ClickFix Malware Explained: How Fake Error Messages Trick Users Into Running Code

ClickFix is a social-engineering technique, not a single virus. A malicious page imitates a CAPTCHA, browser crash, document warning, meeting app, or Windows error and instructs you to “fix” it by opening Run or a terminal, pasting text, and pressing Enter. The pasted text can download malware, steal credentials, or give an attacker control of the device.

If a site asks you to paste a command you did not deliberately copy, stop. Close the page without pressing Enter. Legitimate CAPTCHA and browser-error workflows do not require an unexplained shell command.

What ClickFix malware actually means

“ClickFix” describes the deception and execution method rather than one malware family. Attackers use a fake error or verification screen to persuade a person to run attacker-supplied code. MITRE ATT&CK records the behavior as T1204.004 User Execution: Malicious Copy and Paste. The command may be obfuscated so that a short-looking line conceals downloads, PowerShell activity, or other actions.

The technique is effective because the victim performs the final execution step. A mail gateway may block an obvious executable attachment, and a browser may sandbox a downloaded file, but those protections are less useful when a user pastes a command into a trusted shell. MITRE specifically notes that this user-execution step can help attackers bypass filtering, browser sandboxing, and controls aimed at malicious files.

Early campaigns copied Google “Aw, Snap!” crash pages and missing Word Online extension messages. Later campaigns imitated Google reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, browser updates, Google Meet, OneDrive and other familiar services. A fake Blue Screen of Death is another variation: the visual looks alarming, then offers a supposed recovery action.

How a ClickFix attack works

The details vary by campaign, but the sequence usually follows the same pattern.

Stage What the victim sees or does What the attacker is trying to achieve
Arrival A phishing message, malicious advertisement, redirect, compromised website, malicious URL, or HTML attachment opens a lure. Get the victim onto attacker-controlled content.
Trust cue The page resembles a CAPTCHA, browser warning, document viewer, meeting service, update prompt, or system error. Make an unusual instruction appear routine and urgent.
Clipboard manipulation Clicking “How to fix,” “Fix it,” or a human-verification control appears to advance the check. Use JavaScript, including navigator.clipboard.writeText, to place a command in the clipboard.
User execution The page says to press Win+R, open PowerShell, Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, or an equivalent shell, press Ctrl+V, then press Enter. Have the victim execute the command with their own permissions.
Payload and persistence The command runs scripts or retrieves additional files. Steal data, establish access, contact command-and-control systems, and maintain access through scheduled tasks or startup entries.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security calls this “pastejacking”: the attacker manipulates the clipboard, then relies on the user to paste and run the contents. The clipboard itself is not proof that a machine is infected; execution is the dangerous step.

Why the fake instruction feels believable

It borrows workflows people already know

People are accustomed to solving access problems with a CAPTCHA, installing a browser extension, accepting an update, or repairing a document. A page that says “verify you are human” and adds a “Fix it” button exploits that expectation. Proofpoint’s Threat Research Team described the technique on November 18, 2024 as dialogue boxes containing fake errors that trick people into copying, pasting, and running malicious content.

It creates urgency and reduces inspection

Error colors, countdowns, logos, and instructions such as “complete verification to continue” encourage a quick response. The victim may never read the command because the page frames the action as a routine repair. Obfuscation can also make the pasted line difficult to recognize as a download or script launcher.

It can appear on an otherwise legitimate site

Attackers have used compromised websites and traffic-direction systems, so a familiar domain or a search result does not guarantee that every page element is safe. Microsoft documented Storm-1607 campaigns using HTML attachments from March through June 2024 and later URL-based campaigns involving compromised sites. The page’s behavior matters more than its branding.

Recognizing a ClickFix lure

  • A web page tells you to open Win+R, PowerShell, Command Prompt, Terminal, or another shell.
  • A CAPTCHA or “Verify you are human” step requires copying or pasting a command.
  • A browser, Word, OneDrive, Google Meet, or Cloudflare-style error offers an “Auto-fix,” “How to fix,” or “Fix it” button.
  • The page tells you to paste text that you did not intentionally copy.
  • You are asked to disable antivirus, browser protections, or other security controls.
  • The prompt appeared after an unsolicited email, advertisement, redirect, or unexpected attachment.

A normal CAPTCHA may ask you to identify images, enter displayed characters, or complete an interaction in the browser. It does not require an unexplained command in a system shell. A browser crash page may suggest reloading or closing a tab; it does not need you to run a PowerShell one-liner.

What ClickFix can install

There is no fixed “ClickFix payload.” The command is a delivery mechanism, and campaigns can change what they deliver. ESET’s 2025 reporting lists infostealers, ransomware, remote-access trojans, cryptominers, post-exploitation tools, and custom malware among observed outcomes. Named examples in the cited reporting include DarkGate, Lumma Stealer, VidarStealer, StealC, Danabot, AsyncRAT, VenomRAT, NetSupport RAT, Havoc, Cobalt Strike, and Interlock ransomware. The Cyber Security Agency separately lists DCRAT, NetSupport RAT, Latrodectus, and Lumma Stealer.

Potential consequences include browser-cookie and session theft, password theft, cryptocurrency theft, data exfiltration, remote control, account compromise, privilege escalation, and lateral movement into other systems. A command may first perform reconnaissance, then download a second-stage script, create a scheduled task or startup entry, and contact command-and-control infrastructure. One Microsoft Lampion case study documents this kind of multi-stage progression.

