The right platform depends on where you live, whether you want a quick buy button or an order book, and what a specific trade actually costs once spreads, payment methods and withdrawals are included. Among the platforms with official fee and product pages, the three worth comparing are Kraken (including its separate Kraken Pro order book), Robinhood Crypto (for eligible U.S. users), and Coinbase Advanced, which serves as the baseline here. The fee schedules cited below were reviewed in early October 2026. They change often, so treat them as a starting point and confirm every number on the live order preview before you trade.
Why headline fees rarely settle the question
Compare the total cost of one specific trade: the same asset, the same amount, the same order type, the same funding method and the same location. For each platform, add up:

- Maker or taker trading fee on order-book trades. This depends on your fee tier and on whether your order adds liquidity to the book or removes it.
- Spread or quoted price on instant buy, sell or convert. The spread is built into the price you receive, so it does not appear as a separate line in many fee summaries.
- Payment method costs, which vary by how you fund the purchase.
- Withdrawal charges if you plan to move assets off the exchange later.
Then check the factors that never appear in a fee table: which assets the platform lists, whether it offers the order types you use, and whether it serves your state or country.

Kraken: instant trading and Kraken Pro are different products
Kraken offers two distinct experiences, and their pricing works differently. Choosing between them is the first decision to make.

Kraken instant buy, sell and convert
Kraken’s instant buy, sell and convert feature is the simpler route. Kraken states that these transactions can include a spread and payment fees. The price you see is the price you get, so the cost is embedded rather than listed as a commission. To judge whether that is expensive for your amount, compare the quoted price with the order-book price for the same quantity on Kraken Pro.
Kraken Pro order-book trading
Kraken Pro uses a tiered maker/taker schedule. Makers, whose orders rest on the book, and takers, whose orders execute immediately against it, can pay different rates, and your tier depends on your recent activity and the product you trade. Because the schedule is updated from time to time and this article does not quote a specific tier, check the Kraken fee schedule and the preview for your own order before assuming a rate.

Robinhood Crypto: fee tiers and routing settings
Robinhood Crypto is relevant only to eligible U.S. users. It should not be described as free crypto trading, because fee tiers apply to eligible exchange-routed orders.

Robinhood’s fee tiers depend on your trailing 30-day trading volume and whether your order is treated as maker or taker. Robinhood’s current fee disclosure, which carries no date stamp, lists a published range of 0.00% to 0.95%. That range describes the whole schedule, not the rate most trades will pay, and it does not establish that Robinhood is cheaper than Coinbase for any given trade.

Routing settings change your all-in cost
Robinhood states that the all-in cost of a trade may differ depending on the routing setting you choose, and that neither routing setting guarantees a better execution price. Set the routing option you intend to use, then compare the total on the order preview under each setting before you place a larger order.
Coinbase Advanced as the baseline
Coinbase Advanced is Coinbase’s platform for experienced traders. It offers TradingView-powered charts and advanced order types, and it does not require a subscription. Fees vary by product, fee tier and maker/taker status, so an older headline rate is a poor guide. Use the fee shown for your account and your order preview when you compare it with Kraken Pro or Robinhood Crypto. Advanced is the logical choice if you want to stay within Coinbase’s ecosystem while using order types that the standard app does not offer.

Other exchanges named in roundups
A 2026 roundup from Coin Bureau names Binance, OKX, Bitget, KuCoin and Bybit as alternatives. Before considering any of them, check whether they serve your location and whether that use is permitted where you live.
Checklist before you move funds
- Pick one reference trade: the asset, the amount, the order type and the funding method you would actually use.
- Open the order preview on each platform and record the total you pay or receive, not only the fee line.
- For instant buys, compare the quoted price with the order-book price for the same quantity.
- Add the cost of your payment method and any withdrawal fee for the asset and network you plan to use.
- Confirm that the platform lists the asset and offers the order types you need.
- Confirm eligibility for your state or country and for your account type.
- Decide whether the assets will stay on the exchange or move to your own wallet, and send a small test withdrawal before moving a larger balance.
Which route fits your situation
- You want a simple purchase and accept a built-in spread: Kraken instant buy, sell and convert is the most direct option to compare.
- You trade actively and want an order book: run the same reference trade on Coinbase Advanced and Kraken Pro, at the volume you expect, and compare the previews.
- You are an eligible U.S. user who wants an investing app: test Robinhood Crypto under both routing settings, and check how your trailing 30-day volume affects your tier.
- You are outside these markets: confirm local availability on each candidate’s official site before comparing fees.
Coinbase competitors differ in more than price. Model, eligibility and what happens to your assets after purchase matter as much as the headline fee, and those are the points to verify before you commit.
