Clear Windows 11 Recent Search History: Local, Bing, and Account Steps

The fastest way to remove recent searches stored by Windows 11 itself is: open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions, then under History select Clear device search history. This clears the Windows Search list saved on that PC.

That control does not erase every place a search can be recorded. Bing activity, Microsoft-account history, a work or school account, Microsoft Edge browsing history, and other entries in the Microsoft Privacy dashboard use separate controls. Use the section that matches where your searches were made and where you want them removed.

What the Windows 11 button actually clears

Windows Search keeps a local history on the device so it can rank suggestions and help you find items faster. Microsoft describes this storage as search history saved locally on your device. The Clear device search history command removes that local Windows Search list; it is the right first step when recent terms appear in the Start search box or Windows Search panel.

Local clearing is narrower than an account-wide privacy cleanup. A term can also exist in Bing’s cloud history, in a personal Microsoft account, in a work or school account, or in the browsing history of the browser you used. Cloud files and services can supply additional results even after the local list is empty. Treat each location as a separate record with its own deletion control.

There is no purchase, utility, privacy screen, USB drive, or other product required for this task. Windows and Microsoft provide the relevant controls in Settings, Bing, Edge, and the Privacy dashboard. The important requirement is access to the device and, for online records, the correct account.

Before you start: identify the record you want to remove

Look at where the unwanted item appears. A term displayed under recent searches in the Start menu usually points to the local Windows Search list. A term visible on Bing’s Search History page belongs to Bing’s history for the current device session or account. A visited website listed in Edge is browser history, even if you reached it by searching Bing. Results for a OneDrive file, Outlook message, or SharePoint document may be cloud content rather than a saved recent-search term.

Also identify every identity in use. A Windows installation can receive results from a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account at the same time. Clearing one does not clear the other. If you use more than one Edge profile, each profile has its own browsing-history view and must be checked separately.

Clear recent Windows Search history on the device

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Privacy & security in the left navigation.
  4. Select Search permissions.
  5. Scroll to the History section.
  6. Select Clear device search history.

The command applies to the Windows 11 device on which you use it. It is designed for the recent-search list maintained by Windows Search, not for records held by online services. After selecting it, open Search again and check the recent-items area. If an old term still appears, it may be coming from an account, a browser profile, or a suggested result rather than the device list.

If you cannot find “Search permissions”

  • Use the Settings search field and search for Search permissions.
  • Confirm that you are in Privacy & security, not the separate Search settings page.
  • Install pending Windows updates if the Settings layout differs substantially from these labels; Microsoft can move controls between releases.
  • On a managed computer, an administrator policy may restrict some search and account controls.

The wording can vary slightly between Windows 11 releases, but the control is the device-history command under Search permissions. If the button is unavailable on a managed machine, an organization policy may be controlling search behavior; clearing a personal account will not override that policy.

Clear Bing searches connected to a Microsoft account

If you searched Bing while signed in, the search terms can be associated with that Microsoft account. Clearing the device list does not remove this cloud history. Use the Microsoft Privacy dashboard and open Browsing and search. In the Search history section, choose Clear all activities.

This action removes the selected search-history data from the Microsoft account and starts Microsoft’s deletion process. It does not retroactively affect searches made while you were signed out, because those searches were not stored under that account’s settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selecting the clear command, verify the account avatar or sign-in state. Clearing the wrong account can give the impression that nothing happened when the suggestions are actually being supplied by another identity. Personal and organization accounts are separate records even when they are used on the same PC.

Use Bing’s Search History page for the account type you have

  • Signed out: select an individual activity and choose Clear, or choose Clear all to remove the Bing history held for that device.
  • Personal Microsoft account: clear all activities under Search history in the Microsoft Privacy dashboard.
  • Work or school account: use Clear all on the Search History page while signed in to that organization’s account.

Check which account is active before clearing. Windows can combine results from a personal account and an organization account, so removing one account’s entries may leave suggestions supplied by the other. If you used Bing both signed in and signed out, handle the account history and the signed-out device history as separate tasks.

Stop Bing from recording new searches

Bing’s Search History controls include an option to turn search history off. Turning it off prevents new entries from being added, but it does not delete terms already stored. Clear the existing history separately, then disable history if you do not want future searches added.

