CM14 and CM14.1 Downloads and Device List: What Still Works in 2026

Short answer: CyanogenMod 14 was based on Android 7.0 Nougat (API 24), and CM14.1 on Android 7.1 Nougat (API 25). Both are discontinued. CyanogenMod’s original download infrastructure is no longer a dependable source, and a page calling a ZIP “official” does not prove that it came from the project. For most devices, the practical historical successor is LineageOS 14.1, but that is a different project and download.

Use the lists below as historical leads, not as permission to flash a file. Exact model, regional variant, codename, firmware, recovery and build provenance must all match before installation.

What CM14 and CM14.1 mean

Label Android base API level Meaning
CM14 Android 7.0 Nougat 24 Earlier Nougat branch
CM14.1 Android 7.1 Nougat 25 Later Nougat branch, generally the more relevant final CyanogenMod Nougat branch

These Android version and API mappings are documented by the Android Open Source Project (AOSP build-number reference). Android 7.1 was also known as the Nougat-MR1 development milestone (Android compatibility downloads). CM14.1 is not Android 14.1 and has no connection to modern Android numbering.

CyanogenMod added its own device support, kernel changes, settings and release process on top of the Android base. “Based on Android 7.1” therefore does not mean identical to a stock Android 7.1 installation.

Is an official CM14 download still available?

No dependable, current CyanogenMod download service remains. The project was discontinued, so an old link may be dead, redirected, preserved by a mirror, or replaced with a LineageOS file. The prominent result for this topic is a third-party page on NerdsChalk, not an official CyanogenMod or LineageOS domain (NerdsChalk CM14 coverage).

Third-party historical compilations can help identify codenames, but they mix official nightlies, experimental work, unofficial ports and later LineageOS links. For example, the compilation titled “official” contains both CM14.1 and LineageOS 14.1 references (historical CM14.1 device compilation). Treat every surviving ZIP as unverified until its filename, build date, checksum or signature, device documentation and community provenance agree.

Historical CM14.1 devices and codenames

The following are examples reported in historical compilations, not a complete or current support roster. “Official” here means that a device was reported as having a CyanogenMod project build at some point; it does not certify a particular mirror or ZIP. A device could have only nightlies, an experimental snapshot or an unofficial port, and support changed over time.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Exynos variant Variant-specific codename Exact model number and chipset
Google, Motorola, HTC, Huawei, LG, Sony, Xiaomi, Wileyfox, Lenovo and others Multiple phones and tablets Different codenames per model Do not infer compatibility from the marketing family name

The historical CM14 device-list coverage is useful for discovering additional names (CM14 historical list). A current LineageOS device database can help identify variant distinctions, but it does not prove historical CM14.1 support or current support; devices absent from that database are unsupported there (LineageOS device lookup).

Why the codename matters

Recovery and ROM installers normally match the internal codename, not the retail name. “Galaxy S5,” “Nexus,” “OnePlus” and tablet family names cover hardware with different chipsets, partitions, radios and kernels. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Canadian, Korean, Chinese and international editions may require separate builds. Wi-Fi and LTE tablets can also be incompatible, as can Exynos and Snapdragon versions.

How to verify a device before downloading

  1. Read the exact model number in Android settings, on the label or in the bootloader screen.
  2. Identify the internal codename with device-specific documentation; do not guess from the product name.
  3. Record carrier or regional edition, chipset, storage layout and whether the device is a phone, Wi-Fi tablet or LTE tablet.
  4. Determine whether the file is CM14, CM14.1 or LineageOS 14.1. Similar Android bases do not make the ZIP interchangeable.
  5. Establish whether the build was official, unofficial, experimental, a nightly or a port.
  6. Check required bootloader, modem/vendor firmware and recovery versions.
  7. Confirm the build date, original filename and any published checksum or cryptographic signature.
  8. Read reports for camera, Bluetooth, GPS, fingerprint, NFC, cellular data, VoLTE and encryption rather than assuming every component works.

Where an old build may be found

Preservation projects and community mirrors sometimes retain old files, including Internet Archive snapshots, but availability and authenticity vary. Prefer an archive that preserves the original filename, directory structure, build date, checksum or signature and device instructions. Avoid shortened links, repacked ZIPs and downloads that offer no provenance. A search result or a page using “official” in its title is not authentication.

LineageOS succeeded CyanogenMod and continued the Android 7.1-era code under the LineageOS 14.1 name. A historical LineageOS device list explains that transition (LineageOS 14.1 historical list), while LineageOS’s own historical development notes provide project context (LineageOS historical development). A LineageOS ZIP is not a CyanogenMod ZIP, even where the Android base and device support are closely related.

