Short answer: Coinbase’s prediction-market contracts are not a separate Coinbase exchange at launch. Coinbase provides the app interface, account and funding experience, while Kalshi supplies the market flow and determines settlement under the rules for each contract. The same earnings headline can therefore produce different results on two venues if the wording, source of truth, timing window or correction policy differs. Treat the displayed price as a market-implied probability—not a guarantee—and compare rules, liquidity, fees, settlement, custody and eligibility before trading.
What Coinbase earnings contracts actually are
Coinbase Help states that “Prediction markets on Coinbase are operated by Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated exchange.” Coinbase’s launch announcement likewise said, “All market flow will come from Kalshi at launch.” In practical terms, Coinbase is the front end and account layer; Kalshi is the underlying event-contract venue whose market rules govern the contract.

This arrangement matters when you are evaluating an earnings market. A contract visible in the Coinbase app is not settled by whichever price Coinbase displays, nor by a Coinbase employee’s interpretation of a company announcement. Coinbase says Kalshi determines the final result from the source of truth specified in the market’s contract rules, “not the price shown on Coinbase or any third-party app.” The operative document is the named market’s rule page.

How an earnings contract works
Binary payout and implied probability
A typical event contract has a specified outcome and a fixed payout if that outcome occurs. A Federal Reserve paper describes Kalshi contracts as one-dollar securities that pay when the defined outcome occurs and explains how prices can be used to construct risk-neutral probability distributions for macro events. If a binary contract trades at 63 cents, traders are collectively pricing roughly a 63% chance of the stated outcome before fees and other trading effects. It is not a promise that the outcome has a 63% chance, and it is not a guaranteed return.
The payout is tied to the contract’s wording, not to a broad impression of whether an earnings call was “good” or “bad.” A market could ask about a reported figure, a year-over-year change, a company’s guidance, or an event occurring inside a specific time window. Only the condition written in the contract is eligible for payment.
Trading before expiry
Before expiry, the market price can move as traders update their expectations. You may exit by selling while trading is open, but an attractive screen price is not the same as guaranteed execution: the available quantity, bid-ask spread and order-book depth determine what you can actually receive. Once the contract expires, Coinbase says it cannot be sold. The remaining process is determination of the official result and crediting of any payout according to the rules.

Every contract should identify the source that decides the outcome: for example, a specified company filing, a particular earnings release, an exchange-reported value or another named publication. It should also state the observation period, the deadline, how revisions are handled and what happens if the source is delayed, corrected or unavailable. Those details are more important than the company name in the headline.

Why two venues can settle a similar earnings question differently
“Did Company X beat earnings?” is not a complete contract description. Two venues may use similar headlines while defining different measurable events. Compare these elements line by line:
| Contract element | Questions to ask | Why it can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Metric | GAAP earnings, adjusted earnings, EPS, revenue, margin or guidance? | A company can beat one measure and miss another. |
| Comparator | Analyst consensus, a prior quarter, a prior year or a stated threshold? | The same reported number can be a beat under one comparator and a miss under another. |
| Source of truth | Which filing, release, transcript, exchange or official page is controlling? | Unofficial summaries, news reports or a platform’s displayed price do not override the named source. |
| Timing window | What exact date, time zone and cutoff define the event? | An announcement before or after the cutoff can fall into different contracts. |
| Corrections | Can the source revise a figure, and which version is used? | A later correction may affect one contract if its rules permit it and another if they do not. |
| Settlement procedure | Who confirms the result and how are disputes or unavailable data handled? | Different procedures can produce different final outcomes even with similar text. |
Read the full rules on each venue before treating prices as directly comparable. A market that looks like a duplicate may be measuring a different event.
Coinbase versus Kalshi: what is actually different?
| Factor | Coinbase prediction markets | Kalshi direct market |
|---|---|---|
| Market flow | Coinbase said all market flow would come from Kalshi at launch. | Kalshi is the underlying exchange where those contracts are operated. |
| Interface and account | Coinbase app, Coinbase account and integrated funding/portfolio experience. | Kalshi’s own account, funding and trading interface. |
| Contract rules | Kalshi’s contract rules determine the official result. | Kalshi’s contract rules determine the official result. |
| Price display | Coinbase says prices reflect recent market activity; the display is not the settlement authority. | Prices come from trading in the Kalshi market. |
| Trading window | Coinbase documentation says you can buy and sell before expiry, not after expiry. | Check the individual Kalshi market for its trading close and settlement terms. |
| Post-settlement balance | After confirmation, earnings become available in the Prediction Markets USD balance and then move through Coinbase’s account workflow. | Check Kalshi’s stated process for when a settled balance is available and withdrawable. |
| Fees | A current venue fee schedule and any Coinbase transaction charge must be checked before trading; no stable fee number is established here. | Check the current Kalshi fee schedule for the specific account and transaction. |
For a user already holding funds on Coinbase, the integrated workflow may be simpler. That convenience should not be mistaken for a different settlement rule, a better price or a lower fee. If you want to compare execution, place the same hypothetical order size against each venue’s live bid, offer and available depth rather than comparing headline prices alone.

