Color Ereader vs. Black-and-White Ereader: Which Should You Buy?

Choose a black-and-white ereader if you mostly read novels, articles, and other text. Consider a color ereader if your books regularly contain color artwork or you want color-coded highlights and annotations. Color appears only where the ebook page includes it; a color screen does not turn monochrome illustrations into color.

Choose by what you read and how you use your ereader

Your reading habit Better starting point Why
Mostly novels, articles, or other text Black-and-white Color adds little to pages that contain no color. Compare the exact models’ resolution and local prices.
Comics or illustrated books with color source pages Color Color can display on pages designed with it; appearance depends on the screen and content.
Color-coded highlights, handwritten notes, or notebooks A model that supports those functions For example, Kobo Libra Colour supports color highlights and handwritten annotations with the separately sold Kobo Stylus 2. Compatibility is model-specific.
Unsure or price-sensitive Compare specific models at current local prices A single manufacturer-site price snapshot is not a general measure of the color premium.

Before buying for comics or illustrated nonfiction, check a sample of the actual ebook editions you plan to read. A printed book may be in color while its ebook edition is not, and a comic can have a color cover but monochrome interior art. Kobo explains that its color screen displays color only on pages designed for it and does not add color to black-and-white pages: Kobo’s explanation of the color screen.

What changes on a color E Ink screen?

Color depends on the page

A color display can show color in supported images, covers, diagrams, or other page elements that were created in color. It cannot colorize grayscale pages. Check the ebook file itself rather than assuming that every page of a title will benefit.

Resolution can vary by content on one device

On the 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo specifies 300 PPI for black-and-white content and 150 PPI for color content. Those are specifications for that model, not a rule for every color ereader. The difference is relevant if you often read small text or detailed color illustrations; compare the resolution figures for the exact devices you are considering. See the Kobo Libra Colour specifications and its official factsheet.

Do not assume tablet-like color or a universal comfort difference

Color E Ink and monochrome E Ink are different display implementations, but the available product specifications do not establish a market-wide verdict on eye comfort or real-world color performance. Assess a particular screen in person if color appearance or reading comfort is decisive for you; vendor specifications alone cannot settle that comparison.

A same-brand comparison: Kobo Clara Colour and Clara BW

Kobo’s US catalogue provides a useful example of comparing two similarly sized readers from one brand. Its listing describes both the Clara Colour and Clara BW as 6-inch, 16 GB models, but with different display technologies. The prices below were shown on Kobo’s US catalogue when accessed on October 4, 2026; they are a dated US snapshot, not guaranteed current or applicable in other regions.

When color highlighting and handwriting matter

Color can be useful even when you are not reading comics. On the Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo supports color highlights and handwritten annotations with the Kobo Stylus 2, which is sold separately. Do not assume that a stylus or these functions work with every color ereader: check the exact model and accessory compatibility before purchasing. Details are on the Libra Colour product page and in Kobo’s April 10, 2024 launch announcement.

Compare the whole device, not just its screen label

Color versus black-and-white is one decision among several. For a concrete example, Kobo lists the Libra Colour as a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 model with 1264 × 1680 pixels, 32 GB storage, a weight of 199.5 g, and IPX8 water resistance rated up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. Those details describe the Libra Colour specifically; do not generalize them to other ereaders.

Kobo also advertises up to 40 days of battery life for the Libra Colour under a stated test pattern: 30 minutes of reading per day, front light at 30%, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off. This is a manufacturer usage scenario, not a real-world guarantee or a head-to-head battery comparison with a monochrome model. Consult the product specifications for the model you intend to buy.

  • Content: Check whether your actual ebooks contain color pages, not just color covers.
  • Resolution: Compare black-and-white and color resolution where the manufacturer reports them separately.
  • Handling: Compare screen size, weight, controls, and ergonomics against how and where you read.
  • Annotations: Verify stylus support, included features, and the separate accessory cost for the specific model.
  • Library and store access: Confirm regional availability and compatibility with your preferred store or public library. Kobo notes that OverDrive/Libby availability depends on country and library on its Libra Colour page.
  • Price: Check the current price in your region rather than relying on a past launch price or another country’s listing.
