Why the search-result fare is not the price you pay
Flight sites can display a low fare before passenger details, payment method and optional services are applied. A fair comparison therefore uses the same itinerary and reaches the payment step on both sites.

Build an identical comparison
- Use the same origin, destination, dates and departure-time preferences.
- Enter the same number and type of passengers, including adults, children and infants.
- Select the same flight number, cabin, fare family and baggage entitlement. A basic fare on one site is not comparable with a flexible fare on the other.
- Choose the same seats, meals, insurance or protection options—or remove all optional products for a bare-fare comparison.
- Record the total immediately before payment, including taxes, convenience fees, payment charges and discounts.
MakeMyTrip says its payment-page total usually includes the base fare, government taxes and convenience fee. Cleartrip separately publishes its platform cancellation and amendment fees, so a fee that is not visible in the initial fare may still matter later. Do not subtract a headline coupon from one site while leaving an add-on selected on the other.
A simple way to calculate value
For a no-change trip, compare the final payable amount. For a trip with uncertainty, compare the final amount plus the likely cost of changing or cancelling. A cheaper ticket can be poor value if its fare rules make a likely change expensive.
For example, if one checkout is ₹5,800 and another is ₹5,950, the ₹150 difference is less important than whether the second booking includes a protection product you genuinely need. Conversely, do not pay for protection merely because the label sounds reassuring; confirm exactly what event triggers a refund and what remains payable.
Cleartrip cancellation charges and refund limits
Cleartrip’s current FAQ states a platform cancellation charge of ₹400 per passenger per sector for domestic cancellations and ₹1,000 for international cancellations. Those amounts are in addition to charges imposed by the airline. “Per sector” means each flight leg is counted separately; a connecting itinerary can therefore involve more than one sector.
Cancellation timing
The same FAQ says cancellation is generally available until three hours before scheduled departure. The word “generally” matters: the airline’s fare conditions, no-show rules, route and booking status can still restrict a refund. After the permitted window, an airline may treat the passenger as a no-show, often with a different refund outcome.
What the refund calculation can contain
- The airline’s cancellation penalty or non-refundable fare component.
- Cleartrip’s platform charge.
- Taxes or government fees that are refundable or non-refundable under the fare rules.
- Any paid seat, meal, baggage or other service whose own terms differ from the ticket.
- A payment or convenience fee that the applicable terms exclude from refunds.
Before confirming cancellation, open the booking’s fare rules and refund breakdown. Save a screenshot or PDF showing the amount offered and the cancellation time. If the airline has already cancelled or materially changed the flight, follow the disruption process rather than treating the event as a voluntary cancellation; the applicable remedy can be different.
ClearChoice Plus: when Cleartrip’s rescheduling option helps
ClearChoice Plus is a paid flexibility option for changing the travel date. Under the cited terms, it allows rescheduling up to 12 hours before departure. For Air India and Vistara, the cited terms use a 24-hour cut-off. The product does not make every change free: the customer remains responsible for the fare difference and amendment charges above the stated ₹3,550 threshold.

- Whether the exact flight and fare are eligible; eligibility is shown during booking.
- Which departure cut-off applies to that airline and itinerary.
- Whether the new date has seats in an eligible fare family.
- How the threshold is applied when the new fare is higher.
- Whether a change is allowed once, multiple times or only under other limits stated on the offer screen.
ClearChoice Plus is most useful when a date change is plausible but cancellation is not. If you expect to abandon the trip altogether, read the cancellation terms instead of assuming a rescheduling product will produce a cash refund.

MakeMyTrip Zero Cancellation: useful, but conditional
MakeMyTrip’s terms describe Zero Cancellation as an optional product starting at ₹149 per passenger. The cited terms include eligibility conditions, require the cancellation request at least 24 hours before departure, and state that the convenience fee is non-refundable. The starting price is not a promise that every passenger, route or fare will receive that price.
Questions to answer on the offer screen
- Is the flight and fare eligible for Zero Cancellation?
- What amount is actually waived, and which airline or platform charges remain?
- Does the 24-hour requirement run from scheduled departure, the first sector or another time defined in the terms?
- Are seats, ancillary services and convenience fees treated separately?
- What happens if the airline changes or cancels the flight?
Because the convenience fee is non-refundable, include it when comparing the protected and unprotected totals. A product can be worthwhile when the probability and cost of cancelling are high, but it may add unnecessary cost to a firm itinerary.
MakeMyTrip Price Drop Protection
Price Drop Protection is a separate optional add-on. Its terms allow a fare-difference refund if the same flight’s applicable fare drops after booking and before the six-hour-before-departure cut-off, provided the add-on was selected at purchase.
“Same flight” and “applicable fare” are important
A lower price on a different flight, a different cabin, a different fare family or a fare with different baggage is not automatically a qualifying drop. The comparison must use the conditions defined by the terms. Promotional inventory can also disappear before a claim is made.
When it can make sense
- Prices are volatile and the add-on cost is modest relative to the possible drop.
- You are booking well before departure and can monitor the same flight.
- You understand the claim deadline and documentation requirements.
Do not treat Price Drop Protection as cancellation insurance. It addresses a qualifying fare reduction, not a change of plans, missed flight or airline disruption.
Airline control and disruption handling
Booking through either platform does not transfer operational control from the airline. MakeMyTrip’s user agreement says: “Airlines retain the right to reschedule flight times, route, change or cancel flights or itineraries independent of and without prior intimation to MMT.” The practical implication is that a travel site can process a request, but it cannot guarantee that an airline will operate at the originally published time.
If the airline changes or cancels your flight
- Check the airline’s notification and the booking record on the site where you purchased the ticket.
- Identify whether the event is an airline-initiated disruption or a voluntary change.
- Read the rebooking, credit or refund choices offered for that specific flight.
- Contact the booking platform through the channel attached to the reservation if the airline directs you back to the intermediary.
- Keep the original schedule, notification, case number and any acceptance of a replacement itinerary.
Do not cancel a disrupted booking voluntarily before checking the remedy. A voluntary cancellation can invoke ordinary fare penalties even when an airline-initiated cancellation would have different options.