How to compare Coinbase, Kalshi and other prediction markets
1. Start with the rule page, not the headline
Copy the exact outcome, source, time window and correction language into your notes. If you cannot explain in one sentence what evidence will trigger a payout, you are not ready to compare the market with another venue.

2. Check liquidity and execution
- Spread: The gap between the best bid and offer is an immediate trading cost.
- Depth: A displayed price may apply to a small quantity. Larger orders can fill at several prices.
- Order types: Confirm whether the venue supports the order type you intend to use and what happens to an unfilled order.
- Exit ability: Verify the final trading time and remember that an expired contract cannot be sold through Coinbase.
Liquidity can differ by venue, contract and time of day. A theoretically attractive probability is of limited use if you cannot enter or exit near that price.
3. Calculate the complete cost
Do not assume that a displayed price is your all-in cost. Check the current trading fee, any settlement or withdrawal charge, the spread and—on Coinbase—any venue-specific Coinbase transaction charge. The reviewed official material does not establish a stable fee number, so a fee quoted from an old article may be wrong for your account, jurisdiction or date.
4. Compare custody and settlement timing
Ask who records the official outcome, when the result is confirmed, where the payout first appears and when it can be withdrawn. Coinbase says settled earnings first become available in the Prediction Markets USD balance and then transfer through its account workflow. The documentation does not promise a universal withdrawal time; check the market and account status rather than assuming immediate availability.

Availability depends on jurisdiction, account status and the product offered at the time you sign in. Coinbase Financial Markets identifies itself as an NFA-registered futures commission merchant. Kalshi describes its exchange as CFTC-regulated, and CFTC materials discuss federally regulated event-contract venues and their transparency obligations. Those labels do not mean every contract is available to every person or that losses are protected like a bank deposit. Review the eligibility notice and applicable disclosures for your location.

6. Test whether the contracts are genuinely comparable
Only compare probabilities after confirming that the measured event, source, timing and correction policy match. If one venue uses a company’s official release and another uses a consensus data provider, a five-point price difference may reflect different contracts rather than an arbitrage opportunity.
Step-by-step: checking a Coinbase earnings market before trading
- Open the market’s details and rule text. Record the exact title, outcome definition, source of truth, time zone, observation window and expiry.
- Identify the measurable number or event. Note whether the contract concerns GAAP or adjusted results, EPS, revenue, guidance or another metric. Do not substitute a news article’s shorthand for the contract language.
- Read the correction and dispute provisions. Determine which version of the source controls if the company or data publisher later revises the figure, and what happens if the source is delayed.
- Check the live order book. Compare the bid, offer, spread, available quantity and order types. Estimate the price you would receive for your actual order size.
- Review every fee shown before confirmation. Include the venue fee and any Coinbase transaction charge. If a fee is not displayed, locate the current schedule rather than relying on an old percentage.
- Confirm your eligibility and funding path. Make sure the product is available in your jurisdiction, understand which balance funds the trade and know where a settled payout will appear.
- Set a maximum loss and an exit plan. A contract can move against you before expiry, and it may become impossible to sell after expiry. Use only money you can afford to lose.
- After expiry, verify the official result on the Kalshi market page. Coinbase instructs users to use that page to confirm the result, not the app’s last displayed price.
- Check the destination balance. Coinbase says confirmed earnings become available in the Prediction Markets USD balance before moving through the Coinbase account workflow. Confirm the transfer and any withdrawal conditions before treating the funds as spendable elsewhere.
Fees, prices and payouts: what the numbers do—and do not—mean
Price is a probability estimate
For a one-dollar binary contract, a 25-cent price can be read as an approximate 25% market-implied probability before fees, liquidity effects and risk preferences. A 75-cent contract is not “75% safe.” If the specified outcome fails, the contract’s value can fall to zero under the stated payout structure. If it occurs, the fixed payout applies according to the rules.
Fees can erase a small edge
Suppose two venues display nearly identical prices. The venue with the tighter spread may still be cheaper after commissions, while a lower headline price may be offset by a wider spread or a Coinbase-specific charge. Because current fees are contract- and account-dependent, calculate your expected net payout from the confirmation screen and current fee schedule.
Price differences are not automatically arbitrage
An apparent gap can come from different rules, different settlement dates, stale quotes, shallow order books or restrictions on transferring funds. You would need identical outcomes, identical source and timing rules, executable prices for the full order size, and enough time to settle both legs before calling a difference an arbitrage opportunity.

