A CMOS image sensor converts light into digital image data. In each pixel, a photodiode turns incoming photons into electrons; the pixel converts that charge to a voltage, amplifiers and column circuits read it, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) assigns a number, and image-processing hardware turns those numbers into a photo, video frame, or measurement.

CMOS describes the semiconductor electronics used to build the sensor, not a guaranteed level of image quality. Pixel architecture, sensor area, optics, quantum efficiency, noise, shutter type, cooling, readout electronics, and software determine whether a particular CMOS camera is suitable for a phone, a robot, a microscope, or a telescope.

What “CMOS” means

CMOS stands for complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor, a manufacturing technology used for integrated circuits. A CMOS image sensor is an imaging device made with that technology. The term does not specify resolution, pixel size, color capability, illumination structure, shutter type, or performance class.

CMOS active-pixel development is associated with Eric Fossum’s work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. NASA describes how the technology moved from space-imaging research into widespread commercial products: NASA’s technology history.

How a CMOS sensor forms an image

  1. Reset: Pixel sensing nodes are prepared for an exposure.
  2. Photon collection: Light passes through a lens and, in a color camera, a color-filter array. Photons reaching the photodiode generate electron–hole pairs.
  3. Charge accumulation: The collected electrons represent the light received during the exposure.
  4. Charge-to-voltage conversion: The pixel’s sensing node changes voltage as charge accumulates.
  5. Amplification and readout: A pixel amplifier and row/column circuitry transfer the signal. CMOS commonly performs many operations in parallel, rather than moving every pixel’s charge through one output register.
  6. Digitization: An ADC converts each analog level into a numerical code.
  7. Processing: A camera may apply black-level correction, white balance, demosaicing, gain, noise reduction, sharpening, HDR combination, and compression before delivering an image.

The chain is therefore photons → electrons → voltage → digital values → processed image. A JPEG or phone photograph is not identical to the sensor’s raw output. Parallel readout and nearby digital electronics are major reasons CMOS devices can be fast, compact, and power-efficient. Hamamatsu provides a technical overview at Advances in CMOS image sensors.

What is inside a pixel?

A conventional active pixel contains a photodiode, a reset transistor, a source-follower amplifier, and a row-select transistor. Older passive pixels used a photodiode and switch with no local amplifier and were more vulnerable to bus-capacitance and readout noise.

Pinned photodiodes improve charge transfer and can reduce dark current, image lag, and reset-related noise. Correlated double sampling (CDS) measures reset and signal levels and subtracts them, reducing certain reset and fixed-pattern components. Modern pixels may also contain storage memory, dual-conversion-gain paths, phase-detection elements, multiple photodiodes, or even local conversion circuitry. “One transistor per pixel” is not a useful description of current CMOS designs.

The specifications that actually matter

Specification What it means Why it matters
Resolution Total sampled pixels Detail and cropping, if optics and motion support it
Pixel pitch Center-to-center pixel spacing, usually in micrometers Sampling, charge capacity, diffraction and lens demands
Sensor size Active imaging area; optical-format labels are historical conventions Field of view, lens size, noise and depth-of-field behavior
Quantum efficiency (QE) Fraction of incident photons producing useful electrons, varying by wavelength Photon efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio
Full-well capacity Approximate electrons a pixel holds before saturation Highlight headroom and dynamic range
Read noise Noise introduced during conversion, amplification, sampling and digitization Low-light and short-exposure performance
Dark current Thermally generated signal without light Long exposures and hot environments
Bit depth Number of digital quantization levels Tonal coding, but not automatically usable dynamic range
Frame rate Frames per second in a specified mode Motion capture and throughput
Shutter type How exposure timing is shared across pixels Motion geometry and flash synchronization
Interface Data link such as USB, GigE, Camera Link, CoaXPress or GMSL2 Whether the generated data can leave the camera

Pixel size and sensor size

Larger pixels generally hold more charge and can offer better signal-to-noise performance within the same technology generation, but design and optics matter. Smaller pixels fit more samples into a given format and can capture finer detail when the lens and focus support it; they may have less full-well capacity and stricter diffraction and lens requirements.

Total sensor area is different from pixel pitch. A 24-megapixel full-frame sensor and a 24-megapixel phone sensor have radically different pixel sizes, lenses, fields of view, and light-collecting areas. “1-inch” and “1/2.3-inch” are optical-format names, not literal diagonal measurements.