This setting is account-specific. Changing it for a personal Microsoft account does not automatically change the setting for a work or school account, and it does not change local Windows Search storage or an Edge browsing profile. Turning the setting off is therefore a prevention step, not a substitute for deletion.

Clear Microsoft Edge browsing history separately

Search history and browser history are different records. Microsoft explicitly notes that clearing Bing search history does not clear the browser’s history. In Microsoft Edge, use this path:

  1. Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Under the clearing section, select Choose what to clear.
  5. Choose the required Time range.
  6. Select Browsing history.
  7. Select Clear now.

The action applies to the Edge profile currently in use. If several people or accounts use separate Edge profiles, repeat the check in each relevant profile. Clearing browsing history removes visited-page records from that profile; it is not a replacement for clearing Windows Search or Bing account activity.

Choose the time range deliberately. A narrow range removes only the period you select, while a broader range removes more of that profile’s browsing record. The Edge operation still does not delete files, messages, or account activity that merely appeared in a search result.

Use the Microsoft Privacy dashboard for broader cleanup

The Privacy dashboard can contain more than typed search terms. Depending on the account and services used, its activity categories can include Bing and Cortana searches, Microsoft Edge browsing, location, voice, media, and apps-and-services activity. Open each category that matters to you and use its own clear control.

A broad dashboard cleanup is useful when your concern is the Microsoft account rather than only the Start menu. It still does not guarantee that every local copy, browser record, or signed-out search has been removed. Think of the dashboard as the account side of the cleanup, while Windows Settings handles the local device side.

For example, clearing Search history does not automatically clear location or voice activity. Those categories have separate controls, so review them individually if your goal is a wider account-activity cleanup. Likewise, a dashboard action for one personal account does not clear activity held by an organization account.

Which cleanup route should you use?

Where the record is stored Control to use What it removes Does it stop future collection?
Windows 11 device Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions > Clear device search history Recent Windows Search terms stored locally on that PC No; it clears the current list only
Bing history for a signed-out device session Bing Search History, then Clear or Clear all Bing activity held for that device session Not stated by the control; use the available history setting if offered
Personal Microsoft account Privacy dashboard > Browsing and search > Search history > Clear all activities Search activity associated with that account Turn search history off separately to prevent new entries
Work or school Microsoft account Bing Search History page while signed in to the organization account Search activity associated with that work or school account Use the account’s available history setting separately
Microsoft Edge profile Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Choose what to clear Browsing history for the selected time range No; choose any separate browsing-data controls you need
Other Microsoft activity Microsoft Privacy dashboard categories Selected browsing, location, voice, media, or apps-and-services activity Each category has its own controls

Why recent searches can still appear after you clear them

The term came from a different storage location

Clearing the local Windows list does not clear Bing’s account history, and clearing Bing does not clear Edge browsing history. Follow all relevant paths if you want a coordinated cleanup: local Windows Search, the correct Microsoft account, Edge profiles, and any dashboard category that contains related activity.

Windows is showing cloud content, not a saved local term

Windows Search can combine local results with content from a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account. Cloud search can surface files and messages from services such as OneDrive, Outlook, and SharePoint. A result that looks like a recent search may actually be a cloud suggestion or a matching file name. Clear the associated account history and review cloud-search permissions when the result is tied to an online service.

You cleared one account but another account is active

Check the profile or account shown in the Microsoft service you are using. A personal and an organization account can both contribute results on the same Windows installation. Clear each account separately when both are used.

The interface has not refreshed

Close and reopen the Start menu or Search panel after clearing. If the item remains, sign out and back in to the relevant Microsoft account, then check the local and online controls again. Avoid assuming that a visible suggestion proves deletion failed; it may be a current result generated from a file, service, or account rather than a stored recent term.

A backup copy still exists

Microsoft says that some copies of cleared search history may remain in backup systems for a limited time. Clearing the Privacy dashboard removes the data from the dashboard and begins removal from Microsoft systems, but it should not be described as an instantaneous wipe of every backup copy.

What clearing history does not do

  • It does not delete files, emails, OneDrive documents, or SharePoint content that happened to appear in search results.
  • It does not erase Edge browsing history unless you use Edge’s separate clearing path.
  • It does not remove searches made while signed out from a Microsoft-account history page.
  • It does not automatically clear a second personal or work account.
  • It does not delete every category in the Microsoft Privacy dashboard.
  • It does not prevent future Bing entries unless you separately turn search history off.
  • It does not guarantee immediate removal of every backup copy held by Microsoft.

