“C’mon, man”: Windows 11 26H2 finally restores movable taskbars—but key features are still missing

Windows 11 26H2 makes the taskbar movable again: eligible PCs can place it along the top, bottom, left or right edge, align its icons and shrink its height. That is a major correction for users who relied on Windows 10-style layouts. But Microsoft’s own 15 May 2026 announcement confirms that alternate positions still lack auto-hide, tablet optimization and touch gestures, while the search box becomes an icon. The fairest verdict is not that 26H2 is universally unusable; it is that the feature has returned before parity and polish are complete.

What Windows 11 26H2 changes

The Experimental-channel announcement from Microsoft on 15 May 2026 introduced the taskbar controls Windows 11 users have requested since the operating system launched:

  • Four-edge placement: the taskbar can sit at the top, bottom, left or right edge of the display.
  • Icon alignment: users can choose how taskbar icons are aligned rather than being locked to the default centered arrangement.
  • Location-aware flyouts: Start and Search open in relation to the taskbar’s new position.
  • Smaller taskbar mode: the bar and its icons can be reduced in size without restarting Windows.

Windows Central’s 26 July 2026 overview describes these controls as part of 26H2, while cautioning that Microsoft can deliver them through monthly updates and that the same improvements may also appear on Windows 11 25H2. In other words, “26H2” identifies the enablement and servicing context, not necessarily a single dramatic replacement of the operating system.

The missing pieces that prompted the “half-baked” criticism

Microsoft’s announcement is unusually clear about what does not work yet when the taskbar is on the top or a side edge:

Capability Status in alternate positions What it means
Auto-hide Not supported The bar cannot automatically disappear when the pointer leaves the edge.
Tablet-optimized taskbar Not supported Touch-oriented sizing and behavior are unavailable in these layouts.
Touch gestures Still in progress Touch users should not expect full gesture parity with the bottom position.
Search box Replaced by a search icon The wider search-field presentation is not retained on alternate edges.
Per-monitor positions Under evaluation Microsoft has not committed to independent placement on each monitor.
Drag-and-drop Under evaluation Microsoft is still considering the feature rather than promising its return.

That list explains the criticism. A person who only wanted a vertical bar for a wide monitor may find 26H2 useful immediately. Someone who expects the complete Windows 10 taskbar experience—including auto-hide on a side edge or touch-friendly tablet behavior—will encounter obvious omissions.

Why Microsoft removed movable and resizable taskbars

A redesigned taskbar had to be rebuilt

PCWorld reported that Windows 11 did not carry over large portions of the older Win32 taskbar code. Microsoft rebuilt the component and prioritized core functionality, which left less-established layouts behind. Former Windows core user-experience manager Tali Roth explained the engineering problem: “When you think about having the taskbar on the right or the left, all of a sudden the reflow and the work that all of the apps have to do to be able to have a wonderful experience in those environments is just huge.”

Vertical placement changes more than a rectangle’s location. App buttons, notification controls, system-tray content, flyouts and application windows all have to recalculate available space and reflow correctly. The work becomes harder when multiple display sizes, scaling settings and touch modes are involved.

The original Windows 11 design favored a centered composition

The Register reported comments from former Microsoft executive Mikhail Parakhin on 16 February 2026. He said the original vision was to create “symmetric panes”: notification, system-control and related elements on the right, with Weather, Widgets and News on the left. That arrangement pushed the Start menu toward the center. He also said a vertical taskbar began conflicting with those panes.

Parakhin added that Windows had supported the arrangement since Windows 95 and that he had used it throughout his life. His comments help explain why the restriction was a design decision rather than a simple missing checkbox, while also acknowledging why long-time users considered it a needless loss of control.

Is the 26H2 taskbar usable?

For keyboard-and-mouse users who need a top or vertical taskbar, yes—with qualifications. The restored placement and compact mode solve real screen-space and workflow problems, especially on wide displays where a left-side bar can keep more vertical room available for documents or browser windows.

It is not feature-complete. Missing auto-hide is the most visible issue for people who want every pixel available. Touch users lose tablet optimization and gestures, and users who prefer a persistent search field get only an icon in alternate positions. These are functional differences, not cosmetic defects.

Tom’s Guide’s 30 September 2026 hands-on report reached a similar conclusion after testing the restored vertical layout. Its reviewer praised the option but noted that the bar could not disappear when the pointer was not hovering over the side or top, unlike the bottom layout, and hoped Microsoft would correct that behavior.

Who should enable it now—and who should wait?

Enable 26H2 if you need a different edge

  • You work primarily with a mouse and want a left- or right-side taskbar.
  • You need a smaller bar to reclaim vertical or horizontal screen space.
  • You accept that auto-hide, drag-and-drop and some touch behavior may be absent.
  • You can tolerate an enablement update whose feature set may continue changing through monthly servicing.

Wait if parity is essential

  • You depend on auto-hide in a top or side position.
  • You use Windows mainly as a tablet or with touch gestures.
  • You require independent taskbar placement on multiple monitors.
  • You expect Windows 10-era drag-and-drop and a full search box in every orientation.

How eligible PCs receive Windows 11 26H2

Tom’s Guide reports that the feature is delivered to eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems through Windows Update or Microsoft-hosted enablement packages. An enablement package activates functionality already present in the installed operating system; it is not the same as replacing Windows with a large ISO-style image.

  1. Open Settings and select Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install the offered 26H2-related update if it appears.
  3. Restart only if Windows requests it; the smaller-taskbar option itself does not require a restart.
  4. If no update appears, verify that the PC is running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and wait for staged availability. Microsoft-hosted enablement packages may be offered for eligible systems that do not receive the feature through the normal Windows Update prompt.
  5. After installation, open Settings and the taskbar personalization controls, then choose the edge, alignment and smaller-taskbar options available on that build.

Availability can be staged, so an eligible version number does not guarantee that every machine receives the package at the same time. Microsoft’s own documentation also makes clear that some controls remain under evaluation.

26H2 compared with Windows 10 and earlier Windows 11 builds

Area Windows 10 Earlier Windows 11 builds Windows 11 26H2
Taskbar position Top, bottom, left or right Effectively fixed to the bottom All four edges restored
Auto-hide in alternate positions Supported Not applicable because alternate placement was unavailable Not supported initially
Touch/tablet behavior Established taskbar modes Windows 11 taskbar behavior Tablet optimization and gestures missing in alternate positions
Compact sizing Available through established sizing behavior More limited Smaller-taskbar option without a restart
Search presentation Varied by Windows 10 release Windows 11 default behavior Search icon replaces the box on alternate edges
Per-monitor placement and drag-and-drop More mature behavior Not restored Still being evaluated by Microsoft

What to expect next

Microsoft has not announced that the missing behaviors are complete. Its 15 May statement specifically says auto-hide and tablet optimization are not yet supported, that touch work is ongoing, and that per-monitor positions and drag-and-drop are being evaluated. Because these improvements can ship through monthly updates—and may also reach 25H2—users should judge the feature by the build installed on their PC rather than by the “26H2” label alone.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: 26H2 repairs one of Windows 11’s most persistent customization complaints, but it does not yet restore the full behavior users remember from Windows 10. Treat it as a useful first release of movable taskbars, not the finished replacement for the old taskbar.