Resolution and megapixels

Megapixels count samples, not guaranteed visible detail. Resolving power also depends on lens MTF, focus, diffraction, optical filtering, motion blur, atmospheric conditions, demosaicing, noise, and compression. More pixels help when the lens resolves them, light is sufficient, motion is controlled, and cropping or large output is needed. They add little when optics, diffraction, noise, bandwidth, or storage are already limiting.

QE, fill factor and microlenses

QE is wavelength-dependent, so a sensor can respond differently to ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light. It is not the same as lens transmission, lux sensitivity, ISO, or pixel size. Fill factor is the share of pixel area that is photosensitive rather than occupied by wiring, transistors, or memory. Microlenses redirect light toward the photodiode. Isolation structures, backside illumination, and pixel processing can make a small pixel perform far better than its area alone suggests. Hamamatsu discusses these factors in its image-sensor selection guide.

Front-illuminated versus back-illuminated CMOS

In a front-illuminated (FSI) sensor, light enters from the side containing metal wiring and transistors, so some light is obstructed or reflected. A back-illuminated (BSI) sensor arranges the silicon so light enters from the reverse side, reducing that obstruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BSI can improve collection efficiency, especially for small pixels, but it does not guarantee the best overall sensor. Crosstalk, pixel isolation, full-well capacity, read noise, processing and manufacturing quality still matter. Sony says its Pregius S global-shutter technology combines a BSI pixel structure with smaller pixels; its technology page reports sizes down to approximately 2.74 micrometers in the described generation: Sony global-shutter sensors.

Color and monochrome sensors

Most color cameras place a Bayer-style red, green and blue filter array over the pixels. Each photosite measures only one color band; the processor estimates the missing colors through demosaicing. More green samples reflect human luminance sensitivity, but interpolation can produce false color and moiré.

  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

A monochrome sensor removes the color filter array, allowing each pixel to collect light across its response range. This often improves sensitivity and per-pixel spatial fidelity for scientific, astronomy and machine-vision work, provided the spectral band, optics and processing are comparable. It does not record color directly; color requires multiple exposures, beam splitters, filter wheels or another method. Specialized RGBW, stacked, multispectral and near-infrared arrays trade convenience, sensitivity and spectral information differently.

Rolling shutter versus global shutter

Rolling shutter

Rows in a rolling-shutter sensor begin and end exposure at different times. The design is efficient and common in phones, cameras and video systems, but rapid motion can make vertical objects lean, propellers bend, LED signs appear wavy, or a flash illuminate only part of a frame. Sony explains the architecture and column-parallel readout at its rolling-shutter technology page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Global shutter

A global-shutter sensor captures or stores exposure for all pixels together, then reads the stored signals. It reduces geometric distortion and improves synchronization for robotics, inspection, metrology, tracking and strobes. Storage and extra circuitry can reduce fill factor or full-well capacity and increase power, complexity and cost. Global shutter does not remove ordinary motion blur caused by a long exposure.

Sony’s Pregius architecture uses photosensitive and memory sections so signals can be captured simultaneously and transferred later: Pregius global-shutter technology.

Choose by motion and timing

  • Static subjects and ordinary photography: rolling shutter is often adequate.
  • Fast motion, robotics, inspection, measurement or precise strobes: prefer global shutter.
  • High-speed scientific work: verify exposure timing, trigger latency, storage behavior, readout mode and interface—not just the shutter label.

Exposure, frame rate and readout are different

Exposure time is how long each pixel gathers light. Frame rate is frames per second. Readout time is how long data takes to transfer; rolling-shutter line time is the interval between row timings. Trigger latency is the delay from an external trigger to exposure or output. A headline frame rate may require reduced resolution, a region of interest, binning, lower bit depth or a faster interface.

Noise, dynamic range and gain

Main noise sources

  • Photon shot noise: statistical fluctuation in photon arrival; it grows with signal and cannot be calibrated away.
  • Read noise: introduced by conversion, amplification, sampling and digitization.
  • Dark current: thermally generated charge that rises with temperature and exposure time.
  • Fixed-pattern noise: pixel-to-pixel differences in offset, gain or dark current; calibration and CDS reduce some components.

Some sensors offer dual conversion gain: a high-capacity mode for bright scenes and a low-noise mode for dim scenes. A useful conceptual relationship is dynamic range ≈ full-well capacity ÷ read noise; in decibels, 20 log10(full-well capacity / read noise). Real comparisons must use the same gain, temperature, saturation definition, signal-to-noise criterion, raw or processed output, and HDR method.

