Cloudflare R2 alternatives depend on which problem you are solving. R2 is S3-compatible object storage with free direct internet egress, while durable event streaming is a separate category. For object storage, compare R2 with services such as Backblaze B2, Amazon S3, Wasabi, Google Cloud Storage and Azure Blob Storage using your request, transfer, retrieval and retention patterns. For event streams, evaluate Cloudflare K2, Confluent Cloud or Azure Event Hubs instead of treating bucket notifications as a Kafka replacement.
Separate object storage from event streaming first
An object store keeps files and blobs addressed by bucket and key. Applications upload, download, list, overwrite and delete objects through an API. An event-streaming service keeps an ordered, durable log that multiple independent consumers can read, checkpoint and replay.

These workloads can work together, but they are not interchangeable. R2 bucket notifications report object-created and object-deleted changes to a Cloudflare Queue. That is useful for triggering image processing, indexing or downstream jobs. It does not, by itself, provide Kafka-style partitions, long-lived replay for many consumer groups or a general-purpose event log.

Cloudflare R2 baseline
R2 provides S3-compatible APIs and integration with Workers. Compatibility reduces migration work, but it does not guarantee that every S3 operation or feature behaves identically. Validate each operation, SDK behavior, multipart workflow, lifecycle rule and access-control requirement against the compatibility documentation before moving production workloads.

Published R2 prices
The following figures are Cloudflare’s published prices checked October 13, 2026. They are list rates, not a prediction of your bill.
| R2 tier | Storage | Class A operations | Class B operations | Transfer or retrieval conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $0.015 per GB-month | $4.50 per million | $0.36 per million | Direct internet egress is free |
| Infrequent Access | $0.01 per GB-month | $9.00 per million | $0.90 per million | $0.01 per GB retrieved and a 30-day minimum storage duration; no free tier |
Standard includes a monthly free allowance of 10 GB-month of storage, 1 million Class A operations and 10 million Class B operations. The allowance does not make R2 free storage: usage above those amounts is billed, and request volume can dominate a workload with frequent small reads or writes.
When R2 is a strong fit
- Public downloads or globally distributed applications where direct internet egress would otherwise be a major cost.
- Workers-based pipelines that need objects and edge compute in the same platform.
- S3 API compatibility is useful and your application uses operations verified in the compatibility documentation.
- Data is accessed often enough that Infrequent Access retrieval fees and minimum duration would be counterproductive.
When to look elsewhere
- Your application depends on an S3 feature that R2 does not support or implements differently.
- Most data is rarely read and the 30-day rule or retrieval fee of a lower-cost tier elsewhere produces a better result.
- You need a durable event log, independent consumer subscriptions, configurable replay and stream-native connectors.
- Your compliance or latency requirements require a specific region or cloud ecosystem that R2 cannot provide for the workload.
Object-storage alternatives
Backblaze B2
Backblaze’s published US-facing price is $6.95 per TB per month. Egress is free up to three times your average monthly stored data; traffic above that allowance is charged at $0.01 per GB. The pricing page also describes unlimited free egress through listed CDN and compute partners. Confirm whether your delivery path qualifies before assuming all downloads are unlimited.
B2 is worth modeling when your stored volume is large, your outbound traffic stays within the allowance, and a straightforward storage rate matters more than edge-platform integration. Compare its API behavior, regions, request charges and lifecycle features with the exact operations your application performs rather than comparing storage alone.

Amazon S3
Amazon S3 has a broad feature and integration ecosystem, but transfer and request charges vary by region, storage class and operation. An official pricing example lists $0.09 per GB for internet transfer out from S3 in Europe (Ireland). That is a regional example, not a universal S3 egress rate. Use the calculator for the region and storage class you will actually deploy.
S3 is generally the safer choice when your architecture already relies on services in the same cloud, advanced policy controls, event integrations or a storage class selected for a known access pattern. Its breadth can cost more than a simpler provider if you do not need those features.
Wasabi, Google Cloud Storage and Azure Blob Storage
Official pricing pages for Wasabi, Google Cloud Storage and Azure Blob Storage were checked, but no directly comparable current US price was established for this guide. Do not infer that any of them is cheaper from a headline storage number. Request charges, operation classes, retrieval fees, network paths, region, redundancy and minimum-retention rules can reverse a storage-only comparison.

