For your first game, buy a reasonably priced Commander preconstructed deck (precon). It is a legal, ready-to-play 100-card deck, so you can shuffle up without selecting 99 cards, checking color identity, or waiting for multiple shipments. Build from singles instead when you already know the commander or strategy, own a collection that covers lands and staples, or need precise control over budget and power level. Neither route is always cheaper; the answer depends on the exact product, decklist, prices in your country, and cards you already own.
What a Commander deck must contain
The 100-card structure
Commander is normally played as a four-player format. Your deck has one commander card and 99 cards in the main deck, for 100 cards total. Except for basic lands, cards are normally singleton: you may include only one copy of a card with a particular name. The commander and the deck together must obey the commander’s color identity, which includes the mana symbols in its rules text and other characteristics. A card outside that identity is illegal even if it would otherwise support your strategy.

The commander begins in the command zone, while the other 99 cards are shuffled into your library. A preconstructed deck is not a special casual exception; it is a complete Commander-legal list. EDHREC describes the same 100-card singleton structure and confirms that preconstructed decks are legal Commander decks.

What “precon” means
A precon is a sealed, factory-assembled deck sold as one product. Wizards of the Coast describes its Foundations Commander products this way: “Each Foundations Commander deck contains a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck.” The Foundations Commander decks released on October 2, 2026, with preorders through local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon and other retailers. Check the actual package and decklist for the product you are considering; release dates, contents and availability differ by set and region.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“Ready to play” means you still need a commander-legal playgroup, sleeves if you want protection, and any tokens or accessories the deck requires. It does not mean every precon has the same power level or that no upgrades are useful.
Cost: compare the exact precon with the exact singles list
Why there is no universal cheaper option
A sealed deck has a price for the cards, assembly, packaging and the convenience of receiving one playable list. A singles build prices every card separately and may avoid cards you do not want. The result changes with reprints, scarcity, release timing, seller inventory, shipping, taxes, currency and your existing collection.
TCGplayer reported selected Commander product market prices of $65.17, $190.87 and $86.24 in its May 27, 2026 buying guide. Those are snapshots for the products and market conditions covered by that guide, not a price range that applies to every precon. The Pod Companion reported a $104 median singles value across its tracked paper Commander precon corpus on October 18, 2026. Its methodology notes that the exact set, collector number and finish matter; a name-only lookup can price the wrong printing.

Why singles value is not the same as money back
A deck can contain cards whose individual prices add up to more than the sealed product. That does not mean you will recover that total. Selling or trading roughly 100 cards takes time, requires accurate condition and printing checks, and can involve marketplace fees, postage and unsold inventory. A card’s theoretical singles value is therefore different from the cash value a buyer realizes.
When singles can cost less
- You already own basic lands, dual lands, ramp, removal or other staples.
- You need only a small set of expensive cards rather than an entire sealed list.
- You can consolidate an order with one seller and avoid duplicated shipping.
- You are replacing cards you would immediately cut from a precon.
When singles can cost more
- The strategy requires many scarce or recently popular cards.
- Cards are split among several sellers, creating multiple shipping charges.
- You choose premium finishes, foreign-language printings or specific collector numbers.
- You underestimate the cost of lands, protection, card draw and interaction needed to make the list function.
A practical price worksheet
- Choose the exact precon name, edition and region. Record the seller, currency, condition and access date.
- For a singles build, export the exact 99-card list and commander from your deckbuilding tool.
- Match each card by set code, collector number and finish, not merely by card name.
- Add card prices, shipping, taxes and any accessories you need. Keep sealed and singles totals in the same currency.
- Subtract cards you already own only if they are in usable condition and legal for the intended deck.
- Compare the total with the cost of a precon plus the upgrades you would actually buy during the first month.
This comparison answers “Is a precon worth it?” for your purchase rather than for the market in general.

Customization: singles give control; precons give a functioning starting shell
What you control with singles
Building from singles lets every slot serve a deliberate purpose. You can select the commander, mechanical theme, mana curve, land count, removal suite, interaction density, card draw, win condition, budget ceiling and preferred printings. It is the better fit when you already know that you want a particular tribe, combo, graveyard plan, tokens strategy or power target.
TCGplayer recommends deciding whether you will use cards you already own or buy singles, then using online deckbuilding tools and EDHREC to research a commander or mechanical theme. Use those tools as starting points, not as an instruction to copy a list blindly: check color identity, current legality, prices and the expectations of your group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat a precon provides
A precon supplies a coherent shell with lands, mana acceleration, threats, answers and a commander selected by the product designer. You can learn how the deck draws cards, spends mana and closes games before changing it. That baseline makes later swaps easier to evaluate: you know which cards felt weak, which effects were missing and which cards repeatedly helped you win.
Customization starts after purchase. You can replace a few cards at a time, retain the original decklist for reference and stop upgrading when the deck fits your group. The tradeoff is that the initial list includes cards you may never choose for a custom build.
Convenience and learning curve
Precon workflow
- Choose a commander or theme that sounds enjoyable and confirm the advertised power level with your group.
- Buy one sealed deck from a seller showing the correct edition and language.
- Open the deck, verify the commander, main-deck count, tokens and any included accessories against the printed list.
- Sleeve the cards, read the commander and key cards, and play a low-stakes game before making changes.
- Write down cards that were dead, effects you lacked and turns where the deck could not spend its mana.
This is normally the fastest route to a first game: one purchase, one list and minimal sourcing. It also gives a playgroup a concrete baseline for discussing upgrades.

