Coinbase Exchange and Deribit are not interchangeable platforms, and their headline fees are not a like-for-like comparison. Coinbase Exchange is Coinbase’s spot venue; Deribit is a derivatives-focused platform with crypto options, futures and perpetuals, as well as spot markets. Since October 1, 2026, Deribit infrastructure has also powered the migrated Coinbase International Exchange derivatives experience. The right choice depends on the specific instrument, your access path and eligibility, and the full cost of trading it.
This comparison reflects official product and fee information checked on October 7, 2026. Listings, fees, rollout status and jurisdictional access can change.

What “Coinbase vs. Deribit” means after the integration
Coinbase completed the integration of Coinbase International Exchange derivatives infrastructure with Deribit on October 1, 2026, according to Coinbase’s integration overview and its institutional FAQs. That change does not make Coinbase Exchange and Deribit a single spot venue, nor does it mean every Coinbase derivatives product is accessed through Deribit directly.
- Coinbase Exchange: Coinbase’s spot exchange, with its own order book and published spot fee schedule.
- Coinbase app or website: Coinbase says retail users continue to access perpetuals through the familiar app or website, with Deribit infrastructure behind the migrated derivatives experience.
- Deribit: Existing Deribit customers continue using Deribit’s own platform and its listed products and fee schedule.
- Coinbase International Exchange institutional accounts: Coinbase says accounts, positions and balances migrated to the combined derivatives platform. Institutional API users should consult Coinbase’s migration guidance for the new Deribit-powered gateway and endpoint.
Coinbase’s integration materials also describe Deribit dated futures for eligible users and options access rolling out to eligible users. Coinbase announced that 125+ additional perpetual contracts are being added to Deribit; this is the company’s announced expansion, not an independently audited count of markets currently available to every account. Products: where the platforms differ
Coinbase Exchange spot
Coinbase Exchange is the relevant Coinbase venue when the need is spot trading on Coinbase’s order book and its Exchange fee schedule. Those fees do not describe every product in the Coinbase app, and they should not be treated as the price of Coinbase app perpetuals.

Fees: compare the same product and order type
The figures below are published schedule rates, not a personalized estimate of total trading cost. Deribit’s Standard rates and Coinbase Exchange’s standard non-Liquidity-Program rates refer to different products and use different tier systems.
| Venue and product | Published fee or range | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Deribit perpetuals and futures | 1.5 bps maker / 3.5 bps taker | Deribit Standard rate; fee page updated September 25, 2026. |
| Deribit options | 3 bps maker / 3 bps taker; capped at 12.5% of premium | Deribit Standard rate; check expiry and settlement charges as well. |
| Spot pairs routed through Deribit to Coinbase Exchange liquidity | 2 bps maker / 5 bps taker | Deribit’s routed-spot fee treatment. |
| Native Deribit spot-book pairs | 0% maker / 0% taker | Deribit’s published fee treatment for native spot pairs; this does not apply to routed pairs. |
| Coinbase Exchange spot, $0K–$10K volume tier | 40 bps maker / 60 bps taker | Coinbase Exchange standard fee table outside the Liquidity Program. |
| Coinbase Exchange spot, $400M+ volume tier | 0 bps maker / 4 bps taker | Coinbase Exchange standard fee table outside the Liquidity Program. |
One basis point (bps) is 0.01%. Coinbase’s Exchange schedule has additional volume tiers between the two endpoints shown above. It also lists separate stable-pair taker pricing and a 0.00% maker fee on stablepairs; stablepair classification and peg behavior matter when applying those rates. Consult the current Coinbase Exchange fees page for the full schedule and applicable pair classifications.

What the headline rates leave out
Deribit rates are tiered by equity or rolling 30-day volume. For example, Deribit’s published VIP 1 qualification is either $100,000 USDC equity or $250,000 total equity. Futures and options volume thresholds are separate, but Deribit says the highest VIP level achieved in either product category applies to both; spot volume does not count toward those volume thresholds. VIP rates therefore differ from the Standard rates in the table. Check the current Deribit fee schedule for the tier and product you use.

A limit order is not automatically a maker order: whether it adds or removes liquidity depends on how it executes. Derivatives costs can also include funding, delivery or expiry settlement, and liquidation charges. Deribit lists an additional 1% total liquidation fee for BTC, ETH and USDC futures and perpetuals, and caps total options liquidation fees at 25% of option value. Withdrawal charges vary by currency and network; Deribit says deposits and transfers between subaccounts are free, while third-party deposit services may charge.

Who each platform or access path may suit
Choose Coinbase Exchange when your focus is Coinbase spot trading
- You specifically want Coinbase Exchange spot markets and its order-book fee tiers.
- You are comparing spot execution costs and can use your own volume tier and pair classification to check the applicable fee.
- You understand that the Coinbase Exchange spot schedule does not establish the fees for Coinbase app derivatives.
Consider Deribit for its listed crypto derivatives
- You need Deribit-listed crypto options, inverse or USDC-settled derivatives, or DVOL futures.
- You want to compare Deribit’s product-specific fees and account tiers against the exact contracts you trade.
- You are comfortable checking logged-in availability and factoring in funding, settlement, liquidation and withdrawal costs where applicable.
Use the Coinbase app path if you are an eligible Coinbase perpetuals customer
Coinbase says the familiar app and web workflow remains, while Deribit infrastructure powers the migrated perpetuals experience. Check the products, fees and market information shown in your own account rather than assuming the Coinbase Exchange spot schedule applies.
Check migration details if you use institutional access or APIs
Coinbase says International Exchange institutional accounts migrated to the combined platform and API users need the new Deribit-powered gateway. Confirm the applicable endpoint, credentials, market-data flow and migration requirements in Coinbase’s institutional integration FAQs.
Quick Recap
How to make a useful cost comparison
- Name the exact instrument and venue. Distinguish Coinbase Exchange spot from Coinbase app perpetuals, Deribit-native spot, Deribit-routed spot, and Deribit options or futures.
- Confirm eligibility and listing. Verify that the product is available to your account and jurisdiction; announced additions and phased rollouts do not establish access for every user.
- Apply the correct fee tier and order behavior. Check maker versus taker treatment, your applicable volume or equity tier, pair classification and, for options, the premium cap.
- Add costs beyond the trade fee. For derivatives, check funding, delivery or expiry settlement, and liquidation terms. For withdrawals, check the currency and network.
- Compare the workflow you will actually use. Retail app access, Deribit’s own interface, Coinbase Exchange spot, and institutional API access are distinct paths even where infrastructure is integrated.
