CleanSpark and BitFuFu’s Bitcoin Output Fell in September 2026 as Canaan Held Steady

September 2026 produced a split result among three public bitcoin miners: CleanSpark and BitFuFu mined less than they did in August, while Canaan’s output was unchanged. The declines reflected different issues—CleanSpark is shifting attention toward data-center expansion, and BitFuFu’s lower cloud-mining contribution outweighed stronger self-mining. Canaan ended a three-month run of sequential production declines.

September production at a glance

The figures reported on October 15, 2026, show CleanSpark remaining the largest producer of the three by monthly bitcoin output. BitFuFu’s headline decline was smaller, but its production mix changed substantially. Canaan was the only company to avoid a month-over-month decrease.

Company September 2026 August 2026 Month-over-month change Month-end holdings
CleanSpark 529 BTC 593 BTC Down 64 BTC, nearly 11% 13,530 BTC, down from 13,703
BitFuFu 167 BTC 174 BTC Down 7 BTC, about 4% 1,388 BTC, up from 1,373
Canaan 44 BTC 44 BTC Flat 1,875 BTC, up from 1,868

The companies are not directly comparable on production alone. BitFuFu includes self-mining and cloud-mining output, while Canaan’s release also provides installed hashrate and an average all-in power-cost figure. CleanSpark’s update included bitcoin sales and a change from monthly to quarterly operational reporting.

CleanSpark: lower output and a move to quarterly updates

Production and treasury

CleanSpark mined 529 BTC in September, compared with 593 BTC in August—a decline of 64 BTC, or nearly 11%. Its bitcoin holdings fell to 13,530 BTC at month-end from 13,703 BTC in August.

The company disclosed two types of sales during the month. It sold 2 BTC on spot markets and delivered 700 BTC through call-option exercises at an average sale price of $72,928 per bitcoin. Those transactions help explain why month-end holdings declined even as the company continued mining.

Why the reporting schedule is changing

CleanSpark said it will stop issuing monthly mining updates and report operational data quarterly instead. The change coincides with a greater emphasis on data-center expansion, so monthly bitcoin production will no longer be available from the company on the same schedule.

The Block reported that CleanSpark is funding construction of its Sandersville, Georgia, data-center campus with a $2.276 billion senior secured note offering. The company expects the campus to generate roughly $6.6 billion in revenue. Those are company projections, not realized revenue or an independently verified return.

BitFuFu: the production mix explains the decline

Self-mining improved while cloud mining contracted

BitFuFu produced 167 BTC in September, down from 174 BTC in August, a decrease of about 4%. Looking only at the total obscures the underlying change:

BitFuFu activity September August Change
Self-mining 98 BTC 88 BTC Up 10 BTC
Cloud mining 69 BTC 86 BTC Down 17 BTC
Total 167 BTC 174 BTC Down 7 BTC

Self-mining therefore increased, but the 17-BTC reduction in cloud-mining output was larger than that gain. BitFuFu’s holdings nevertheless rose to 1,388 BTC from 1,373 BTC.

Execution risk at the proposed Ethiopia site

BitFuFu also disclosed obstacles to its planned acquisition of an 80-megawatt mining site in Ethiopia. The dispute involves the site operator and local electricity suppliers. The company said it was considering canceling the transaction and seeking recovery of its investment.

According to The Block’s October 15 report, BitFuFu had already invested $4.1 million and deployed approximately 13,700 Bitmain Antminer S19 rigs at the project. A cancellation could therefore affect both capital recovery and the timing of the planned capacity increase. The disclosure describes a potential outcome, not a completed cancellation or confirmed recovery.

Canaan: flat bitcoin production with energy-reuse projects

Output, holdings and operating metrics

Canaan mined 44 BTC in September, exactly matching August. The result ended a three-month sequence of month-over-month declines. Its treasury increased to 1,875 BTC at the end of September from 1,868 BTC one month earlier.

Canaan’s official September release listed 10.00 EH/s of non-joint-venture installed hashrate and 4.87 EH/s of joint-venture installed hashrate. It reported an average all-in power cost of US$0.043 per kilowatt-hour. These are reported operating metrics for the company’s disclosed fleet, not a standardized cost comparison across all three miners.

  • Canaan has launched the Avalon Nano 3S ASIC miner designed for residential spaces, featuring the SHA-256 algorithm for direct Bitcoin mining.
  • The Nano 3S boasts an eye-catching design with an information display screen and simple setup, making it suitable for beginners or as a gift.
  • Despite its small size and quiet operation, its hash rate of 6Th/s and power consumption of 140W result in a relatively low energy efficiency.

Heat recovery in the Nordic project

Canaan said its 8-megawatt Nordic district-heating project was fully operational and was supplying recovered computing heat to approximately 2,800 homes. The project illustrates the company’s strategy of treating mining heat as a usable energy product rather than simply a waste stream.

A separate Canadian greenhouse heat-recovery project was moving toward deployment but still awaited site inspections. It should therefore be treated as an in-progress project, not operating capacity.

Which miner performed best in September?

The answer depends on the measure. CleanSpark produced the most bitcoin by a wide margin at 529 BTC, but it also recorded the steepest percentage decline and reduced its holdings after sales and option exercises. BitFuFu’s total output fell less sharply than CleanSpark’s, and its self-mining business improved, but cloud-mining output dropped and its Ethiopia expansion faces a significant execution dispute.

Canaan produced far less bitcoin in absolute terms at 44 BTC, yet it was the most stable month over month: output was flat, treasury holdings increased, and the company reported specific power-cost and hashrate figures. Its operating Nordic heat-reuse project also distinguishes its infrastructure strategy.

What to watch next

  • CleanSpark: quarterly disclosures will replace the monthly production updates, making it harder to track short-term output while the Sandersville data-center buildout advances.
  • BitFuFu: investors will need an update on whether the Ethiopia acquisition is canceled, whether the $4.1 million investment is recovered, and how the company replaces the disputed 80 MW of planned capacity.
  • Canaan: future reports can show whether the Nordic heat-reuse operation remains fully utilized and whether the Canadian greenhouse project clears its site inspections.

Bottom line

September’s results were not a uniform industry slowdown. CleanSpark’s production fell as it sold bitcoin and redirected corporate attention toward large-scale data centers. BitFuFu’s decline came from a weaker cloud-mining contribution despite higher self-mining. Canaan held production steady and paired that stability with rising treasury holdings, disclosed power economics and an operating heat-recovery project.
