Coal-tar pitch and carbon black are different industrial carbon materials. Coal-tar pitch is a coal-tar distillation product used mainly as a binder and impregnating material for aluminium anodes and graphite electrodes. Carbon black is a carbon-rich particulate material used chiefly for reinforcement, pigmentation or conductivity, depending on its grade. Himadri Speciality Chemical manufactures both categories, along with speciality carbon black, naphthalene, speciality oils, construction-chemical additives and newer battery materials.
Himadri’s named customers include CEAT, Apollo Tyres, Bridgestone, MRF, Hwaseung, Vedanta, NALCO, Graphite India and Pidilite. Its FY2024-25 sustainability report lists installed capacities of 500,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) for coal-tar distillation, 120,000 MTPA for carbon black and 60,000 MTPA for speciality carbon black across seven Indian facilities and one Chinese unit.

What coal-tar pitch is
Coal-tar pitch (CTP) is the heavy, carbon-rich fraction produced when coal tar is distilled. Himadri’s FY2023-24 annual report describes it as “a complex chemical generated by distilling coal tar” and a crucial raw material for aluminium smelting, graphite-electrode production, industrial surface coatings and chemical industries.

Why pitch matters in carbon anodes
Aluminium producers mix pitch with petroleum coke and other carbon materials. The pitch wets the coke particles and penetrates their open pores, converting a dry mixture into a formable paste. After forming and baking, the binder helps create a mechanically strong, electrically conductive carbon anode. Pitch quality therefore affects mixing, forming, baking behaviour, density, emissions control and the finished anode’s performance.
Why pitch matters in graphite electrodes
Graphite-electrode manufacturers use pitch as a binder and, in some stages, as an impregnating material. The binder holds the carbon aggregate together before baking and graphitisation. Impregnation can fill accessible pores and improve the electrode’s density and resistance to damage in service. The exact grade is selected against the electrode maker’s formulation, equipment and qualification requirements.
Other reported pitch applications
Himadri’s annual report also identifies carbon fibres, lithium-ion battery anodes, coatings, roofing, paving and chemical feedstocks as pitch-related applications. These uses do not all consume the same grade: a pitch suitable for an aluminium anode is not automatically suitable for a carbon-fibre precursor or a battery-anode process.

Himadri’s pitch offering
Himadri says its coal-tar pitch is used as a binder in aluminium-anode and graphite-electrode manufacture. The company also says it developed a super-speciality grade for India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and has approvals from major global aluminium and graphite manufacturers. Those are Himadri’s own product and qualification statements; individual approvals and specifications must be confirmed during a customer’s technical qualification.
What carbon black means in Himadri’s portfolio
Carbon black is a finely divided carbon material whose performance depends on grade-specific particle and surface properties. In a tyre or rubber compound it normally acts as a reinforcing material, helping tune strength, abrasion resistance, stiffness and appearance. In other formulations it can provide black pigmentation or electrical conductivity.
Himadri’s FY2023-24 annual report describes the company’s earlier core portfolio as supplying coal-tar pitch to aluminium and graphite-electrode industries and carbon black to tyre industries. The corporate portfolio now places speciality carbon black alongside products serving tyres, paints, plastics, aluminium, graphite electrodes, batteries, agrochemicals, defence and construction chemicals.

Standard carbon black and speciality grades
“Carbon black” is a family of grades, not one universal powder. Tyre makers qualify grades for a particular rubber recipe and performance target. Paint, plastic and coating formulators may need a different balance of tint strength, dispersion, surface chemistry and conductivity. Advanced-material applications can impose still other requirements. Himadri’s list of industries is therefore a portfolio description, not a claim that every grade works in every application.

How coal-tar pitch is used from delivery to finished product
- Grade selection: The aluminium or graphite producer specifies the required softening behaviour, quinoline-insoluble level, impregnation performance and other process controls.
- Receipt and storage: The customer receives solid or heated liquid pitch according to the agreed supply format and stores it under conditions that prevent contamination and uncontrolled temperature changes.
- Mixing with carbon aggregate: In anode production, pitch is combined with coke and recycled anode material. In electrode production, it is blended with the selected carbon aggregate.
- Wetting and forming: Heat and mixing allow pitch to wet particles and penetrate accessible pores. The resulting paste is formed into anodes or electrode shapes.
- Baking and further treatment: Controlled heating carbonises the binder. Graphite-electrode makers may then graphitise and impregnate the body, while aluminium anodes proceed through the plant’s baking and quality-control stages.
- Qualification feedback: The customer checks density, strength, electrical behaviour, emissions and other internal specifications before approving a regular supply.
The process explains why consistency is as important as a headline specification. A pitch that meets a single laboratory number but varies in viscosity, moisture, insolubles or thermal behaviour can disrupt a continuous production line.

The customer names show the sectors Himadri serves; they do not establish that every named company buys every product. In industrial supply, a customer relationship can cover one approved grade, several plants or a broader product portfolio.

Neither material is a consumer substitute for the other. Pitch is a process binder that becomes part of a manufactured carbon body; carbon black is generally a particulate additive dispersed through a rubber, coating, plastic or other formulation.

Himadri Speciality Chemical is an India-based speciality-chemicals company. Its corporate description lists speciality carbon black, coal-tar pitch, refined naphthalene, new-energy materials, sodium naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF), speciality oils and power among its products and activities.
The company’s FY2024-25 sustainability report describes seven manufacturing facilities in India and one unit in China. It reports the following installed capacities:

Himadri’s coal-tar-pitch product page says the company is “the largest coal tar pitch manufacturer in India, holding over 70% market share in the space.” That is a company claim presented on its current product page, not an independently audited market-share finding in the information available here.
How industrial buyers evaluate these materials
Start with the process, not the product name
A procurement team should describe the anode, electrode, tyre compound, coating or plastic process first. The same broad product label can cover grades with materially different behaviour. Request the technical data sheet, safety documentation, certificate of analysis format and recommended storage conditions for the specific grade.
Check qualification and consistency
- Define the acceptance tests used at receiving and during production.
- Compare lot-to-lot variation, not only one sample’s headline values.
- Confirm that the supplier can maintain the approved grade during planned maintenance, feedstock changes or logistics disruptions.
- Document trial quantities, plant location, approval status and the conditions under which a grade was qualified.
Evaluate logistics and handling
Pitch buyers must align delivery temperature or solid handling, tank or silo capability, heating arrangements and emergency supply plans with the plant. Carbon-black buyers should check packaging, dust control, transfer equipment and dispersion preparation. Delivery reliability can matter as much as nominal capacity when an interruption would stop anode, electrode, tyre or coating production.

Use technical support as part of the supply decision
Industrial carbon materials are formulation-dependent. Supplier engineers may need to troubleshoot mixing, forming, baking, dispersion, conductivity or surface defects. A purchasing comparison should therefore include response times, plant-trial support, change-control procedures and the ability to investigate out-of-specification lots.
What the customer and end-use evidence does—and does not—show
The named companies establish that Himadri identifies customers across tyres, aluminium, graphite electrodes and other industrial markets. They do not disclose contract size, current volume, pricing, exclusivity or the precise grade purchased by each customer. Likewise, installed capacity is a measure of potential production capability, not proof that all lines ran at full utilisation in FY2024-25.
Himadri’s portfolio language also groups established carbon products with newer battery and advanced-material activities. Battery-anode, defence and other speciality applications generally require customer-specific qualification, so an application listing should not be read as evidence that a commercial grade is interchangeable with a conventional tyre or anode grade.