Singles workflow
- Define the commander, theme, budget, preferred power level and the date by which you want to play.
- Build a draft 99-card list plus commander in a deckbuilding tool.
- Check every card’s color identity and confirm the list has exactly 100 cards including the commander.
- Review the mana base, ramp, card draw, removal, protection and win conditions before ordering.
- Match printings and finishes, compare sellers, and calculate shipping and taxes.
- Place orders, inspect the cards on arrival, sleeve them and goldfish or play-test the list.
- Record changes rather than buying randomly; each replacement should solve a problem you observed.
This route offers less waste when the plan is already clear, but it requires more decisions and creates more opportunities for a legality or sourcing mistake.

Power level and playgroup fit
A legal deck can still be a poor fit for a particular table. Before buying, ask what your group considers an appropriate speed, interaction level and budget. EDHREC documents bracket labels including Exhibition, Core, Upgraded, Optimized and cEDH. The names are useful conversation starters, but your local group may apply them differently.
- Ask about expectations: Are fast combos, mass land destruction, proxies or expensive staples acceptable?
- Describe your plan: Tell the group whether the deck is a stock precon, lightly upgraded or built for a specific high-power target.
- Check the commander: A commander with a focused engine may play much stronger after only a few swaps.
- Use the same yardstick: Compare interaction, speed and consistency, not only the product label or the price of individual cards.
A carefully selected precon can fit a relaxed table, while a singles list may be the only practical way to hit a narrow optimized target. Conversely, a first-time builder can accidentally create a list that is much stronger or weaker than intended by copying expensive staples without balancing the deck.
Should you buy a precon for your first Commander deck?
Choose a precon when these statements describe you
- You want to play tonight or at your next store event.
- You are still learning Commander rules, deck construction or the terminology of ramp, draw and interaction.
- You do not yet have a favorite commander.
- You want a complete baseline before spending money on upgrades.
- You prefer one checkout and one shipment over assembling dozens of listings.
A precon reduces the number of ways a first purchase can go wrong. It is not automatically the strongest or cheapest option, but it is usually the simplest learning tool.
Choose singles when these statements describe you
- You already know the commander, tribe or mechanical theme you want.
- You own a substantial collection and can supply lands, staples and interaction.
- You need a defined budget or exact power bracket.
- You care about particular printings, languages or finishes.
- You would remove many cards from a precon immediately.
Singles are especially efficient when you can reuse cards across several decks. Count only cards that are genuinely available for this build; cards locked in another deck are not a current saving unless you are willing to move them.

Can you upgrade a precon instead of buying 100 cards?
Yes. Upgrading is a middle path: the precon supplies the legal shell, while singles target the weaknesses you identify. Start with a small change set rather than replacing half the deck at once.
A controlled upgrade sequence
- Play the stock list first. Learn which cards are useful and which remain stranded in your hand.
- Identify one problem. Examples include too few lands, weak card draw, insufficient removal or a commander that is hard to protect.
- Buy a matching solution. Replace a card that performs the same broad role, so the deck’s structure remains intact.
- Track each swap. Note the date, cost and reason; this prevents duplicate purchases and reveals whether the change helped.
- Recheck the table fit. A handful of efficient upgrades can move a deck into a different power band.
This approach spreads spending over time and preserves the precon’s original list as a reference. It is less efficient than singles if you already know every card you want, but it is safer for learning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a named precon with its singles equivalent
When you are deciding between one particular sealed deck and a custom list, make the comparison reproducible. Record the following information on the same day:
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product or list | Exact set, deck name, commander and 99-card list | Different printings and deck versions can contain different cards |
| Seller and region | Marketplace or store, country, currency and access date | Availability, shipping and taxes vary by geography |
| Condition | Near-mint, played or other stated condition | Condition changes singles prices and resale assumptions |
| Finish and language | Nonfoil, foil, etched or foreign-language printing | Finish and language can materially change the price |
| Delivered total | Cards plus shipping, tax and accessories | A low card subtotal can become expensive after checkout |
Do not compare a sealed product’s delivered price with a singles subtotal that excludes shipping, or compare a standard printing with a premium finish. If a card’s exact version is not stated, mark the value as not stated rather than assuming the cheapest or most expensive printing.

Treating the median singles value as resale cash
The $104 median reported by The Pod Companion is a tracked value estimate, not a guaranteed payout. Selling involves labor, fees, postage and cards that may not find buyers.
Counting the wrong printing
Use set code, collector number and finish. A name-only lookup can price a different version from the one in the box.
Ignoring the mana base
New builders often price exciting spells first and discover later that lands, ramp and card draw consume a large share of the budget. Price the complete list, not only its headline cards.

Check mana symbols in rules text and other color-identity rules before ordering. A card that looks thematically perfect is still illegal if it falls outside the commander’s identity.
Upgrading without telling the pod
Replacing a few cards is normal, but a focused upgrade package can change how quickly the deck wins. Explain the changes and agree on expectations before the game.
Ordering from too many sellers
Several low card prices can become an expensive delivered order. Compare the full checkout total and the value of receiving everything in one shipment.
Decision table
| Your situation | Better starting path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First Commander deck and you want to play tonight | Precon | Ready-to-play 100-card product with minimal sourcing |
| You have a favorite commander or narrow theme | Singles | Every slot can support the plan |
| You own a large collection | Singles, or precon plus upgrades | Existing lands, staples and interaction reduce incremental cost |
| You want to learn deck construction | Precon first, then upgrade | A functioning baseline makes each change easier to evaluate |
| You need a specific power bracket | Singles, or a carefully selected precon | Exact tuning is easier when you control every slot |
| You are comparing value for one particular card | Buy the single | You avoid paying for 99 cards you do not want |
Bottom-line recommendation
Buy a precon for speed, a first play experience and a reliable way to learn Commander. Build from singles when your commander, strategy, collection or power target is already defined. If you are undecided, the lowest-risk route is a precon followed by targeted upgrades: it gives you a legal deck now without committing you to buying 100 individually selected cards before you know what you enjoy.