Files and prerequisites

  • ROM ZIP: The build for the exact codename and Android branch.
  • Compatible recovery: Usually a device-specific TWRP or Lineage recovery version.
  • Google Apps, optional: Choose an Android 7.1 package matching ARM, ARM64 or x86 architecture and available system space. Size variants such as pico or nano are not interchangeable in every layout.
  • Firmware or bootloader package: Required on some devices and regions.
  • Optional root package: Only if the device-specific instructions support it.
  • Verification data: Checksums or signatures, original filenames and build information.
  • Backups: Copy photos, messages, authenticator records and other irreplaceable data off the device.

Android 7.1-era hardware generally predates the modern Project Treble generic-system-image workflow. Do not assume that a generic image can replace a device build.

Generic installation outline

This is a framework, not a universal flashing recipe. Partition layouts, encryption, recovery menus and bootloader commands differ by device.

  1. Back up all irreplaceable data and confirm that you can restore the manufacturer’s firmware.
  2. Verify model, codename, variant, ROM branch, firmware requirement and recovery version.
  3. Unlock the bootloader if the device requires it, understanding that unlocking commonly erases user data.
  4. Install the documented custom recovery and boot into recovery mode.
  5. Transfer the ROM and, if required, the matching Google Apps package to accessible storage.
  6. Create a recovery backup where supported.
  7. Perform only the wipes specified for that device; do not format encrypted storage casually.
  8. Flash the ROM ZIP. In an ADB sideload workflow, the commonly used command is adb sideload rom-file.zip, provided that recovery supports sideloading.
  9. Flash Google Apps immediately afterward when the ROM instructions require that order.
  10. Reboot and allow an unusually long first boot before assuming failure.
  11. Confirm that the system, radio, Wi-Fi, camera and storage work before restoring all data.

Troubleshooting and recovery

Boot loop

Return to recovery, recheck the codename and firmware, repeat the required wipe and confirm that Google Apps matches Android 7.1, architecture and partition space.

Status 7 or an assert error

The package usually rejected the target model or found an incompatible device assertion. Do not bypass the check casually; first verify the model and ZIP provenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No mobile signal

Check modem, bootloader, firmware and carrier variant. A ROM can boot while using an incompatible radio stack, and VoLTE or emergency calling may not function.

Camera, Bluetooth, GPS or fingerprint failure

These are common risks with unofficial or incomplete ports. Consult the device’s historical bug reports rather than treating a successful boot as full hardware support.

Encrypted or inaccessible storage

Older recoveries may not decrypt userdata. Avoid destructive formatting until you understand the data-loss consequences and have an external backup.

Google Apps crash loop

The package may target the wrong Android release or architecture, exceed available system space or have been flashed in the wrong order.

ADB cannot see the device

Check the cable, USB drivers, recovery mode, RSA authorization and whether recovery exposes ADB. Try another port or cable before changing partitions.

Recovery or system will not boot

Recovery may require the correct stock firmware, bootloader tools or a manufacturer-specific unbrick procedure. A degraded battery or failing eMMC/UFS storage can also interrupt flashing.

Should you install CM14.1 in 2026?

For banking, password management, work accounts, two-factor authentication or a primary phone, the answer is generally no. This software is nearly a decade old, lacks modern security support, may fail current app integrity checks and may not satisfy present-day carrier requirements for VoLTE or emergency calling. The Android version number alone does not describe the security-patch level.

CM14.1 can still be reasonable for an offline experiment, a legacy application, hardware restoration, historical preservation or a non-sensitive spare device. Even then, old batteries, flash storage and charging ports can fail during or after the installation.

Safer alternatives

  • Use a newer maintained LineageOS or other aftermarket ROM when a credible device maintainer documents current builds.
  • Keep stock firmware when vendor radio, camera, encryption and reliability matter more than customization.
  • Replace an unsupported phone with a newer used model that has current custom-ROM support instead of forcing Android 7.1 onto unsuitable hardware.

Current LineageOS availability must be checked for the exact device; historical CM14.1 support does not imply current support, and current support does not prove that a CM14.1 build once existed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CM14.1 Android 7.1?

It is based on Android 7.1 Nougat (API 25), not stock Android 7.1 itself.

Can I install CM14.1 on any Android phone?

No. The exact model, codename, chipset, region, firmware and recovery must match a device-specific build.

Is LineageOS 14.1 the same as CM14.1?

No. LineageOS is the successor project and uses different branding and packages, even where the Android base is closely related.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Google Apps?

Only if you want Google services. The package must match Android 7.1, CPU architecture and the device’s system-space limits.

Can CM14.1 run modern banking apps?

Do not rely on it. Old security patches and failed modern integrity checks can prevent banking and other sensitive apps from working safely.

The Bottom Line

CM14 and CM14.1 remain useful historical ROMs, but they are not current products. Verify the exact codename and provenance of every file, keep a stock-firmware recovery plan, and choose a maintained ROM or newer device for sensitive daily use.
