Clonezilla is one of the strongest free choices for cloning a drive or creating a disk image if you are comfortable booting into a text-based environment and your source drive can be unmounted. It is not the right fit if you need to clone a running system, browse an image for individual files, or expect a larger replacement drive to expand your partitions automatically.
Does Clonezilla still deserve the “best free” label?
That depends on what “best” means for your job. Clonezilla is free, open-source software under GPL version 2, and it supports both direct disk-to-disk cloning and disk or partition images. Its trade-off is a bootable, menu-driven workflow rather than a graphical desktop app.

Clonezilla’s age claim also needs a precise description: the project says Clonezilla Server Edition (SE) has been developed since 2004. That is more than 20 years ago, but it is not the same as a verified first-public-release date for the entire Clonezilla project.
For one computer, Clonezilla Live is the relevant edition. Clonezilla lite server and Clonezilla SE are intended for larger deployment workflows. The current build can change: the official download selector and release notes have shown different version strings, so use the official Clonezilla download page to choose the version available for your needs rather than assuming those entries describe the same build.

What Clonezilla can clone and image
Clonezilla can save or restore disk and partition images, or copy one disk directly to another. For filesystems it supports, it copies used blocks with Partclone; for unsupported filesystems, it falls back to sector-by-sector copying with dd. Its published list includes Linux filesystems, Windows FAT, NTFS and exFAT, macOS HFS+ and APFS, BSD UFS, Minix, and VMware VMFS3 and VMFS5. Btrfs is listed as testing, so do not treat its support status as equivalent to the listed supported filesystems.
The project also lists support for LVM2, LUKS, MBR and GPT. Clonezilla Live’s published minimum requirements include an x86 or x86-64 processor, 196 MB of RAM, and a boot device such as USB, CD/DVD, PXE or a hard drive. The RAM figure is the project’s stated minimum, not a recommendation for a modern general-purpose computer.

When Clonezilla is a good fit—and when it is not

These limits matter more than the tool’s age. If the computer is running from the drive you want to copy, Clonezilla’s offline approach means you need to boot from separate media and ensure the source partition is not mounted. If you mainly need to restore individual files from images, compare a tool that advertises image browsing instead.
How to clone or restore safely
Clonezilla Live boots from prepared media, such as a bootable USB drive. Its official usage guide covers saving an image, restoring an image and cloning disk to disk. Before starting, identify the source and destination carefully: a restore or clone writes to the target, so selecting the wrong disk can overwrite data you meant to keep.

- Prepare and boot Clonezilla Live. Create boot media, then start the computer from it. The exact boot-menu key and media-creation steps depend on the computer and the method you use.
- Choose the operation. Follow the Clonezilla menus for disk-to-disk cloning, saving an image, or restoring an image. For a restore, check the image’s integrity before writing it to the destination; the official walkthrough recommends this check so you can detect a damaged image before relying on it.
- Confirm source and destination. Verify the selected disks by their identifiers and capacities before proceeding. Keep a separate backup of important data rather than treating the clone or image as the only copy.
- Allow the operation to finish, then check the result. If you cloned to a larger drive, inspect its partition layout afterward; unused capacity may need a separate partition-resizing step.
Will a larger replacement drive use all its space?
Not automatically. Clonezilla’s documented example copies a 20 GB disk to a 60 GB disk while keeping the original partition sizes by default, leaving unused space on the destination. The guide describes proportional partition-table creation as an option for spreading partitions across more of the target capacity. Cloning the data successfully and expanding partitions to use the drive are separate outcomes.
Also check that each destination partition is at least as large as its corresponding source partition. A drive’s overall advertised capacity alone does not guarantee that every partition will fit under the layout you are copying.

Clonezilla or a graphical alternative?
If the text-based menus are the obstacle, Rescuezilla presents itself as a graphical alternative and says it can restore Clonezilla images, and vice versa. It also advertises browsing images. Those are Rescuezilla’s own compatibility and feature claims, not independent comparative tests of reliability, speed or ease of use. Check its current documentation before depending on image compatibility for an important recovery.
Choose based on the task: Clonezilla is a credible free option for offline whole-disk or partition imaging and cloning when you can work through its boot-and-menu process. A graphical tool may suit you better if you value image browsing or a GUI, while a live-cloning requirement rules out Clonezilla’s documented workflow.