How to calculate the real object-storage cost
Start with a monthly usage sheet, not a storage-only ranking. Record average stored GB, data written, data read, object count, list and metadata calls, internet egress, retrieval volume, region, storage class and the number of days each object remains stored.
- Calculate storage. Multiply the average billable GB-month by the tier’s rate. For R2 Standard, 1,000 GB-month before free allowances would be $15 in storage; the free allowance must then be applied to the account’s actual monthly usage.
- Count operations. Separate the operations your SDK generates into the provider’s billable classes. A workload that stores large objects once and reads them occasionally may have little request cost; a workload that polls millions of small objects can have substantial request cost.
- Model transfer. Estimate internet egress by destination and delivery path. R2’s direct egress price is free, while another provider may charge by region or route. A CDN or compute partner can change the result for B2.
- Apply retrieval and duration rules. R2 Infrequent Access adds $0.01 per GB retrieved and requires 30 days of storage. A tier with a lower storage rate can be more expensive when objects are deleted early or read frequently.
- Run high- and low-traffic cases. Calculate a quiet month and a peak month. Include a restore, migration or public-download event so a temporary spike does not surprise you.
Migration checklist for an R2-compatible workload
- Inventory every bucket operation used by the application, including multipart upload, list pagination, metadata headers, presigned requests, deletes and lifecycle transitions.
- Map each operation to the destination’s API and test error codes, consistency behavior, retries and checksum handling.
- Choose a destination region and document where data, replicas, logs and backups will reside.
- Export object keys, metadata, content types, checksums, ownership information and retention settings before copying bytes.
- Copy a representative sample, then verify byte counts, checksums, metadata and application reads.
- Measure request volume and transfer on the test account. Confirm that SDK retries or background listing jobs are not creating unexpected operations.
- Run a dual-write or staged cutover if the application cannot tolerate a write pause. Keep the old bucket read-only until reconciliation is complete.
- Test deletion, restore, legal hold and incident-recovery procedures. A successful copy is not proof that recovery controls work.
Event-streaming alternatives
R2 bucket notifications and Queues
R2 can send object-create and object-delete notifications to a Cloudflare Queue. Rules support prefix and suffix filtering, and up to 100 rules per bucket are documented. Workers can consume the queue, and external HTTP pull is also documented.
This pattern answers a narrow question: what changed in this bucket? It is suitable for asynchronous processing such as generating thumbnails after an upload, updating a search index after a delete or launching a validation job. It should not be described as a durable, general-purpose event stream unless you add a separate log designed for independent consumers and replay.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Cloudflare K2
K2 is Cloudflare’s durable-log service for one or more independent consumers. It is in public beta on Workers Paid, and billing is not enabled during the beta. Cloudflare publishes indicative rates of $0.04 per GB produced, $0.04 per GB consumed and $0.02 per GB-month retained, measured before compression. Treat those figures as estimates rather than current charges.