Coverage, inventory and payment offers
There is no universal winner for flight availability. The same route can show different fare classes, connecting combinations or payment promotions at different times. Compare the exact flight number and fare family, not just the lowest displayed amount.

Check baggage and fare conditions
- Confirm cabin and checked-baggage allowances in kilograms or pieces.
- Check whether a connection is protected on one ticket or requires separate tickets.
- Read refund, no-show and date-change rules for every sector.
- Verify passenger-name, infant and student-fare requirements before payment.
Evaluate payment discounts correctly
A bank or wallet offer can change the final total, but eligibility may depend on the card, transaction value, payment channel or minimum spend. Apply the same eligible payment method where possible. If only one site accepts your method, record that limitation rather than calling its pre-discount fare cheaper.
Step-by-step: compare both sites before booking
- Search both sites. Enter identical airports, dates and passenger counts. Note the search timestamp because airline inventory can change.
- Match the flight. Select the same flight number, cabin, fare family and connection pattern.
- Open fare details. Read cancellation, no-show, date-change and baggage rules before adding extras.
- Remove or match add-ons. Compare a bare fare first. Then run a second comparison with the protection product you would actually buy.
- Enter passenger information. Use the same spelling and passenger categories; errors here can change eligibility or require a correction.
- Advance to payment. Record base fare, taxes, convenience fee, payment fee, discount and total. Do not complete payment until both totals are captured.
- Test the risk scenario. If your dates may change, calculate the cost under the relevant Cleartrip or MakeMyTrip terms, including cut-off times and non-refundable fees.
- Save evidence. Keep the fare rules, add-on terms, total, booking reference and payment receipt.
Labels vary by app and website version, but the relevant screens are normally the flight results, fare-details panel, passenger-information page, add-on selection and payment summary.

You want the lowest confirmed price
Choose whichever site has the lower like-for-like payment total after taxes, convenience fees, payment charges and selected services. The initial search result is not sufficient evidence.
Your dates may move
Compare the cost of the ClearChoice Plus option with the cost of buying a flexible fare on either site. Cleartrip is the stronger candidate when its rescheduling window covers your uncertainty and the total remains competitive. Confirm the applicable airline cut-off and the treatment of fare differences.
You might cancel rather than rebook
Examine MakeMyTrip Zero Cancellation only if the flight is eligible and you can meet its cited 24-hour deadline. Compare the add-on and non-refundable convenience fee with the ordinary airline and platform penalties. Cleartrip’s published platform charge makes the baseline easier to identify, but airline deductions still determine the final refund.
You are worried that the fare will fall
MakeMyTrip Price Drop Protection is the relevant product when the same flight’s fare may decline. Check the six-hour claim cut-off and the definition of an applicable fare before paying for it.
You are booking an international itinerary
Pay close attention to sector count, currency conversion, airline penalties and connection rules. Cleartrip’s published international platform cancellation amount is higher than its domestic amount, and airline charges can be substantially larger or governed by a different fare family.

The airline is known to change schedules
Prioritize a platform with a support path you can access quickly and save every notification. The airline still controls the operation, so no intermediary protection product guarantees the original schedule.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing different fare families
A low, no-bag fare can look cheaper than a fare that includes checked luggage and changes. Expand the fare rules and compare the same inclusions.
Ignoring the sector basis
On a connection, a per-sector fee can apply to more than one leg. Count the sectors before estimating a cancellation refund.
Buying protection after the fact
Zero Cancellation and Price Drop Protection are optional products selected during booking. Do not assume they can be added after a fare has been issued.

Missing a time cut-off
Protection terms use precise deadlines. Set a reminder in the departure time zone and act before the stated window, not at the airport.
Assuming “zero” means every rupee is refundable
Read which airline charges, convenience fees, taxes, ancillaries and add-on costs are excluded. A product name is not a substitute for the exclusions section.
Accepting a replacement flight without checking consequences
When an airline changes your itinerary, verify baggage, connection time and the return sector before accepting. Save the original and revised schedules.
