There is no single best TV for the clearest picture. A dim, movie-focused room generally favors an OLED such as the LG G6 OLED, while a sunlit room benefits more from the brightness and reflection control of the Sony BRAVIA 9 II Mini-LED. The LG C6 OLED 2026 is the more affordable OLED choice in RTINGS’ movie guide, and What Hi-Fi?’s June 2026 guide names the Sony Bravia 8 II its overall pick. Treat these as room- and use-case recommendations, not a universal ranking.
Quick verdict: which TV has the clearest picture?
| Use case | Recommended model | Why it stands out | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best picture for dark-room movies | LG G6 OLED | Pixel-level black control, strong HDR impact, accurate and vibrant color, wide viewing angles, glare handling, and strong upscaling | Its advantages matter most when you can control room light and have the budget for a flagship OLED |
| Upper mid-range movie TV | LG C6 OLED 2026 | OLED contrast, wide viewing angles, and strong processing at a lower position in the range | Colors are less punchy and less accurate out of the box than the G6, HDR highlights are dimmer, and glare is more distracting |
| Best for a bright room | Sony BRAVIA 9 II Mini-LED | High peak brightness, reflection handling, accurate images, and strong upscaling | It is less convincing than an OLED in a completely dark room and shows more motion blur behind fast-moving objects |
| Alternative overall pick in a UK guide | Sony Bravia 8 II | 4K QD-OLED image, deep blacks, shadow detail, Google TV, Dolby Vision, and two HDMI 2.1 sockets | Some rivals are brighter, and two HDMI 2.1 ports may be limiting for several high-bandwidth devices |
These recommendations reflect RTINGS’ 2026 movie and current-TV guides and What Hi-Fi?’s guide published June 11, 2026. RTINGS changed several picks in a September 15, 2026 refresh, so model availability, sizes, suffixes, and rankings should be checked before buying.

What makes a TV look clear?
Resolution is only one part of perceived clarity. A 4K label tells you the panel has roughly 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, but it does not tell you how well the set preserves detail in shadows, controls glare, handles motion, or improves a low-quality source. For films and television, evaluate the complete image chain.

Contrast and black level
Dark scenes reveal whether a TV can keep black areas dark while preserving small highlights. OLED controls light at each pixel and can switch individual pixels off. That produces very deep blacks and avoids the glow around bright details that can appear when an LCD backlight cannot isolate a small object. This is why OLED remains a compelling choice for dark-room movie viewing.

Mini-LED is an LCD design with many small backlight zones. Local dimming can substantially improve black levels over a conventional edge-lit LCD, but a zone is larger than a pixel. A bright subtitle or star field can therefore produce a halo, often called blooming, and the visibility of that effect varies by model and scene.
HDR brightness and color volume
High dynamic range is most convincing when a TV can show both a dark background and a bright highlight at the same time. Look for the impact of specular details such as sunlight, fire, reflections, and neon signs, not merely a larger brightness number. Color volume also matters: a set should retain saturated color as highlights become brighter instead of washing out.
Processing and upscaling
Most households watch a mixture of native 4K streams, older Blu-rays, DVDs, broadcast channels, and compressed online video. Upscaling reconstructs detail when the source has fewer pixels than the panel. Good processing also reduces blocking, banding, ringing, and noise without smearing fine texture. RTINGS specifically highlights strong processing and upscaling for the LG G6, LG C6, and Sony BRAVIA 9 II.
Reflections and viewing angle
A glossy screen can deliver rich contrast in a controlled room but reveal windows and lamps. A brighter panel with effective reflection handling may look clearer during daytime even if its black level is not as deep. If people sit far to the side, check how quickly contrast and color change off-axis. The LG G6 and C6 retain wide-angle strengths, while the Sony BRAVIA 9 II is aimed at overcoming difficult room light.
Motion
Fast camera pans, sports, and action scenes expose motion handling. Pixel response, refresh behavior, and image-processing choices all affect whether moving objects look sharp or leave trails. RTINGS notes more motion blur behind fast-moving objects on the BRAVIA 9 II than on its OLED alternative, so a bright room is not the only factor for sports or gaming buyers.
OLED versus Mini-LED for picture quality
Why OLED excels in dark rooms
- Each pixel emits its own light and can turn off, producing very deep blacks.
- There is no LCD backlight zone surrounding a highlight, so subtitles and stars do not create zone-shaped halos.
- High contrast makes shadow detail and small bright objects appear more defined in a dark room.
- Wide viewing angles are common among the recommended OLED models.
OLED models can cost more, and brightness and reflection handling differ substantially between generations and product lines. Do not assume that every OLED has the same daytime performance or HDR output.

