Cobblemon server behavior is controlled in two layers: global settings govern when and where the game attempts to create Pokémon, while spawn-pool data determines which species appear and under what conditions. To increase encounters, adjust attempt timing, player-distance limits or density carefully; to create a particular ecology, edit species entries with biome, time, weather and block conditions.

On a dedicated server, begin in the server’s config directory. Cobblemon commonly stores its main configuration in a path such as config/cobblemon/main.json, although the folder name and file layout can vary by Minecraft loader, Cobblemon release and hosting panel. If you do not see that path, stop the server and search the configuration directory for main.json or files whose names contain cobblemon. Do not edit a live file while the server is writing it.
Use a full backup or a staging copy before changing JSON. A malformed comma, quote or brace can prevent the server from starting, and a later in-game save can overwrite manual edits. Keep a dated copy of every working configuration so you can roll back a change without guessing which value caused a problem.

Global spawn settings that control encounter frequency
The main configuration controls the spawning system as a whole. These documented defaults are useful baselines; your installed version may expose additional keys or different defaults.
| Setting | Documented default | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
enableSpawning |
true |
Allows or prevents natural Pokémon spawning. | Disabling it removes natural encounters regardless of species data. |
ticksBetweenSpawnAttempts |
20.0 ticks |
How often the server runs a spawn-attempt cycle; at a healthy 20 TPS server, 20 ticks is about one second. | Lower values check more often and can increase CPU work. |
minimumSliceDistanceFromPlayer |
16.0 blocks |
Nearest distance from a player at which a world slice may be considered for spawning. | Changing the band alters where entities accumulate around players. |
maximumSliceDistanceFromPlayer |
64.0 blocks |
Farthest slice distance considered for a player. | A larger effective area can produce more entities and more processing. |
worldSliceDiameter |
8 |
Horizontal size of the slice used for spawn calculations. | Larger slices can improve opportunities but increase scanning cost. |
worldSliceHeight |
16 |
Vertical span used when evaluating a slice. | Increasing it can help in tall or vertically varied terrain while adding work. |
pokemonPerChunk |
1.0 |
Target Pokémon density per chunk for natural spawning. | Higher density means fuller habitats and a larger entity load. |
shinyRate |
8192.0 (one in 8,192) |
Shiny odds, expressed as a one-in-X denominator. | Lowering the denominator makes shinies more common and changes progression dramatically. |
Increasing the number of encounters
There is no single “spawn rate” slider. For more frequent encounters, first verify that enableSpawning is on. Then consider a modest reduction in ticksBetweenSpawnAttempts or a modest increase in pokemonPerChunk. These settings affect different parts of the system: attempt timing controls how often the server checks, while density controls how many Pokémon may remain in an area.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not change every value at once. A faster attempt interval combined with higher density, wider distances and larger slices can multiply entity creation and make a busy server lag. Apply one adjustment, observe tick time and entity counts for several minutes, and only then make another change.
Changing shiny odds
shinyRate is calculated as one divided by the configured number. The documented default of 8192.0 therefore represents one chance in 8,192 per applicable shiny roll, not a guarantee after 8,192 encounters. Setting a smaller denominator increases the chance; setting a larger one makes shinies rarer. Because this changes the server’s long-term economy, announce the new value to players and record it with your configuration backup.

Player-distance and slice dimensions
The minimum and maximum slice distances define the band around players that the spawning system can examine. The diameter and height determine the size of each evaluated world slice. Increasing these values may help when players report empty areas, but it also expands scanning work. Before widening the search area, check that the relevant biomes, blocks and time conditions actually permit the species you expect.
How species-level spawn rules work
Global settings decide how often the engine looks for Pokémon. Individual species rules live in spawn-pool world data: JSON files in the spawn_pool_world folder control which Pokémon can spawn naturally, their rarity category, level range or level information, weight and environmental requirements.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rarity buckets and weight
Entries use rarity buckets such as common, uncommon, rare and ultra-rare. A numeric weight is applied within the assigned bucket. Weight is therefore relative, not a universal percentage. Doubling one species’ weight does not mean it will appear twice as often on every server, because the result also depends on the other entries in that pool, global density, conditions and the active world.
There is no authoritative split such as “common equals 60 percent” that applies to every installation. Exported files, datapacks and server edits can all change the pool. Treat bucket names as an ordering and weighting system unless you have a version-specific export that lets you calculate exact proportions.

Conditions and anticonditions
A spawn entry can require or reject environmental facts. Conditions may target a biome ID or biome tag, nearby blocks, time of day, weather, height and other world circumstances. A condition beginning with # is interpreted as a biome tag; an unprefixed value can identify a specific biome. Nearby-block checks use the horizontal and vertical ranges configured by Cobblemon, so a block requirement can fail even when the player can see the block if it lies outside those ranges.
Use explicit conditions when you need predictable ecology. A broad weight-only rule can make a species appear in every eligible habitat, while a biome, time or block requirement keeps it where players expect it. An anticondition is useful for excluding an otherwise valid environment, such as preventing a cave-oriented species from appearing near a particular block or in an unwanted biome.

