A college basketball coach’s contract can treat a firing for cause very differently from a school’s decision to terminate without cause. It may also require the coach to pay the school if the coach leaves early for another job. The contract’s definitions, payment direction, trigger, and conditions—not the word “buyout” alone—determine what is owed.
What is the difference between termination for cause and without cause?
These are separate contractual routes, not interchangeable descriptions of a coach being fired. A for-cause clause defines conduct or circumstances that allow a school to end employment under specified procedures and consequences. A without-cause clause may let the school end the agreement without proving a defined breach, while requiring a specified payment to the coach.

Contracts can also set damages payable by the coach if the coach resigns or accepts another job before the term ends. That is a different obligation from money the school may owe after ending the coach’s employment. Start by identifying who terminates, which clause applies, and who the clause requires to pay.

The agreement controls what qualifies as cause and what follows. It may include notice and an opportunity to remedy a breach; it may also specify what happens to future salary, earned compensation, benefits, or vested retirement amounts. A cause firing does not, by itself, answer every final-pay question.

Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg agreement
The Nebraska agreement calls its standard “Adequate Cause.” Listed grounds include a serious breach of material duties and a serious, unreasonable refusal to perform material duties. For those specified grounds, the contract allows five business days after written notice to remedy. It also incorporates an athletics policy and provides for discipline, suspension, or termination under the agreement and policy. The cause provision forfeits specified future compensation while preserving final base salary for work performed and vested retirement compensation. Read the agreement.
These are terms of this agreement, not a universal definition of cause. The precise language, incorporated policies, procedures, and facts matter in any individual case.
UCLA’s Mick Cronin agreement copy
The agreement copy separately allows Cronin to terminate for cause after written notice specifying significant or repetitive material breaches and at least 60 days for the university to cure. The stated university policy and Chancellor determine whether the cure is sufficient. This describes the coach’s contractual route to terminate, not a rule governing how every school may fire a coach. Review the contract copy.

When does a school owe a coach a buyout?
A school-to-coach buyout commonly refers to a contractually specified payment following the school’s termination without cause. The trigger and amount are contract-specific; do not treat a reported figure as a market rate or assume it applies to a for-cause termination.
UCLA’s university-without-cause schedule
The UCLA contract copy lists the following liquidated-damages schedule for university termination without cause. The first two year labels include their stated end dates; the copy identifies later years by contract year only.
| Contract period | University payment listed |
|---|---|
| Contract Year 1, through March 31, 2026 | $22.5 million |
| Contract Year 2, through March 31, 2027 | $18 million |
| Contract Year 3 | $13.5 million |
| Contract Year 4 | $9 million |
| Contract Year 5 | $4.5 million |
The agreement provides for substantially equal monthly installments over the remaining term and makes payment subject to mitigation by compensation earned through subsequent employment. These are amounts in the contract copy, not an estimate of current market practice. Because this copy is hosted on Scribd, verify the signed, current university agreement before relying on the figures.

When might the coach owe the school?
A coach-side buyout is a separate obligation, usually tied to early resignation or accepting another job during the contract term. A school’s obligation to pay its coach and a coach’s obligation to pay the school should never be collapsed into one undirected “buyout” figure.
UCLA’s coach-side schedule
The same UCLA contract copy lists these amounts for the coach’s early termination:
| Contract year | Coach payment listed |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | $15 million |
| Year 2 | $12 million |
| Year 3 | $8 million |
| Year 4 | $6 million |
| Year 5 | $4 million |
The agreement’s distinct schedules illustrate why the amount alone is not enough: the applicable party, event, contract year, and payment conditions all matter.
Nebraska’s resignation provision
The Hoiberg agreement says its coach liquidated damages do not apply to a resignation for reasons other than acceptance of other Basketball Employment during the term, subject to a separately identified provision. In other words, the contract ties this particular payment obligation to a specified trigger and exception; it does not establish a general rule for coaches who resign.
An assistant-coach illustration
A North Carolina Athletics assistant-coach agreement uses another structure: early-resignation damages are 50% of annualized base salary, prorated for the remaining appointment term under the agreement’s stated dates. It also provides an exception if the university fails to pay amounts due and does not cure after written notice. This is an illustration of contract variation, not a head-coach comparison or market benchmark. See the assistant-coach agreement.

Mitigation and later earnings
Mitigation can reduce the amount ultimately paid if the coach earns compensation from subsequent employment. UCLA’s university-without-cause schedule is expressly subject to that kind of mitigation. A contract may also address offsets, reporting, and how later earnings are calculated; check the exact wording rather than assuming every buyout is paid in full regardless of new employment.
North Carolina system approval example
University of North Carolina System Policy 1100.3 says head-coach and athletic-director employment contracts longer than one year require approval by the institution’s Board of Trustees. The policy also calls for additional approval review for specified terms, including certain institutional buyouts exceeding remaining base salary plus earned or vested bonuses or deferred compensation, waivers of mitigation, and replacement of outside income. This is a system-specific approval framework, not a nationwide requirement. Read UNC System Policy 1100.3.
How to compare two coach contracts
Compare the agreements clause by clause, using the same questions for each. A single headline buyout amount can conceal different triggers, payers, and conditions.
- Who can terminate, and under which route? Separate cause termination, termination without cause, and coach resignation.
- What counts as cause? Look for defined grounds, notice requirements, investigation or review steps, cure periods, and incorporated policies.
- Who owes liquidated damages, and what triggers them? Record whether the school or coach pays, and whether the trigger is firing without cause, resignation, or acceptance of another job.
- How is the amount calculated and paid? Check the applicable date or contract year, remaining term, installment schedule, and any exceptions.
- What happens to other compensation? Distinguish future salary from salary already earned, bonuses, benefits, and vested retirement compensation.
- Do mitigation or offsets apply? Check how later employment income affects payments and whether reporting or offset terms appear.
- Which policies, approvals, and governing terms apply? Review incorporated institutional policies, approval requirements, amendments, and governing law.
- Is this the signed, current agreement? A hosted copy or summary may not reflect later amendments or the operative version.
What a buyout figure does—and does not—tell you
A contract’s use of the term “liquidated damages” states how the parties characterize the payment; it is not, by itself, a court ruling that the clause is enforceable. The agreements discussed here do not establish a universal legal outcome for disputes. Assessing a particular termination requires the full operative agreement, any incorporated policies, applicable law, and the facts.
