Indian equities closed higher on Monday, 5 October 2026: the Sensex added 472.77 points and the Nifty gained 133.80 points. The rebound followed eight consecutive weeks of weekly declines and ended a separate four-session daily losing streak, but one positive close does not establish that the broader selloff has ended.

One up day followed eight weeks of weekly declines
The daily rise came after eight consecutive weeks of declines. The Economic Times described the Nifty’s fall over that run as about 8.7%; that is the newspaper’s reported figure, rather than an independently verified calculation here. A weekly losing streak and a daily losing streak refer to different time periods: Monday’s rise ended the latter, while the eight-week sequence describes the preceding weekly trend.

Monday’s session also snapped four consecutive daily declines, according to contemporary coverage. Neither a single up day nor the end of that daily streak demonstrates that a sustained market recovery has begun.
