The figure is an aggregate count of ships associated with orders in CSL’s orderbook. The reporting does not provide an itemized list of 40-plus newly signed contracts. The Week also quoted Sonowal describing orders from Germany, America and Norway. The Week

No. In a clarification reported on 9 October, CSL said the relevant contracts were already part of its existing orderbook and were at various stages of development. The company objected to media interpretations that presented the ships as 40 new orders. The Week

CSL also said that orders received, including export orders, had already been notified to the stock exchanges and were in the public domain. It said new firm orders would be notified in line with its policy. In other words, Sonowal’s statement described the shipyard’s existing body of work, not a newly disclosed batch of 40 contracts.
What the 40-plus figure does—and does not—tell you
What is established
- The reported count is more than 40 ships.
- CSL said the contracts were already in its orderbook and at different stages of development.
- Sonowal named the US, Germany and Norway as examples of foreign markets.
What remains unspecified
- The available reports do not identify every vessel, buyer or country, or give a count by country.
- They do not provide contract-by-contract values or delivery dates for the ships represented by the aggregate.
- The number does not establish that 40 new contracts were signed or announced at the event.
Those details should not be inferred from earlier or unrelated shipyard projects. CSL’s broader work includes specialized commercial vessels: for example, its official 2022 announcement described commissioning and service operation vessels for offshore-wind commissioning, service, maintenance and operations, with features including motion-compensated gangways and cranes. Why the distinction matters
An orderbook is the body of contracts a company has already received and is working through; it is not the same thing as a fresh order announcement. The minister’s reported figure indicates the scale of CSL’s existing shipbuilding commitments in aggregate. Without a vessel-by-vessel disclosure, it cannot by itself show the buyers, value, schedule or mix of those commitments.