How widespread is the technique?

Available figures are vendor or government telemetry, not a universal count of every ClickFix infection. They show that the method became substantially more common during 2024 and 2025.

Measure Reported result Scope and date
HTML/FakeCaptcha detections 517% increase ESET comparison of the second half of 2024 with the first half of 2025.
Share of blocked attacks Nearly 8% ESET telemetry for HTML/FakeCaptcha detections in the first half of 2025.
TA571 campaign email volume More than 100,000 messages HHS Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center report in 2024, targeting thousands of organizations globally.
Geographic distribution 23% Japan; 6% Peru; more than 5% each Poland, Spain, and Slovakia ESET detections reported for the first half of 2025.

These percentages describe the reporting organizations’ observed detections. They should not be read as the percentage of all internet users who encountered ClickFix or as a worldwide infection rate.

What to do when you see the prompt but have not run it

  1. Do not paste or press Enter. Do not open Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Terminal to inspect the supplied text.
  2. Close the tab or browser window. If the page is unresponsive, use the browser’s normal close or force-close option rather than following its instructions.
  3. Do not copy the command to another device. Clipboard contents can be malicious even when they look like ordinary text.
  4. Report the message or page. Use your organization’s phishing-report process, the mail provider’s report function, or the website owner’s abuse channel.
  5. Delete an unexpected attachment only after reporting it if your organization requires preserving evidence; otherwise follow your IT team’s instructions.

Simply viewing a lure does not establish that malware ran. The critical distinction is whether the supplied command was executed.

What to do if you pasted and ran the command

Treat execution as a potential security incident, even if nothing obvious happened on screen. Do not continue troubleshooting through the suspicious page.

  1. Disconnect the device where practical. Unplug the network cable or disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if your organization’s incident procedure allows it. A managed corporate device should be handled according to the security team’s containment instructions.
  2. Contact IT or an incident-response team immediately. Tell them exactly when you ran the command, which page displayed it, what account was logged in, and whether the device was connected to business systems.
  3. Use a known-clean device to change exposed credentials. Prioritize email, browser-synchronized accounts, VPN access, financial services, and administrator accounts. Do not change passwords from the potentially compromised computer.
  4. Revoke active sessions where the service supports it. Session cookies can remain useful to an attacker even after a password change. Ask IT to invalidate tokens and review multifactor-authentication methods.
  5. Preserve evidence. Record the URL, the email or advertisement that led to it, the approximate time, screenshots, and any command text without executing it again. Do not wipe or reinstall the machine before responders advise you.
  6. Let responders examine persistence and lateral movement. The investigation may need to check scheduled tasks, startup entries, PowerShell history, browser profiles, endpoint alerts, and neighboring accounts or systems.

ClickFix payloads can disable security tools, so an apparently clean antivirus result is not conclusive. If the device contains sensitive data or has administrator access, professional incident response is preferable to an improvised cleanup.

Controls that reduce organizational risk

Block or constrain execution

MITRE lists application control and PowerShell Constrained Language Mode as mitigations for T1204.004. Application control can prevent unapproved interpreters or scripts from running, while constrained language reduces what PowerShell can do when a user is tricked. Policies should be tested against legitimate administrative workflows before broad enforcement.

Reduce exposure to the lure

Restrict suspicious or unnecessary web content, filter malicious attachments and URLs, and use network intrusion prevention. Email and web controls should be paired with user education that specifically says a CAPTCHA never needs a shell command; generic “watch for phishing” training often misses this scenario.

Detect the browser-to-shell pattern

Detection teams should look for a browser or email process leading to Run, PowerShell, CMD, or Terminal, particularly when the command is an obfuscated one-liner. MITRE identifies this browser-or-email-to-shell sequence as the analytic pattern associated with T1204.004. Correlating process creation, command-line logging, clipboard-related events where available, DNS requests, and new scheduled tasks can expose the chain even when the initial page has disappeared.

Plan for credential and lateral-movement impact

Controls should not stop at blocking the first script. Endpoint protection, application control, managed detection, network segmentation, least privilege, multifactor authentication, and a practiced isolation process help limit what a stolen session or remote-access trojan can do. Coverage should include Windows, macOS, and Linux: MITRE lists all three desktop platforms for this technique, and HHS documented a 2024 campaign affecting both Windows and macOS users.

How ClickFix differs across operating systems

Windows campaigns commonly name Win+R, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Windows Terminal because those tools are familiar and widely available. On macOS or Linux, the same social-engineering idea can direct a user to an equivalent shell or terminal workflow. The keyboard shortcut and command syntax may differ, but the warning is the same: a website should not need you to run an unexplained command to prove that you are human or repair a page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organizations should therefore avoid a Windows-only policy. Web filtering, application control, script restrictions, endpoint telemetry, and user reporting need platform-appropriate implementations. A macOS campaign is not harmless simply because it cannot use Win+R.

The practical rule

ClickFix turns a fake error into a request for user execution. If the “fix” involves opening a shell and pasting text supplied by the page, stop treating it as a normal verification step. Close the page if you have not run anything; if you have, disconnect where practical, involve IT or incident response, and change exposed credentials from a clean device. The specific malware can change from campaign to campaign, but the unsafe action remains the same: pasting and running code you did not intentionally obtain and verify.