Earnings-call contracts carry information-integrity risk
Earnings markets can be unusually sensitive because executives, employees, contractors, vendors and call participants may learn material information before public release. The CFTC’s 2026 enforcement advisory reported cases involving misuse of nonpublic information and fraud in prediction markets traded on KalshiEX. The existence of a contract does not remove market-abuse laws, exchange rules or confidentiality duties.
- Do not trade on material nonpublic information obtained through employment, a vendor relationship, a private briefing or an earnings-call role.
- Do not share or fabricate information to move a market, and do not coordinate deceptive activity.
- Follow your employer’s securities-trading policy and any blackout period; platform access is not permission to trade.
- Keep records of the public information and rule page you relied on if your organization requires compliance documentation.
These obligations apply regardless of whether you access the contract through Coinbase or directly through Kalshi. If you are unsure whether information is public or whether a trade is permitted, do not trade until you have obtained appropriate compliance or legal advice.
Regulation, transparency and practical limits
The CFTC describes prediction markets as products designed to help the public forecast, plan for, hedge and harness perceptions of future events. A regulated venue still requires you to understand the particular contract, fees and risks. Registration or exchange oversight does not guarantee that your forecast is correct, that a market will be liquid, or that you will be able to exit at the displayed price.
Geographic eligibility, product availability and account requirements can change. The Coinbase and Kalshi documentation cited here does not establish a permanent list of countries, a universal minimum age or a single fee schedule for every user. Check the live eligibility notice and disclosures presented for your account before depositing funds.
How large is the prediction-market sector?
KPMG reported in 2026 that combined trading volume across Kalshi and Polymarket exceeded $40 billion in 2025, up from roughly $9 billion in 2024—an increase of more than 400%. That figure describes aggregate trading volume across those two venues, not guaranteed profit, open interest, revenue or the volume of Coinbase’s interface. Rapid growth can bring more participants and information, but it can also bring crowded trades, changing rules and greater scrutiny.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trading the headline instead of the definition: “Beat earnings” may not match the metric in the contract.
- Using the app price as the settlement signal: The official result comes from the source and procedure named in Kalshi’s rules.
- Comparing unlike contracts: Similar company names or event dates do not prove identical wording and timing.
- Ignoring spread and depth: The last traded price may be unavailable for your order size.
- Assuming an old fee quote still applies: Verify current charges and any Coinbase transaction fee.
- Waiting until expiry to plan an exit: Coinbase says expired contracts cannot be sold.
- Counting unsettled funds as cash: Confirm the result and the transfer from the Prediction Markets USD balance before relying on the money.
- Trading with confidential information: Nonpublic-information misuse and fraud can lead to enforcement action.
Bottom line for choosing a venue
Choose Coinbase when the integrated account, funding and portfolio experience is worth using the Coinbase interface for Kalshi-operated markets. Choose a direct or competing venue only after confirming that its contract is genuinely comparable and that its liquidity, fees, custody and eligibility fit your needs. In every case, read the exact rule page, treat the price as an uncertain probability, and verify settlement from the designated official source. The platform logo is the least important part of an earnings contract; the definition and settlement rules are what determine whether you win or lose.
