Its familiar trucks, snow and music were meant to bring the 1995 ad into the present. But the remake’s synthetic-looking people and awkward motion made the technology hard to ignore—and left some viewers asking whether a holiday tradition can feel authentic when it is generated by AI.
What was Coca-Cola’s AI holiday commercial?
The 2024 campaign revisited Coca-Cola’s iconic 1995 “Holidays Are Coming” commercial, borrowing its recognizable visual language and song. The first public cut was 15 seconds long. Reporting described a longer version and three related holiday ads, including a Coke Zero version.

Coverage called it Coca-Cola’s first fully AI-generated ad. That description captures how central generative AI was to the production, but it does not mean every part of making or distributing a commercial was automated. The campaign was a deliberate nostalgia remake, not a wholly new holiday concept.

The discomfort is partly visual: critics pointed to synthetic-looking faces and unnatural motion. Short shots can make such details fleeting, but they can also make the people on screen feel less like participants in a lived holiday scene and more like images assembled to evoke one.

There is also a deeper mismatch. The 1995 commercial’s familiar trucks and music carry decades of association with a seasonal ritual. Reproducing those cues with generative AI can preserve the surface while changing what viewers sense behind it: instead of a human-made performance, they may see a corporate output assembled through a technology that can imitate faces and places without sharing the experiences those images suggest.
That does not mean every viewer will find the ad creepy, or that using AI automatically makes a commercial emotionally empty. It helps explain why criticism was about authenticity as well as image quality: viewers were reacting both to what looked off and to what the production method seemed to stand for.

What was Coca-Cola trying to do?
Coca-Cola’s European chief marketing officer, Javier Meza, said the brief was to bring “Holidays Are Coming” into the present; the company then explored AI as a solution. In his words: “We didn’t start by saying: ‘OK, we need to do this with AI.’ The brief was, we want to bring Holidays Are Coming into the present and then we explored AI as a solution to that.”

That rationale frames AI as a means of updating a familiar campaign, not the original creative goal. The result nevertheless made the means visible: the audience could judge the remake not just as a holiday ad, but as an example of what generative production gains and what it may leave feeling diminished.

How does the 2024 remake compare with the 1995 original?
| Aspect | 1995 “Holidays Are Coming” | 2024 remake |
|---|---|---|
| Production approach | The original commercial used conventional production and performance. | Reporting described the remake as Coca-Cola’s first fully AI-generated ad. |
| Recognizable elements | The holiday truck imagery and associated song established the campaign’s familiar visual identity. | It reused the trucks, snowy holiday imagery and song to trigger recognition. |
| Human realism | The original’s human performances were not identified in the supplied reporting as a source of criticism. | Critics called attention to uncanny-looking people and motion. |
| Stated rationale | The supplied reporting does not state a comparable production rationale for the 1995 ad. | Meza said the brief was to bring the campaign into the present, with AI explored as one solution. |
| Audience response | The campaign became associated with holiday tradition and nostalgia. | The remake drew criticism over both its visual artifacts and the authenticity of using AI for a beloved tradition. |
Is the controversy really about saving time or money?
Efficiency is part of the wider debate around generative advertising, but no independently documented production cost, savings figure, sales lift, view count or audience-size statistic was established in the reporting summarized here. It would be misleading to claim that this particular ad was cheaper, faster or commercially more successful on the basis of those missing numbers.
The dispute is more useful as a question about trade-offs. Generative AI may offer a different way to produce campaign imagery; audiences may also see that method as displacing craft, labor or the human presence that helps make an image feel emotionally credible. Those are not identical objections: a technical flaw can be fixed, while a viewer’s concern about what the production represents may remain.

The 2024 ad became a compact example of that tension because its source material already meant something to people. A familiar seasonal symbol invites recognition, but it also invites comparison with the memories attached to the original. If the remake’s images feel artificial, nostalgia can sharpen rather than soften the contrast.

No. The commercial is a corporate interpretation of a seasonal tradition, not the tradition itself. Viewers can value the original, dislike the remake, or enjoy the new version while still recognizing what AI changes about how advertising is made and perceived. The useful question is not whether a machine can reproduce the trucks and snow; it is whether the resulting ad makes people feel the human warmth those symbols were meant to carry.
