To turn a webpage URL into an image with the CloudConvert API, create a v2 job with a capture-website task, then pass that task to export/url. Set output_format to png or jpg, wait for the job to finish, and retrieve the exported file. The example below uses CloudConvert’s documented job workflow; it has not been live-tested.
CloudConvert API job structure
CloudConvert API v2 creates captures as jobs. The capture task takes the target page URL and output format; the export task provides a URL for downloading the result. The API base is https://api.cloudconvert.com/v2, and the job creation endpoint is POST /jobs. See CloudConvert’s capture-website operation reference and API overview for current parameters and examples.

Choose the capture output and page state
PNG or JPG
Set output_format explicitly. PNG is a lossless image format, which can suit screenshots where preserving fine interface details matters; JPG is a compressed image format. The capture operation also supports PDF output, but this example is configured for an image. Check the operation reference for supported options.

Full page, viewport, and waits
The documented operation captures the full page by default. Optional controls include viewport sizing or resizing and waiting for a CSS selector before capture. Add these only when the page requires a particular viewport or rendered state; they are not required fields for the basic job. A selector wait can help when content appears after initial page load, but choose a selector that reliably exists on the target page. CloudConvert’s Website Screenshot API page gives a configurable example with width and wait_for_element.
Protected pages
For pages that require authorization, CloudConvert documents custom authorization headers as a capture option. Send only credentials needed for the capture, keep them out of public examples and logs, and avoid placing sensitive header values in any system where job details are broadly visible. The documentation does not establish a blanket data-retention or data-residency guarantee for every configuration.

Retrieve the screenshot from the completed job
- Submit the job to
POST https://api.cloudconvert.com/v2/jobsand retain the returned job details or job ID. - Wait for the job to complete. CloudConvert describes asynchronous jobs with webhook notification by default and a synchronous option for workflows that need an immediate result.
- Read the result of the
export-screenshottask and download the file from its export URL. CloudConvert’s quickstart says export URLs are valid for 24 hours, so retrieve the image promptly. If you need it for longer, store the downloaded file using a storage workflow appropriate to your application.
For deployment locations, API v2 supports automatic region selection and lists region-specific endpoints for Germany (eu-central) and Virginia, USA (us-east). Consult the API introduction for endpoint details; regional endpoints alone should not be treated as a general compliance or retention guarantee.
Handle errors and operational limits
Build job creation, completion, and download as separate failure points. CloudConvert’s API introduction describes HTTP errors including 422, 500, 503, and 429. Some endpoints provide rate-limit information in response headers such as Retry-After; the documentation does not establish one universal rate limit for every endpoint or account.

Retry-Aftervalue when present, and avoid assuming an undocumented fixed request allowance. - 500 or 503: Treat the response as a server-side or availability failure, record the request/job context without secrets, and retry according to your application’s retry policy.
- Job created but no file downloaded: Confirm the job and both tasks reached completion, then inspect the export task result rather than assuming the capture request itself returned image bytes.
- Export link no longer works: The quickstart states export URLs last 24 hours; create or retrieve the output again if the link has expired.
CloudConvert displays a starting price of $0.008 per file on its Website Screenshot API page, accessed in 2026. That is a vendor-listed starting price, not a quote for a particular volume, configuration, or account; confirm current pricing and terms on the product page. The documentation does not provide a broadly applicable performance benchmark, so allow for page loading and asynchronous job completion rather than assuming a fixed capture time.
