’s own installer or support instructions.

Use the program’s built-in repair or update
Many desktop installers provide a Repair, Modify, or Check for updates option. Run it from the original installer or the application’s documented maintenance utility. A repair can restore files without removing user data, but the available options depend on the vendor.
Repair from Windows settings when the option exists
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application’s menu, and look for Advanced options and Repair. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the application, and check for the same option. Not every traditional desktop program exposes these controls; use the vendor’s installer when they are absent.
Reinstall from the official vendor
If repair and updating do not restore the file, uninstall the affected application using its documented process, restart Windows, and install a current package obtained from the application’s official vendor. Verify that the package matches your Windows architecture and edition. Back up application data and record license or activation details before uninstalling. Reinstalling is appropriate only after you know which application owns the missing file; it is not a general remedy for an unidentified DLL message.

Launch the program and repeat the operation that failed. If the message changes, capture the new text rather than reverting to a random DLL download. A new error can indicate a second missing dependency or an application-specific configuration problem that the vendor must address.

Note the exact date and change that preceded the first failure. Use Windows Update’s troubleshooting controls for an update-related start, perform a clean restart to rule out a conflicting startup service, and review recently installed drivers or security software as possible changes. Keep the DISM/SFC sequence as the supported Windows-file check; these additional diagnostics help determine what changed when Windows files are intact.
If security software quarantined a file, review its event history and follow the product’s documented restore or support process rather than downloading a replacement. If you suspect tampering, run a scan with your existing trusted security software. A DLL name by itself is not proof of malware, and no article can establish the file’s safety without the owning application, path, and provenance.

What not to do
- Do not use third-party DLL download sites. The file may be an incompatible version, the wrong architecture, or unsafe.
- Do not copy a DLL from another PC. Matching the filename does not match its build, dependencies, or licensing.
- Do not assume the name proves a Windows origin. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not identify
comment.dllas a protected Windows file. - Do not rely on unsupported registry-cleaner promises. Registry changes cannot identify the legitimate owner of an unknown DLL or supply the correct application binary.
- Do not skip DISM when SFC cannot repair files. DISM is the preceding repair step for the Windows component store.
When to contact the application vendor or Microsoft support
Contact the application vendor when the failure is limited to its program, reinstalling its official package does not restore the file, or Event Viewer names a component that the vendor must supply. Include the application version, Windows build, full error text, installation path, and the DISM/SFC results. Seek Microsoft support for persistent Windows integrity errors, repeated DISM source failures with matching media, or broader operating-system failures. Providing the command output and exact build information prevents a support technician from treating an application DLL as a Windows component without evidence.