The beta account storage limit is 10 GB unless a higher limit is requested. Default documented retention is up to 30 days, with longer retention available by request. K2 is the closer fit when your producers and consumers are already in the Workers ecosystem and you need independent subscriptions rather than a one-shot notification.
Confluent Cloud
Confluent Cloud is a managed Apache Kafka platform available on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. Its documented platform components include Kafka Connect for integrations, schema governance and a registry, and Flink for stream processing.
Choose a managed Kafka platform when you need Kafka client compatibility, many consumer groups, established connector ecosystems, schema controls or stream-processing workflows. Cost modeling should include cluster or capacity charges, data-in and data-out paths, storage or retention, connectors and processing components; no single storage-style rate represents the total bill.
Azure Event Hubs
Azure Event Hubs supports Kafka, AMQP 1.0 and HTTPS protocols. It organizes streams with partitions and consumer groups, and documented retention ranges from 1 to 90 days depending on tier.
Best Value
- Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
- Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
- Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
- Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
- 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
Event Hubs is a practical fit for applications that already use Azure identity, monitoring and networking or that need Kafka protocol access without operating Kafka brokers. Select capacity, partitions, retention and consumer-group design from measured throughput rather than message count alone.
Event-stream comparison
| Platform | Primary role | Protocols or consumption model | Retention and limits | Pricing state or model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R2 notifications | Bucket-change notifications | Cloudflare Queue; Workers consumers or external HTTP pull | Up to 100 rules per bucket; prefix and suffix filters | Uses R2 and Queue pricing; not a Kafka-like durable log |
| Cloudflare K2 | Durable log with independent consumers | Stream subscriptions in the Workers ecosystem | 10 GB beta account limit unless increased; default retention maximum 30 days, longer by request | Public beta; billing disabled; indicative $0.04/GB produced, $0.04/GB consumed and $0.02/GB-month retained before compression |
| Confluent Cloud | Managed Apache Kafka platform | Kafka ecosystem, Kafka Connect, schema tools and Flink | Set by topic, cluster and service configuration | Usage and components must be priced for the selected cloud and capacity |
| Azure Event Hubs | Managed event-ingestion and streaming service | Kafka, AMQP 1.0 and HTTPS; partitions and consumer groups | 1–90 days depending on tier | Tier and capacity dependent |
Choosing an event platform by workload
Use R2 notifications when
- An object upload or deletion is the trigger, and each event can be processed asynchronously.
- You do not need multiple independently replaying consumers.
- Prefix and suffix filters can keep unrelated bucket changes out of the queue.
- Processing can tolerate the queue and notification semantics documented for the integration.
Use K2 when
- You want a durable log with separate subscriptions for multiple consumers.
- Workers is your primary runtime and the beta limits fit your test or early production workload.
- A 30-day default retention window is sufficient, or you can request a longer period.
- You understand that the published rate card is indicative during a non-billing beta.
Use managed Kafka when
- Existing applications already use Kafka clients, topics, partitions, offsets or Kafka Connect.
- You need a broad connector ecosystem, schema governance and stream processing.
- Independent teams require separate consumer groups and replay behavior.
Use Event Hubs when
- Azure identity, networking and operations are strategic requirements.
- Producers need Kafka, AMQP or HTTPS without running brokers.
- Partition and consumer-group semantics match your throughput and retention plan.
Architectures that combine storage and streams
Upload-triggered processing
Write the original file to R2, emit an object-created notification, process it with a Worker or queue consumer, and write derived objects back to storage. Use this when the event is a trigger and the source of truth is the object.
Durable event plus object payload
Store large payloads in R2 and publish a compact event containing the bucket, key, checksum, schema version and business identifiers to K2, Kafka or Event Hubs. Consumers read the event log and fetch the object they need. This keeps stream records small while preserving replay through the object reference and retention policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Event-first ingestion
Publish transactional events to a durable stream, have consumers materialize files into R2, and retain the stream for the replay period required by operations. This is better when event order, independent consumers and reprocessing matter more than bucket-change triggers.
Quick Recap
Common pitfalls and fixes
- Calling R2 free storage: storage and operations are billed above the Standard allowance. State the allowance and request rates in every cost model.
- Comparing only dollars per GB: add requests, egress, retrieval, minimum duration and region to the spreadsheet.
- Assuming S3 compatibility is perfect: test the exact API calls, headers, multipart behavior and lifecycle features your application uses.
- Using notifications as a replayable log: move to K2, Kafka or Event Hubs when multiple consumers need independent offsets and retention.
- Ignoring beta status: K2’s published rates are indicative and billing is disabled during the public beta; the 10 GB account limit also applies unless increased.
- Overlooking egress routes: B2’s three-times allowance and partner-based unlimited egress depend on the documented conditions. R2’s free figure applies to direct internet egress.
- Deleting infrequently accessed data early: R2 Infrequent Access has a 30-day minimum duration, so model churn as well as reads.
- Assuming a regional example is universal: the $0.09/GB S3 transfer example is for Europe (Ireland), not every S3 region.
A practical decision sequence
- Classify each data item as an object, an event, or both.
- For objects, record average size, object count, writes, reads, listings, region, retention and monthly egress.
- For events, record producer throughput, peak rate, event size, consumer count, replay window, protocol and connector requirements.
- Eliminate services that fail a required API, protocol, region, compliance control or retention limit.
- Calculate a low, normal and peak monthly bill using the provider’s current calculator and your measured usage.
- Run a proof of concept that tests retries, backpressure, duplicate handling, replay, deletion and disaster recovery.
- Choose the simplest architecture that satisfies the workload: R2 plus notifications for bucket-triggered jobs, or R2 plus a durable stream when independent consumers and replay are required.
