Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Start with sealed in-ear noise-cancelling earbuds if you need to focus on audio in a commute, on a flight, or in a noisy office. One important distinction: “clip-on” describes how earbuds stay on your ear, while “open-ear” describes the fit or sound approach, so a clip-on earbud can also be open-ear.
What is the difference between clip-on, open-ear and noise-cancelling earbuds?
These labels describe different things, not three mutually exclusive categories. Clip-on refers to retention: the earbud attaches to the outer ear rather than being held in place by an in-ear seal. Open-ear refers to a design that leaves the ear canal unblocked, whether or not the earbud clips on. Noise-cancelling earbuds generally use a sealed in-ear fit and active noise cancellation (ANC) to reduce ambient sound, although ANC does not eliminate all noise.

For example, Shokz describes its OpenDots 2 as both clip-on and open-ear. Its OpenFit Pro is another open-ear example; Shokz says it combines an unblocked ear canal with noise reduction. That manufacturer wording should not be taken to mean it offers the same isolation as sealed in-ear ANC earbuds.
Which type suits the way you listen?
| Your priority | Better starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Avoiding an in-ear seal | Clip-on or another open-ear design | Check whether the shape suits your ears, stays secure, and remains comfortable over the time you intend to wear it. In a noisy place, audio may be harder to hear. |
| Hearing some nearby sound | Open-ear | Open fit can let environmental sound reach your ears, but playback can still mask it. It is not a guarantee of awareness or safety. |
| Reducing ambient noise for focused listening | Sealed in-ear ANC | Fit and ear tips affect the seal. Consider comfort, ANC in the noise conditions you encounter, and how any transparency or ambient mode behaves. |
| Taking calls in noisy places | Compare specific models | Microphone results depend on the model; a general design label does not establish call quality. |
| Use during exercise or in rain | Compare ratings and fit | Check which component a water-resistance rating covers, and whether the fit stays secure during your activity. |
What do current examples tell you?
Specifications help narrow a shortlist, but they do not establish which earbuds sound better, feel more comfortable, or perform best in real conditions. The figures below are manufacturer-published details, not results from a like-for-like independent test.

Battery estimates depend on settings, environment, storage, and use; they are not guarantees of everyday endurance. The OpenDots 2 earbuds and charging case have separate protection ratings, so do not apply one component’s rating to the other. Prices and availability can change.
What to check before choosing
- Fit and comfort: Try to assess how the design sits on your ear and whether it remains comfortable over your typical listening session. There is no universal comfort winner.
- Isolation and leakage: Open-ear designs leave the canal unsealed, so expect less passive isolation than from a well-sealed in-ear fit. Consider whether people nearby might hear your playback.
- Listening environment: If noise makes open-ear audio difficult to hear, raising the volume is not a good workaround. Sealed ANC is a more suitable starting point when reducing ambient noise matters.
- Calls and device switching: Compare microphone performance and multipoint or other switching features on the exact models you are considering; the category alone does not predict them.
- Battery and water protection: Check battery claims for the listening mode and settings you will use, and read ratings separately for earbuds and case.
Can open-ear earbuds make listening safer?
They may leave you able to hear some surrounding sound, but that does not guarantee you will notice hazards: audio playback can mask environmental sound. Nor does an open ear make loud listening safe. The World Health Organization warns that regularly listening to music or other audio at high volume through personal audio devices can harm hearing. Keep the volume moderate, take breaks, and do not turn it up to overpower noise. WHO advises carefully fitted headphones, if possible noise cancelling; that general guidance is not evidence that any named model prevents hearing damage.

How to make the decision
- If avoiding an in-ear seal is your priority, shortlist clip-on or other open-ear models and check their fit, security, and leakage.
- If focused listening in noisy settings matters more, start with sealed in-ear ANC models and assess the seal, comfort, and noise control for your usual environment.
- Compare the exact models, including calls, switching, relevant battery estimates, protection ratings, and current local price. The available specifications do not provide a like-for-like independent test across these designs.
- Choose based on your actual listening setting, not on “open,” “clip-on,” or “noise-cancelling” as a guarantee of comfort, safety, or performance.