Common situations and the correct sequence

You only want the Start menu’s recent terms gone

Use the local Windows path and stop there: Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions > Clear device search history. There is no need to clear Edge or account data unless you also want those records removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are preparing a shared or borrowed PC

Clear the device history, then check every Microsoft account used on the computer and each Edge profile. If Bing was used while signed out, clear the signed-out device history as well. Review the dashboard categories for the account you used, because a local Windows clear alone does not address online activity.

You searched at work and at home on the same installation

Handle the personal Microsoft account and work or school account independently. Use the Privacy dashboard for the personal account and Bing’s Search History page for the organization account. Then clear the local list and any Edge profiles that contain the visited pages.

You want old data removed and new data stopped

First clear existing local, Bing, and browser records. Next turn Bing search history off for each applicable account. The two actions have different purposes: clearing removes what is already present, while turning history off prevents new Bing entries.

A complete Windows 11 privacy cleanup checklist

  1. Clear the local list at Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions.
  2. Open Bing Search History and identify whether you are signed in, signed out, or using an organization account.
  3. Clear the relevant Bing or Microsoft-account history.
  4. Turn off Bing search history if you want to prevent new account entries.
  5. In every Edge profile that matters, choose the time range and clear Browsing history.
  6. Review the Microsoft Privacy dashboard for browsing, location, voice, media, and apps-and-services activity.
  7. Check whether Windows Search is displaying cloud content from OneDrive, Outlook, SharePoint, or another connected service.
  8. Reopen Search and verify the result after the controls have had time to refresh.

Retention and deletion timing

Microsoft’s policy documentation says that authenticated-user data can be retained for up to five years for product improvement after safeguards are applied, and that personalized-search identifiers are no longer used after 18 months. These are Microsoft policy statements, not a guarantee that every individual search remains visible for those periods. They describe possible retention and processing limits after account activity is cleared.

For practical purposes, distinguish three outcomes: removal from the visible Windows or Bing list, removal from the account’s dashboard, and completion of deletion across Microsoft systems and backups. The first two can be initiated with the controls above; the last can take additional time. Microsoft also states that some copies may remain in backup systems for a limited time, so a delayed disappearance from every backend should not be treated as a failed button press.

Recommended order when you want the broadest result

Start with the local Windows control so the device’s recent list is removed. Next clear Bing history for every account involved, then turn account search history off if you do not want new entries. Clear Edge browsing history in each applicable profile. Finish by reviewing the Privacy dashboard’s other categories. This order separates local, account, browser, and broader activity records without relying on one control to erase data it does not manage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clear recent searches on Windows 11?

Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions. Under History, select Clear device search history. This removes the recent Windows Search list stored on that PC.

Where is Clear device search history?

It is under Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions, in the History section. It is separate from the general Search settings page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do recent searches still show after I cleared them?

The item may come from Bing account history, a work or school account, an Edge profile, or cloud content from OneDrive, Outlook, or SharePoint. Check each relevant storage location and account, then close and reopen Search.

How do I clear Bing history tied to my Microsoft account?

Open the Microsoft Privacy dashboard, choose Browsing and search, and use Clear all activities in Search history. Signed-out searches are not affected by that account action.

Does clearing Windows Search history delete Edge history?

No. Edge browsing history has its own control: Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Choose what to clear. Select a time range, Browsing history, and Clear now.

Does turning Bing search history off delete old searches?

No. Turning it off prevents new entries. Clear existing history separately from Bing Search History or the Microsoft Privacy dashboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to clear a work or school account separately?

Yes. A work or school account is separate from a personal Microsoft account. While signed in to the organization account, use Clear all on its Bing Search History page.

Are deleted searches removed instantly from every Microsoft system?

Not necessarily. Microsoft says some copies may remain in backup systems for a limited time. Clearing the dashboard starts the removal process, but it is not an instantaneous wipe of every backup copy.

The Bottom Line

For the Start menu’s local recent searches, use Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions > Clear device search history. For a broader cleanup, separately clear Bing history for each personal, work, school, or signed-out context, clear Edge browsing history in each relevant profile, and review the Microsoft Privacy dashboard. Clearing one location does not erase the others, and Microsoft may retain backup copies for a limited time.