Exporting and maintaining custom spawn data
The exportSpawnConfig option is intended to generate a more specific spawn configuration for editing. It is a practical starting point when you need to inspect the complete structure for your installed Cobblemon version instead of guessing at field names.
- Stop or back up the server. Preserve the original configuration and world before enabling export or editing generated files.
- Enable
exportSpawnConfig. Use the Cobblemon configuration screen or the relevant JSON setting, then start the server so Cobblemon can create the detailed spawn data. - Inspect the generated
spawn_pool_worldfiles. Copy an existing entry with the species and spawn position style closest to your goal. Keeping the generated structure avoids version-specific syntax errors. - Change one rule at a time. Adjust the species, rarity bucket, weight, level information or a single condition. Preserve the namespace and valid JSON punctuation.
- Prefer a datapack for distribution. Put custom spawn-pool files under the appropriate namespaced
spawn_pool_worldpath in a datapack. A datapack can be versioned, copied to multiple worlds and removed without repeatedly hand-editing the server’s generated files. - Validate and test. Start on a staging world, check the server log for JSON errors, then test the target biome and conditions with a small group of players.
Do not replace the entire generated directory when you only need one species change. Keep your custom namespace and files separate where the format permits, so an update or regenerated export does not silently erase your work. Always compare the new files with the structure produced by your current Cobblemon build.

Reloading versus restarting
Cobblemon documents an in-game configuration screen and the command /cobblemonconfig reload. A player generally needs the permission to run it, or an administrator can issue it from the server console when supported. Reload after a change only when the setting is documented as reloadable and the command completes without an error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome options still require a complete server restart. Restart after changing a value that does not apply immediately, after enabling export, after replacing datapack resources that remain cached, or whenever the changelog for your version says a restart is required. If a reload appears to succeed but behavior does not change, stop the server cleanly, verify the file that was actually loaded, and start it again.

More Pokémon without overwhelming the server
- Confirm
enableSpawningis enabled and that species conditions match the test area. - Raise
pokemonPerChunkslightly rather than making a large jump. - If encounters remain sparse, lower
ticksBetweenSpawnAttemptsin small steps. - Leave slice dimensions and distance limits unchanged until you have measured the effect of density and timing.
- Watch server tick performance, memory use and entity counts during peak player activity.
A shinier but still controlled server
- Choose a denominator that matches the server’s intended progression; the value is one-in-X, not a percentage slider.
- Change only
shinyRatefirst so players can attribute the outcome to one decision. - Document the date, old value and new value because changing odds affects breeding, trading and competitive preparation.
A biome-specific species
- Copy the species entry from the exported spawn configuration.
- Assign the appropriate rarity bucket and a weight relative to neighboring entries.
- Add a biome ID or a tag condition. Use a tag when the rule should cover a family of biomes; use an ID for one exact biome.
- Add time, weather, height or nearby-block requirements only when they serve the intended habitat.
- Add an anticondition for an environment that must be excluded.
- Test each requirement independently so you know which condition is preventing a spawn.
Gameplay options beyond spawning
Cobblemon’s configuration also covers progression, persistence, battles and world behavior. These options do not directly increase natural encounter frequency, but they shape how the server feels after a Pokémon appears.
| Area | Examples of documented controls | Administrative effect |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | defaultBoxCount, save interval and storage format |
Determines initial box capacity and how Pokémon data is persisted. |
| World behavior | Pasture update timing and root generation | Changes update cadence and world-generation behavior around Cobblemon features. |
| Pokémon behavior | Maximum Dynamax level and flight dismounting | Sets progression limits and how travel abilities interact with dismounting. |
| Starter handling | Starter export | Controls whether starter information is exported for administrative or integration use. |
| Battle data | Showdown automatic updates | Controls whether battle data can update automatically. |
Change these independently from spawn tuning. A server can have generous encounter density but conservative storage, Dynamax or battle settings, or the reverse. Record the intended player experience before changing an option so a technical fix does not accidentally alter progression.

Performance checks and troubleshooting
Players see no Pokémon
- Check
enableSpawning, then confirm the player is in a world where natural spawning is enabled. - Inspect the relevant spawn-pool file for a valid namespace, species identifier and matching conditions.
- Test at the required time, weather, height and nearby blocks; a single unmet condition prevents the entry.
- Check distance limits and density. A full local cap can make a new attempt appear to do nothing.
- Read the server log after reload or restart for JSON parsing and datapack errors.
Spawning is too heavy
- Restore the last known-good value for the setting changed most recently.
- Reduce
pokemonPerChunkbefore widening slices or distances. - Raise
ticksBetweenSpawnAttemptstoward the documented default if checks are running too frequently. - Remove redundant broad species entries and use conditions to limit habitats.
- Measure during the busiest period; a quiet test with one player can hide a multiplayer entity load.
A file change had no effect
Confirm that you edited the server’s active world and configuration directory rather than a client installation or an old backup. Then determine whether the setting is reloadable. Run /cobblemonconfig reload where supported, and perform a full restart when the change is cached or restart-only. If a datapack is involved, verify that the server recognizes the pack and that its namespace and folder path match the expected spawn_pool_world location.
How to compare server presets
When evaluating two Cobblemon configurations, compare four separate axes instead of calling one simply “higher rate.”
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Encounter frequency | What are the attempt interval, density target and player-distance limits? |
| Encounter composition | Which species files exist, which rarity buckets are used and how are weights distributed? |
| Environmental specificity | Do entries require particular biomes, tags, blocks, heights, times or weather? |
| Operational cost | How much entity and scanning work do slice dimensions create, and which changes require reloads or restarts? |
This framework separates a server that produces more encounters from one that merely has broader species coverage. It also exposes why two servers with the same pokemonPerChunk value can feel completely different.