ISO is not extra light

Exposure determines how many photons arrive. Analog gain amplifies before or during digitization; digital gain multiplies numbers afterward. An ISO setting usually controls gain and output scaling. Raising it brightens an underexposed image but cannot recover photons that were never captured, and it can make read noise, pattern noise and clipping more visible.

Bit depth describes quantization, not guaranteed dynamic range. If noise or saturation dominates, extra digital codes do not create additional scene information.

CMOS versus CCD, sCMOS and other designs

CMOS commonly offers parallel readout, high speed, lower power, integrated logic, high pixel counts and compact modules. CCDs historically offered highly uniform output and excellent low-light behavior in some instruments. The old rule “CCD quality, CMOS speed” is now too simple: modern CMOS can deliver low noise, high QE and scientific performance, while CCD or EM-CCD can still suit specific legacy, spectral or extreme-low-light instruments. Hamamatsu compares these families in its visual guide.

Scientific CMOS (sCMOS) is optimized for quantitative imaging: low read noise, high QE, dynamic range, linearity, uniformity, timing and often cooling. Evaluate read-noise distribution, dark current at stated temperature, QE curves, full-well capacity, linearity, calibration and full-resolution performance. Hamamatsu describes sCMOS architecture at its sCMOS guide.

Other variants include stacked CMOS, dual-conversion-gain sensors, event-based sensors, SPAD and photon-counting devices, multispectral and near-infrared sensors, radiation-tolerant designs and one-dimensional line-scan arrays. These are specialized architectures, not interchangeable marketing labels.

Choosing a CMOS sensor or camera

General photography and smartphones

Prioritize sensor area, lens aperture and quality, dynamic range at relevant gains, autofocus, stabilization, rolling-shutter behavior, raw support and image processing. Phones additionally depend on pixel binning, BSI or stacked construction, HDR algorithms, heat and power limits.

Machine vision and robotics

  1. Decide whether moving subjects require global shutter.
  2. Specify exposure time, trigger and strobe synchronization.
  3. Confirm full-resolution frame rate and pixel pitch.
  4. Choose color or monochrome according to whether color is information or an obstruction.
  5. Match USB3, GigE, 5GigE, Camera Link, CoaXPress or GMSL2 to bandwidth and cable requirements.
  6. Check SDK, GenICam support, operating temperature, long-term availability and vendor support.

Scientific imaging and astronomy

Compare QE across the wavelengths you use, read-noise distribution, dark current at a specified cooling temperature, full-well capacity, linearity, pixel response uniformity, timing, bit depth, calibration files, cooling and data integrity. Depending on field of view and photon levels, consider cooled sCMOS, EM-CCD, scientific CCD, qCMOS or photon-counting cameras. Hamamatsu describes qCMOS at its qCMOS page.

Embedded projects

Budget for optics, drivers, processing, memory, heat and the physical interface—not just the sensor. A bare sensor requires clocks, power rails, firmware, an image pipeline and a compatible lens or module.

Common failure modes

  • Rolling-shutter distortion: reduce motion or readout time, synchronize lighting, or use global shutter; software correction is unsuitable for metrology-critical geometry.
  • Saturation: clipped pixels have no recoverable highlight detail. HDR can extend range but may create motion or tone-mapping artifacts.
  • Heat: high frame rates, gain and long exposures raise temperature, increasing dark current and calibration drift.
  • Interface bottlenecks: the camera may lower frame rate, resolution, bit depth or region of interest when the link cannot carry all generated data.

Two cameras using the same sensor can differ substantially because of electronics, cooling, firmware, gain, calibration, optics and interface. Hamamatsu explains these system-level differences at its camera architecture guide.

Final checklist

  • What application and wavelength range are required?
  • Is the subject moving, and is global shutter necessary?
  • How much light is available, and what exposure time is acceptable?
  • Is color required, or would monochrome improve measurement?
  • What field of view, sensor area and optical resolution are needed?
  • What frame rate, bit depth, trigger behavior and interface are required together?
  • How will temperature, cooling, calibration and software affect the finished camera?

The Bottom Line

Choose a CMOS camera by the complete imaging system—not by megapixels or the CMOS label alone. Match sensor area, optics, QE, noise, dynamic range, shutter timing, throughput and software to the scene you must measure or record.