When Mini-LED is the better choice
- High peak brightness helps overcome daylight and makes HDR highlights visible with lamps or windows on.
- Local dimming improves LCD black levels while preserving a bright full-screen image.
- Reflection handling can matter more than absolute black level in a sunlit living room.
Mini-LED remains an LCD technology. Dimming zones can show blooming around subtitles or isolated highlights, and the severity depends on the model’s zone count, algorithms, and the content being displayed.
Recommended TVs in detail
LG G6 OLED: the strongest movie-first choice
RTINGS’ 2026 movie guide calls the LG G6 OLED its best TV for movies. Its core advantage is the combination of OLED black control and a bright, capable HDR presentation. Bright highlights remain impactful against deep blacks, while color is described as both vibrant and accurate.
The G6 also addresses practical sources of softness. Its upscaling and image processing are strong for lower-resolution discs and compressed streams, and its wide viewing angles help when seats are spread across a room. Glare handling is another advantage compared with many older glossy OLED implementations.
Choose the G6 when film viewing is a priority, the room can be dimmed for at least part of the day, and you want fewer compromises in HDR highlights, color accuracy, and reflections. It is not automatically the best purchase for a bright open-plan room; in that situation, the BRAVIA 9 II’s sustained brightness may produce a clearer daytime image.
LG C6 OLED 2026: the upper mid-range movie option
RTINGS places the LG C6 OLED 2026 in its upper mid-range movie position. It keeps the fundamental OLED benefits: pixel-level blacks, wide viewing angles, and strong processing. That makes it a logical step down from the G6 when the goal is cinematic contrast without paying for the flagship’s full performance.

RTINGS describes the C6’s colors as less punchy and somewhat less accurate out of the box than the G6’s. HDR highlights are dimmer, and glare can be more distracting. Those differences are easiest to see in a bright room or in HDR scenes with intense sunlight, fire, or metallic reflections; they are less consequential when watching in a controlled, dark environment.

Sony BRAVIA 9 II Mini-LED: clearest choice for bright rooms
RTINGS recommends the Sony BRAVIA 9 II as its bright-room choice. Its high peak brightness and reflection handling are intended to preserve contrast and visible detail when daylight is unavoidable. The guide also credits it with an accurate image and strong upscaling, useful for mixed-quality sources.
The trade-off is that the BRAVIA 9 II is less suitable than the Samsung S95H in a completely dark room, according to RTINGS’ comparison, and it shows more motion blur behind fast-moving objects than the OLED alternative in that guide. Its Mini-LED backlight can also show blooming around small bright objects in dark scenes, an inherent limitation of zone-based dimming rather than a resolution problem.
Pick it when the television is in a bright living room, reflections are a daily nuisance, and daytime clarity matters more than OLED’s absolute black level. If you mostly watch films at night with lights off, an OLED is usually the more natural fit.
Sony Bravia 8 II: a QD-OLED alternative
What Hi-Fi?’s June 11, 2026 guide names the Sony Bravia 8 II its overall pick. The guide describes it as a 4K QD-OLED with Google TV, Dolby Vision, and two HDMI 2.1 sockets. Its strengths include deep blacks and strong shadow detail, making it attractive for movie enthusiasts who want OLED contrast with Sony’s processing approach.
The same guide lists rivals that get brighter and calls the limited number of HDMI 2.1 sockets a drawback. Two ports can be enough for one current-generation console and an eARC soundbar connection, but buyers with several high-bandwidth sources should map their connections before purchase.

What Hi-Fi? reports Sony’s claim that the Bravia 8 II is 25% brighter than the A95L and 50% brighter than the standard Bravia 8. Those percentages are a manufacturer comparison, not an independent laboratory measurement, and should not be treated as a universal brightness result for every picture mode or screen size.

A practical buying process
1. Set the maximum budget and screen size first
Start with the amount you can spend and the diagonal that fits the viewing distance, furniture, and wall. A larger screen can make detail easier to appreciate, but it also magnifies source flaws and may overwhelm a narrow room. TechRadar’s buying guidance recommends fixing budget and size before narrowing models.
2. Classify the room by its worst lighting
Consider the hours when you watch most often. A room that is dark at night but flooded with afternoon sun should be judged on both conditions. Note windows opposite the screen, overhead lamps, pale walls that bounce light, and whether blinds can be closed. Prioritize brightness and reflection control for unavoidable daylight; prioritize OLED contrast for controlled, dim viewing.
3. List your sources and motion needs
Write down every device: streaming box, disc player, game console, cable receiver, soundbar, and computer. Check the number of HDMI 2.1 inputs required for high-frame-rate gaming or advanced audio. If sports and action dominate, pay close attention to motion blur rather than choosing solely by black level.
4. Compare the exact candidate variants
Verify the full model suffix, screen size, tuner, stand configuration, and regional software. The cited recommendations span US-oriented RTINGS coverage and a UK-oriented What Hi-Fi? guide; availability and specifications are not interchangeable between markets.

Measure the wall, furniture width, viewing height, and distance from seats. For a wall mount, verify the television’s weight, VESA pattern, wall construction, and the mount’s load rating. A mount can improve viewing position and reduce reflections caused by a poor angle, but it does not improve the panel’s native picture quality.

Picture-quality pitfalls to avoid
Choosing by resolution alone
Nearly all serious candidates in this guide are 4K. That makes contrast, HDR behavior, processing, reflections, and motion more useful differentiators than another resolution label.
Assuming every OLED is equally bright
OLED is a panel family, not a performance guarantee. The G6, C6, and Bravia 8 II have different HDR and glare characteristics. Compare the specific model and size rather than generalizing from the technology name.
Ignoring blooming in Mini-LED demonstrations
Store lighting can hide halos, while a dark room can make them obvious. Test or inspect scenes with white subtitles, star fields, and small lights against black backgrounds if blooming concerns you.

Trusting a ranking as permanent
RTINGS recorded recommendation changes during 2026, including a September 15 refresh that added the LG B6 as a mid-range pick and the Hisense U6SF Pro as a budget pick. A ranking is tied to the review date, market, price, and available competitors. Recheck the current guide and inventory immediately before ordering.
Decision paths for common rooms
You watch films mostly at night
Begin with the LG G6 if its flagship price and size fit. Move to the LG C6 OLED 2026 when you can accept dimmer HDR highlights, less punchy out-of-box color, and more visible glare in exchange for a lower-tier OLED position. The Sony Bravia 8 II is another OLED route if its Google TV interface, Dolby Vision support, and two HDMI 2.1 ports match your setup.
Your sofa faces windows or strong lamps
Start with the Sony BRAVIA 9 II. Its brightness and reflection handling address the conditions that can make an OLED look muted during the day. Check seating angles and motion requirements as well, because RTINGS identifies more blur behind fast objects than on its OLED alternative.
You share the screen from wide seating
Favor the OLED recommendations’ wide-angle characteristics, then confirm the exact size and placement. A screen viewed too far off-axis can lose perceived contrast even when the panel itself is excellent.

Give processing and upscaling equal weight to panel technology. The LG G6, LG C6, and BRAVIA 9 II are all credited with strong upscaling in the cited guides, which can make a larger practical difference than small specification changes on a 4K source.
What to verify before purchase
- Exact model suffix and screen size for your country.
- Current stock and delivery date; rankings and inventory change during the year.
- Number and location of HDMI 2.1 inputs, including whether one is reserved for eARC.
- Support for the HDR formats your players and streaming services use.
- Screen reflections at your actual seating position, not only under store lighting.
- Stand width, wall-mount compatibility, VESA pattern, and wall construction.
- Return policy in case uniformity, blooming, glare, or motion artifacts are unacceptable in your room.
The clearest picture is the one that preserves detail under your lighting, sources, seating, and viewing habits. Use the LG G6 OLED as the dark-room movie benchmark, the LG C6 OLED 2026 as the value-oriented OLED alternative, the Sony BRAVIA 9 II for bright rooms, and the Sony Bravia 8 II as a separate QD-OLED option recognized by a UK guide. Confirm the exact regional model and current availability before committing.
